Someone had forgotten how to be on a specific team rather than act as an "advisor".

I'm not so sure what to read into this. Schumacher saying "maybe" they were running more fuel suggests to me he's playing a bit of cat and mouse with the opposition. You know, plunder in the west, attack in the east and all of that.
Even if the Merc isn't competitive from that start, it'll take a very brave man to bet against a team comprising Schumacher and Brawn to not catch up very, very quickly.
