Audi R8 Lineup to Grow with Entry Level and Sportier LMS Inspired Models

A little birdie apparently sang his feathers off to Car and Driver with regards to the Audi R8 family. The first R8 was the 4.2-litre V8-powered coupe model which was lauded the world over. It was then followed by the mighty R8 V10 with its 386 kW (518 bhp/ 525 PS) 5.2-litre V10 engine. The latest in the lineup is the same R8 V10 but without its top on. It is called the R8 V10 Spyder.

However, Audi is not stopping there, according to the little birdie's lyrics. A 4.2 Spyder is said to be in the works and will be revealed later this year. It will be at US dealers some time in early 2011 and cost about US$135,000 (about €99,000). Power should remain the same at 309 kW (414 bhp/ 420 PS).

A hardcore version inspired by the R8 LMS will feature carbon fibre parts and possibly more power. Something to the tune of 420 kW (563 bhp/ 571 PS) is attainable from this engine, just look at the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera for proof. Other changes would include the discontinuation of the R Tronic transmission in favour of a 7-speed double clutch system.

To keep emissions police at bay Audi is not installing the 1,000Nm (737 lb-ft) V12 TDI motor currently found in the Q7, but will instead opt for electric power. So the e-tron is a go and will be sold at around US$200,000 (€146,700) a unit.
