If I had these two VWs my happiness would know no bounds:

One would have to have a slightly modded original engine whilst the other would be powered by a mid-mounted solid lifter Chevy 327.
I think my love for the old busses stems from the fact that I was likely conceived in one.

Think I prefer this:

My parents still have an old Syncro, that thing is still a laugh to drive, its like a mini-truck. I remember the first day my dad got it, he took it on a moto-cross track - lost a registration plate and part of the front bumper in the process. The following weekend, in the same forest, we accidentally ended up doing a rally stage in it. Good memories :)

The original says "fun and adventure", the new one says "boring".
Unfortunately the original also says "In the summer, while I'm struggling to get up the pass, I'll cook you like a crappie left in a parked car, and in the winter you will be frozen as solid as a grocery store turkey by the time we hit the top".

cant we have something to commemorate this great anniversary... a special edition with old school paint job at the very least... preferably a new retro model.

Careful now. Lately the words "special edition" have inspired hate mail by the truck load.

I don't think "special edition" illicits a negative response until they pop-up nearly monthly for the same car.

I'm sure if there were a huge market for a premium van then VW would've done a more thorough retro version of it.
But most families are driven around in SUV's.
Vans are nice but they need to do double duty as fleet vehicle for the trade sector in some variant or another as well (for most markets...with the US being an exception where the mini-vans are pretty much family haulers.)
For VW to invest in a cute retro people carrier van the market size just does't justify it...unless they can convert enough buyers away from SUV's and SAV's.
