Another Toyota Prius acceleration incident in New York

Prius suddenly shot out of a driveway and crashed into a stone wall across the street

Another incident has been reported of an unintended acceleration of a Toyota Prius and United States authorities are investigating.

Federal regulators are looking into an accident that occurred on Tuesday in Harrison, New York, when a 56-year old woman in a 2005 Toyota Prius was pulling out of a driveway when the car suddenly shot across the street and crashed into a stone wall. The driver sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The crash was reported to be very violent, according to local police. With some of the boulders on the stone wall, weighing between 500 and 1000 pounds (225 to 450 kg), thrown several feet after impact. Police say the floor mat was not the problem and that the car had already been taken into a local Toyota dealer due to the recall that is in effect.

Last November, Toyota recalled all 2004-2009 Prius models to fix a problem where accelerators can get stuck due to faulty floor mats. In January, Toyota issued another recall for several models, which did not include the Prius, to fix gas pedals that can get stuck due to faulty parts.

This was the second such Prius incident this week. On Monday, a man in his 2008 Toyota Prius accelerated out of control and sped to over 90 mph (145km/h) along a California freeway.

Federal regulators in the United States have been scrutinizing Toyota over persistent reports of stuck accelerators. Last month, Toyota Motor Corp. president Akio Toyoda testified before a US congressional committee and apologized for the company's recall problems.

God damn, are those people to dumb to put the tranny into neutral? And if I am honest the incident mentioned above sounds to me as a classic pedal mix-up. Seen such things very often.

it's not people are too dumb or something...now it's the ripple effects. either media craze whenever car accident involved Toyota vehicle, or the drivers state it's the problem of the vehicle even thou it's their mistake, or people looking for possible lawsuit to get benefit. don't be surprise when cops pull over a speeding Toyota, the driver claims it's the car speeding itsself! or when accident happened, the driver of Toyota claims their car wouldn't stop! believe me, Toyota will never found the root of problem, because they're all drivers' claim but when they examine the vehicle, there is nothing wrong... so sada for the whole situation & conspiracy...

that's so funny! you get pulled over, or run over somebody then just say "it wasn't me! i didn't do anything wrong! it was my toyota!" that's so BS!

well, trust me, you'll see more "claims" like this! it's the ripple effects... & people looking for possible benefit to file law suit against Toyota. & don't be surprise there is nothing wrong after whoever examine the vehicle, but the drivers keep claiming it's the vehicle problem. Toyota will never find the root of problem, because it's not technical, it's not mechanical, it's not electronical, it's human lie.

Isn't it a little strange that it only happens to Toyotas in the US?! Toyotas in the rest of the world seem to be doing just fine. Something is fishy there.

@ otakki: i've said that since the 1st wave of this "Toyota circus", it's all conspiracy to bring Toyota down. how strange is it? it's ONLY happened on Toyota in the USA?! it's all of sudden Toyota vehicles having problems?! let me tell you, if i can tell Mr. Toyoda, one thing he can do is: announce to shut down all manufaacturing facilities in the U.S., lay-off all factory employees, stop purchase from U.S. suppliers. yep, it'll be painful, but don't worry, Toyota doing well in Europe & Asia, & China is the next biggest market anyway, let's start over there!

You've watched too many conspiracy theory themed movies. The fact is people are dead because of criminal negligence on behalf of Toyota management. You can huff and puff all you like, but those are the cold facts, unbiased by your rather paranoid accusations. I think you should be careful what you write here... someone is always watching...

how ignorant are some people. The woman took her car in for her recall, so in her mind she was good to go. I can assume she was in the reverse position (right hand around passengers headrest, torso turned around and head looking out the rear window) when her pedal snapped and stuck to the floor. Being we dont know the length or slope of the driveway, car speed, etc.. its hard to say what happened for sure and wether she even had time to react or not. That's why investigators were summoned. As it stands, toyotas are documented to be unsafe. Not one comment that can find the toyota at fault? The Prius was recalled for an issue where the car loses braking when transitioning between electric and gas mode. Possible scenario: shes reversing in electric mode, gives a little gas, and the pedal sticks to the floor, she brakes, that's when the Prius loses its brakes momentarily. Full acceleration from both motors is when the car is at max torque and hp. No brakes. Is it hard to see that it was a violent accident? She hit that stone wall pretty hard while the car floored itself throwing 1000lb. boulders several feet. I dont think she was trying to get a lawsuit. She probably came close to a heart attack. she could've died.

OR she just steps on the gas pedel accidentally and thought it was the brake pedal just like many other women drivers. and the car happen to be Prius~ good for her!!

that would be the case! now that whenever accident or speeding involve Toyota vehicle, the driver will claim "it's the car, not me"...so stupid...the whole show is so freakinf annoying now.

Save the planet... kill the driver! :) These cars were supposed to be environmentally friendly, not to potentially kill the driver. Ho hum, back to the drawing board!

Without the facts everyone has an opinion. That's cool. But to say she was a stupid driver, or assume she was a dumb old lady who stepped on the wrong pedal is absurd. I hope none of you guys are called for jury duty any time soon. No facts about this particualr incident have been released other than what the accident scene looked like. I can see some of you personally work for Toyota, so you resort to bashing Americans instead of the crappy Toyotas. What about the American lawyer who used to work for Toyota, who stole thousands of documents over the years showing Toyota clearly knew about this problem, and chose to ignore it. It's all over CNN, watch the news once in a while, and you'll see for yourself. Sorry Im a proud American, and I refuse to believe that we need to recall millions of American people's brains because they cant shift into neutral, or hit the wrong pedal, as opposed to recalling foreign cars with parts made in China with no quality control. Notice how many items made in China usually end up broken or falling apart within a year or two. How many of you have been injured or know someone that has been injured on those chinese scooters and ATV's. Toyota sucks now. They lost focus on build quality and made a move to mass production at the lowest possible price. How else can you explain their 4x4 offroad vehicles frames rotting out within 5years. Cheap parts, no quality control. Or gas pedal assemblies made out of popsicle sticks. Regardless of what anyone says, Mr. Akido Toyoda is a billionaire, and he doesnt give a shit if the car is made out of clay and mud. He doesnt care if it has brakes or airbags that work. He just wants his money, the hell with who dies in the process. Considering he graduated from MIT, and spend a majority of his college years here in the USA, I have no sympathy for that bastard. He used us to get an education and a degree, then turns around and shits on us. That's some terrorist shit, and he should die in a fiery crash just like the many people that suffered in his bullshit vehicles. I bet he wont dare put his family behind the wheel of a Toyota. Bastard probably drives or gets chauffered around in a safe American car. Maybe a lincoln towncar or cadillac limousine or something. I dont think he'd ever get caught dead in a toyota.

Hey slim, I must apologies saying that all women are stupid drivers. i just seen so many stupid accidents around me caused by female drivers around me and had that kind of stupid stereotype. One time, I was walking to my girl friend?s brand new ride when she was backing up to her parking space, and there was more space at the back so I told her to back up bit more and she actually almost floored gas pedal instead of brake and car smashed into huge trash container box. That scared hell out of me as I was only a footstep away from the car and my girl friend was laughing because of shock and she said she thought it was the brake pedal. Miraculously, only the bumper was damaged and little dent on the rear hatch. Anyway, back to the point, I really respect what you have said but I have to tell you that I disagree with you. And I also have to say that I am a proud American too just like you! Yes, we are surrounded by all kinds of junk products from China and it drives me mad all the time. But what is that have to do with Toyota?? I?m sorry but Toyota is a Japanese company. And I don?t know if you ever owned a Japanese product but I have and I can tell you that they are the best quality products in the world! And you know what? These Toyotas are actually made in USA with most of the parts from Japan and USA not China. You say Toyota cars are ?cheap parts, no quality control?, ask anyone in the Earth and they will say cheap parts no quality control equals to ?American cars?. Just look how American Big 3 are suffering after 100 years of history and how Toyota became #1 in the world after 50 years of history. Toyota became world?s #1 because of their reliability and long lasting built quality with no break ups. That?s what Toyota is known for! How could they become so big and so rich if they made junk cars that no one would buy?? On the other hand, GM and Chrysler made all the junk cars and have gone bankrupt almost before the US gov. injected them billions of our tax money to produce more junks. And please explain to me that how come only the Toyota from US is making all kinds of trouble when Toyotas in rest of the world is not gone mad?? And why all US media is covered with all kinds of accident that involving car happen to be Toyota? That?s what really makes me frustrating when everyone that I know is pretty happy with their Toyota.
