The first pictures of the 2012 Chevy Camaro testing with its top down surfaced on blog forum Camaro5.com. The Camaro convertible was spotted by a sharp-eyed fan while it was being tested in Madison Heights, Michigan, about 13 miles north of GM Headquarters in Detroit.

We had not seen photos of the open top since June 2008, when GM released a teaser of the vehicle. A year ago, GM announced the car would be delayed, but later suggested that development was back on. In October, former GM CEO Fritz Henderson suggested that the car could be released next year as a 2012 model year vehicle.

The former executive's stance was allegedly confirmed by the car's test driver, who told the Camaro5 photographer that the car will be on the market by April 2011.

Why is the droptop coming out so much later? Surely a roof chop and some chassis strengthening doesn't take a year?

It's not that simple, there's also aerodynamic adjustment, sound insulation adjustment, suspension adjustment and more. and a year goes by much faster than you think

The last i saw of that model it was a green with writing on the car side being taken away for scrap on a back of a truck. Anyone remember that Glad it is coming out now and i would think a convertible has more work to it after the coupe was made in the way of body roll and head rests safety pop up
