Hummer sale to Chinese collapses, liquidation begins

Yet another part of GM's fire sale to get rid of non-core brands has collapsed.  A deal by GM to sell Hummer to China-based Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery has been cancelled after months of negotiations.

As a result, the Hummer brand will be wound down completely.  Its remaining stock of under 2,500 units will be sold off, with warranties guaranteed by GM, and as many as 3,650 jobs in Indiana, Louisiana, and Michigan will likely be eliminated.

The two sides have been working in earnest since last summer, when GM announced they had a buyer for Hummer one day after their 2009 bankruptcy filing.  Few details of the agreement have leaked out since, but it is believed the marque was sold for $150 million.

However, the Chinese company needed regulatory approval from China's national government, who declined the transaction in an ongoing effort to encourage smaller fuel efficient vehicles.  "Tengzhong is disappointed that the transaction cannot be further pursued, but the company respects the outcome," the company said in a statement.  "Tengzhong worked earnestly to achieve an acquisition that it believed to be a tremendous opportunity to acquire a global brand at an attractive price."

General Motors has failed in its attempt to sell Saturn and Opel/Vauxhall.  The deal to sell Swedish brand Saab to Dutch supercar maker Spyker closed yesterday after months of turmoil.

"We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said GM Vice President John Smith.  "GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."

what a waiste! GM is kissing off an opportunity to showcase what a 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder turbo-charged engine can do in a 2-ton behemoth.

Don't worry, we're still gonna see a Chinese built Hummer. Mind you it won't be the genuine article, more of a knock-off really...with a rickshaw engine under the hood.

hey now , EDavis...snap back to reality . China does not need to produce fake US products as most,if not ALL of American manufacturing facilities are LEGITIMATELY established in China including its renown Apple computer products which are built NOT in SiliconValley but by cheaply-paid Chinese labour by exploitative Americans out to make quick megabucks from an Asian country they think less of as a matter of course. why , even China has in its coffers a substantial volume of US Treasury Bills to boot. my standpoint is that GM must have conducted a singularly beneficial contract to favor itself alone which is why the negotiated sale came to a halt. and by the way , the Hummer , specifically the H1, is the standard by which all SUVs are to be judged , save from its poorly-engineered powerplant .after all...what SUV is designed suitably-equipped for both military and civilian operations except this one ?

@ THERENAISSANCEMAN. I think EDavis was referring to the fact that there is no copyright in China and there is infact a large economy in copied goods, whether it be cars or anything. Its got nothing to do with the fact China is where a car might be produced in the first place. Your argument for the H1 being what all SUVs be compared to because "what SUV is designed suitably-equipped for both military and civilian operations except this one" simply can NOT be a reason for for SUVs to be compared to this vehicle. I had a chuckle when I read that. It might pull of the "utility" part of the name off, but it sure is not sporty. It can go off road, yes. It does not handle on road. and is the size of a house. it is out of place in any country other than america. Put simply, it cannot be a benchmark for SUVs.

Actually SuperMan, the Hummer is also perfectly at home in Canada as well, what with us having the second biggest land mass in the world and sprawling, efficient, fluid highways where Hummer drivers, a substantial amount, drive in comfort, ease and peace.

A small part of America died today, but I'm sure that something monstrous and angry like the Hummer will come on the market sooner or later.

It's not really that sad to me. 98% of Hummers on the road were just re-bodied Chevy trucks, they weren't true Hummers to me. The real ones were on the battlefield and can probably be picked up pretty cheap at a Govt auction. Also, the U.S. military is currently in the process of finding a more suitable, more bomb-proof Humvee replacement. Maybe we'll get a civilian version of that too.

Ya, like Edavis said, the Hummer was okay but it wasn't the real deal and i always preferred the Yukon before and after the H2.

"China's national government...declined the transaction...to encourage smaller...vehicles" I love the environment! But it seems to me that China has here made a move to reject this value shifting behemoth from making it's way into Chinese popular culture, to the detriment of China's growing motor industry. Clearly if the rest of the Chinese motor industry were to feel under pressure to compete with Hummer, the environmental impact would be huge, given a population that size. So the Hummer was rejected on both cultural and ecological grounds.

Ya...too bad China is full of ****. They're the worlds biggest polluters and it has very little to do with their motor industry...but sure, let them not build hummer because that'll make up for all the toxic crap they spew...toxic crap that can be felt and in some days seen coming into the American South Pacific coast.

The main reason they declined the deal was because of the whole Google thing. I bet u the Chinese government canceled it because they would rather see it closed and have Americans lose jobs rather than helping us get out of our own shit hole. Their doing it to stab us in the back, o well thanks for the help China :(. I'd like to add Im not one that is into Political crap but it seems like they did this to spite us. It would've been nice to see the brand saved and live on but it would've never been the same. So a part of me is glad it didnt happen another is broken to see a great off roading monster die and all those people lose their jobs. Again I always like mentioning this, my 2006 BMW M5 SMG gets 7.1mpg, my 2003 HUMMER H2 gets 9.3mpg. My point, please dont hate on em cause they get crappy mpg's cause cars like AMG's M-Powers dont do much better. If I didnt off road or have a heavy foot I'd be getting 13mpg's or better. For a 3 ton truck it aint that bad could be worse but not as bad as most sports cars :).

listen people, while the govt motor team up with media & the U.S. govt to torn down toyota, don't forget they were bailed out by our taxpayer money, they were in deep shit due to their mis-management, short-sight-profit-making direction, poor products... not long ago. now they're trying to use such dirty tricks to put down toyota so they can get back on their feet! who's next? honda? V.W.? shame on govt motor!!

What the hell doe that have to do with the hummer article? But what the American government is doing isnt trying to shut down toyota or screw them because our own cars are doing poorly, were trying to hold them responsible for their own actions. Because of their negligence 30+ people have died and there could be more because toyota is still hiding the truth on y the cars accelerate on there own. Were just holding them accountable for their actions until they show and tell us the problem has been resolved which is the right thing were doing. So I just dont understand y people r saying Americans are trying to shut toyota down because there car sales r doing poorly, Toyota builds most of its North American cars in the States, so y would we try to close down toyota and shut down factories to have more people outta work? Like I said just trying to hold em responsible which is the right thing were doing!

i never said govt motor team up with media & U.S. Govt to shut down toyota, actually, they know they couldn't. what i meant was, i hate to see such dirty trick by them to help the big-3, the largest industry in the U.S. & meltdown in 2009. this Hummer news is a "reminder" how govt motor failed & waste our taxpayer money. btw, 30 ppl died vs 10 millions+ car sold & still on the road... i hate rthat stupid crazy woman who couldn't drive a lexus or slam on the brake...

30 is still a large number even one death is still something, and if u watched the full clip of her speaking she tried slamming on the brakes and shifting the car into p,r,n,d and it still kept going until she slammed on the e-brake and slammed on the brakes the car started slowing after a while so she wasn't stupid or crazy, she tried.....

@sebfill55: u sure believe everything u've heard on that clip?? 90% of people can't have clear mind when in accident. plus, accident always in split second. & u believe that clip? a person in emergency can call police & talkin on the phone, detail explain what's going on while trying all those to stop a vehicle? don't tell me u really believe it...u are so naive! it's either the driver lied on the phone, or the whole thing is a make-up circus!

Sorry Sebfill, for all we know an element in the U.S. Goverment could have paid that lady to say a falsely written account of the events in question and shed some crocodile tears. Always remember what humans are capable of. I saw alot of her speaking on TV...and i don't believe all of it. She goes through soo much and then randomly the car just decides to come to a stop...after failing to do so through ALL of her actions. Im a Christian god-fearing/worshipping man but i don't think it was some sort of miraculous Godly intervention.

super car muscle man...i did not see America RESPECT international patent rights when it conducted wholesale sequestration of both British and German military technologies in order to suit its own purpose after WW2 to begin with . so much for its worn-out democratic principles on freedom and equality towards every man . regarding the element of sportiness in which you say is completely lacking on the Humvee H1 ,it might interest you to know that the vehicle was designed with one purpose in mind...TO GO TO WAR . things don't particularly get any ballsier , rather , sportier than that ... unless of course your idea of the word sporty means blowing off some steam around your local drag racing circuit or perhaps your occasional trips to the grocery store . i rest my case
