Audi A1 Spotted on the Street - 4 model variants planned

An S1 with a 1.4 liter turbo and 180 bhp is in the works for a 2012 release

Here is a spy shot of an Audi A1 caught roaming the streets of Barcelona.

Notice ahead of the A1 the Chevy Suburban with the protruding platform at the rear. It could be that Audi was shooting an advertisement for the new model, which is set to debut at the Geneva auto show next month.

This Audi looks to be wearing S-Line trimmings with what appear to be 17 or 18-inch rims, a rear spoiler and integrated diffuser on the rear bumper.

The A1 is set to debut with three VW-sourced engines on offer. Those would be two petrol/gasoline engines, a 1.2 and 1.4 liter, and a 1.6 liter diesel.

According to Autocar, Audi intends to produce four variants of the A1 - a 3-door, 5-door, a cabriolet and S1 sport model.

The S1 will likely share a lot with the VW Polo GTI and will use a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine with around 180 PS (132 kW / 178 hp). That engine will be coupled to Audi's 7-speed, double-clutch S-tronic gearbox. The S1 is due in 2012. It is also being reported that the S1 will not be an all-wheel drive - making it the first Audi sport model without the brand's storied quattro system.

The Audi A1 will go on sale later this year, probably shortly after the car's introduction at the Geneva show. The first of the future variants, the 5-door A1, will likely only come in early 2011.

Or it will be cannibalized by Polo or Ibiza. Why should I pay more for the four rings when a Polo GTI or Ibiza Cupra - same platform, engine and gearbox - cheaper than Audi S1 are available?

For the same reason the Cayanne is the best selling Porsche.

The S1 only in 2012? While the Seat Cupra has been around for some time and Polo GTI will be released this summer... they're essentially the same.

I hate to be the dissenter in the ranks, but I am not sure I like it. It seems to high, not wide enough and the lights are too large. It looked great in the studio shots but on the street I am very far from being convinced.

The seems to be a great, but if I was looking for a fast hot-hatch, I would pick the Golf GTI.

Looks like they stole some design elements from Citroen, put 'em on a Q5 and then shrunk that car.

Don?t mix things... A1 sharing "almost" the same platform, but that "almost" makes very big differs such as multi-link rear suspension for example...

Real nice look! A pic on the streets without any photoshop treatment is the real test wich decide what car is beautiful and the Audi A1, at least in this pic looks beautiful :)
