Vettel takes pole in Bahrain, says it is big surprise

Sebastian Vettel on Saturday said it was a "big surprise" to head qualifying for the Bahrain grand prix.

The German's Red Bull was in front of the two Ferraris in the decisive and newly low-fuel 'Q3' session, with the returning Felipe Massa four tenths quicker than his new teammate Fernando Alonso.

The first McLaren was Lewis Hamilton in fourth, a few tenths quicker than reigning world champion Jenson Button but a worrying 1.1 seconds from Vettel's pole.

"I was surprised with that result. We don't have the same pace as Red Bull and Ferrari. It's downforce -- we are weak in the middle section where we lose about a second," Hamilton told the BBC.

Fifth place completed Nico Rosberg's clean-sweep of being quicker than Michael Schumacher so far this weekend, with the 41-year-old returning to F1 after three years with seventh on the grid for Mercedes, behind Webber.

Further back, F1's three new teams dominated the stragglers in the 'Q1' session, with Timo Glock winning the battle to be the best of the newcomers for Virgin.

A handful of seconds behind that came the hapless HRT outfit, with Karun Chandhok bringing up the rear after finally getting at the wheel of a functioning single seater.

"We just wanted to check if all the gears went up and down. There are so many things we can improve, I'm not even comfortable in the seat," said the Indian rookie.

"These are all things we should have done two months ago."

His quicker teammate Bruno Senna said just getting his virginal car through all the practice sessions is a "big victory".

"With more practice we will get better and I am sure we will be a lot closer to the other new teams," said the nephew of the great Ayrton Senna.

seb is brilliant. why have i been completely unable to find any explanation for the fact that massa was the only top 10 driver to improve his time from q2-q3? everyone was slower - most around 4 tenths - seb was 3 tenths slower, i didnt have the live video feed available and watched the formula1 com text feed, which stated all drivers were on the softer tyre... so why were they slower? were they indeed on the faster tyre or was the commentary wrong? certainly lap times suggested a different tyre selection for all between q2-q3.

I REALLY HATE THAT YOU GUYS POST PHOTOS AND NAMES OF QUALIFYING/RACE WINNERS ON THE FRONT PAGE! For those of us that often browse the internet (including this page) before watching the race having you spoil the outcome is really messed up. Why can't you just post a story with the F1 logo and title it "Bahrain qualifying results" so you aren't ruining the outcome for people. Have a little respect.

Go stay in your cave so no information distorts your day. Note to WCF - I appreciate the news and will still watch as a loyal F1 fan.

+1 to Jerry. This site is for reporting car news aswell as F1 stories. How about you avoid this site until the race is over? Try using your brain...

Guys, calm down. WCF could have a spoiler alert on the main page as have done in the past and still have the news inside. But I suppose this should only be done for the race results :)

We used to post "spoiler safe" titles, but we got a lot of complaints on that as well. One of the prevailing reasons was, "Do you see any other motorsports or F1 sites making "overly considerate" titles in their results stories? The best way to settle this would be to conduct a vote. I will create a separate story with a poll in the near future.

Karun Chandhok's lap times would be greatly improved if his unibrow wasn't presenting itself as such as an aerodynamic hindrance to the acceleration of his vehicle. I mean, just look at it for God's sake: http://www.gpeuropa.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/karun-chandhok-ind-isport-international.jpg

Or they painted the car in a Taxicab livery. That could increase his speed and overpass/cut off ability.
