As previously reported, customers purchasing the Ferrari California will get a choice between two different transmissions.  The company will offer a six-speed manual transmission in addition to the standard seven-speed dual wet clutch semi-automatic, according to an alleged leaked document.

Choosing the manual will lead to a reduced performance, but it may satisfy a 10% demand by customers for a stick shift.  With the six-speed manual, the car sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, at least 0.3 seconds slower than the DCT provides.  Additionally, fuel consumption is increased with the manual gear box.  The DCT provides a 17.9 mpg-US (13.1 liters/100km) rating, 11% better than the manual provides.

Either transmission gets the car to a top speed of 193 mph (311 km/h).

The manual gearbox is rear-mounted, to keep a 47/53 weight ratio.  It involves "double-cone synchros with multiple pawl asymmetric geometry, an oil bath lever and fork system," according to the leaked document.

Autopareri.com says the manual transmission will be availble in the coming months on the Ferrari California.

About time, they should be offering this with almost every car. A convertible with a manual is the way to go. I know the DCT is quicker but it removes the fun factor and the difference in the two would make me choose the 6-speed. The only downside to a manual from my experiences, I can't talk on the phone. But the CA laws don't allow me to do so anyway.

One would think that a Ferrari owner would have plenty of financial resources to buy even the most expensive Bluetooth hands-free device in the world, instead of using half his limbs and half his head just to hold the phone. But who am I to judge people's suicidal tendencies to show off their shiny mobile phones while driving?

I prefer the coupe with the manual, in nice weather like SoCal a convert. is sometimes pretty nice!

0.3 seconds is a lot. But, I think this is a much more puristic version for any real enthusiast unless they're going to the track competitively (key word competitively).

A Ferrari, Porsche or a Lamborghini has to be a manual. You want the driver to feel connected to the machine in natural harmony, rewarding too. Manual supercars are easy to drive these days but I am not sure if it is easy if more than 600bhp. The Murcielago, Carrera GT, any 911 GT3 and the Ferrari 550 Maranello has one of the sweetest manual gearbox on the market. More importantly, it will put your children, wife or just about anyone from driving your precious supercar.

i think 10% is an overestimation for this particular ferrari. those who buy this california are not your hard core gear heads. and if they do, the dual clutch tranny is quite well matched for this car. by offering this, they just dont want to alienate those 'traditionalists'.

I bet this will ruin the California just like the E60 M5 6spd as these cars were designed with semi-auto boxes at the first place.

the M5 6 speed isn't as good due to its traction control thing which you can't switch off and the gearbox is from the old M5 E39
