No AWD for Subaru’s FT-86 Variant

Subaru has always prided itself on supplying all its vehicles with its patented AWD system. A report now says this may not happen with the brand's upcoming halo car, codenamed the 216A. The two-door coupe shares its underpinnings with the Toyota FT-86, another concept sports car under development.

According to said report, costs of installing an AWD system in the 216A have spiraled out of control, prompting a review of the entire powertrain. A more likely scenario now is that it will simply become a clone of the FT-86 under the skin. The skin itself would include a new design for the area in front of the A pillar and a new front end.

Should Toyota issue a performance FT-86 G Sports model then a 216A STI is also possible. However, that might take Subaru back to square one since STI models typically feature AWD. The G Sports and STI versions are expected to cost ¥3.5 million (US$38,600) and ¥3 million (US$33,100) each respectively.

I can understand Subaru's reluctance to dive into the non-AWD pool, but I think it will be fine for this model. Boxer engine layouts are also a defining Subaru characteristic. My understanding is that this car will have one. If it is a Boxer, has great handling and doesn't look like a slightly warmed-over Toyota, it will be a desirable Subaru.

"Boxer engine layouts are also a defining Subaru characteristic." Yes, but the Toyota FT-86 also has it, so this becomes irrelevant. The changed exterior design will have to do the job.

I realize that the Toyota model has a Subaru engine. It seems like the onus is then on Toyota to differentiate itself from Subaru.

Lots of Subaru cars in Japan are FWD.

would seem a bit strange for the halo model to not have AWD considering it is meant to represent what the brand is about and what the "lesser" vehicles are aspiring to. Didn't Subaru switch AWD as a point of difference because FWD Subaru's weren't really different enough to sell in any volume? Makes you wonder who's really driving this project (I

A differentiation point that they can easily market out of by claiming Lotus values for a niche model such as this.

Wow, a $5,500 premium for the G-Sport over the STi!!! Considering this, I'm sure the people who are buying these cars would pay a premium for an AWD STi variant. I'm sure the development for the AWD wouldn't take the price of the STi over the G-Sport.

Calm down mate, it is for Japan price. If you live in USA, maybe it will cost around 20k as we know that pricing in USA is considered always to be much cheaper than any other countries. Bring it on to OZ for less than 50k and it will compete with MX-5.

Wow, I'm not complaining. Sounds like a bunch of fun to me. As far as price, I think it's pretty accurate. Current STI goes for about 30 in the US, I'd expect this to right there if not a bit more.

Sorry mate, has to be 40-45k to capture Golf GTI, WRX and Lancer Ralliart crowd. No self respecting enthusiast buys a MX-5 new. The only people who do are buying them for their 17 yr old daughters.

This looks better than that Lexus Supercar...if it were around 20-30 USD then it should sell pretty well considering the tunability of the Subaru engine...add in another 5k worth of tuning and it could very well be a performance bargin in a pretty slick package

Guys from Subaru .. you are crazy ?! No way you can make this model without the AWD ... ok, so it will be FWD for the entry versions, but at least the expensive ones make them AWD.

No, it will be RWD, not FWD, FWD is lame and boring.

FWD is also mechanically more complicated.

Razz: Don't be stupid. The platform has been developed for RWD. Adding AWD to the platform is the cost inhibitive factor. Otakki: It may be more complicated, but that doesn't make it "better". FWD is quicker and cheaper to assemble on a line, and marginally easier to engineer for a wider variety of applications/markets/niches. Hence the majority of passenger cars on the market today utilise FWD centric platform.

AWD is good for rally and exit speed but has higher associated drive loss. RWD is most efficient as you have the rear wheels powering the car and the front wheels turning and braking. FWD, I always call, F***ing Wrong Drive. Although could be made fast its fundamentals limit its performance.

RWD would be better compromise without famed AWD. Think BMW and you get the picture. Go on Scooby!
