Audi Takes Another Jab at BMW with Latest TV Commercial

On the offensive

Audi has launched a new ad campaign that takes jabs at Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes.  Airing during U.S. coverage of the Winter Olympics, the ads stress Audi's ability to compete with more popular luxury brands.

The first spot, dubbed Friendly Competition, says "...there's a winner and a loser, a runner up, second best, the one who fell a little bit short - our friends at BMW know exactly how this feels." It ends with the tagline "Audi has defeated BMW in three straight Car and Driver comparisons."

The second commercial, Spell, shows people in a daze talking about what they've been told to think about cars. Audi effectively says Lexus is "beige and predictable", Mercedes is a "hollow status symbol", and BMW is for poseurs. When an Audi drives by, the actors come out of their daze - the spell is broken.

BMW vs Audi ads have become kind of a tradition in the US, good for both cause they get both more attention in the US. by the way, i like the 2nd one better

It seems that Audi like to laugh at BMW.....

But that advertising approach does seem to show that they haven't quite got the confidence of BMW and Merc.

Lol...agree about Lexus being beige and predictable (although they should also have added that a Lexus can be uncontrollable when you least expect it...), but can't understand the 'poseur' image for BMW (ok, it's true to a certain extent, but not so much recently) and 'hollow status symbol' for Merc...although of course, this might be since I am a Merc fan, but I still think it's quite untrue (plus why didn't they have the decency to use the newer version of the C-Class?)...but I can find plently of comparison tests where Mercedes beat Audi. All I can is...waiting eagerly for BMW and Merc to respond with their own adverts :)

Merc will not respond just as Jay-Z will not respond to Soulja Boy. Period.

i don't think Mercedes will reply, they will try to stay serious and let the Bavarians have their little ad war. i like all three companies, if i were to chose one car from BMW, Audi and MB, i'd take the SLS.

Yes, come to think of it I don't think Mercedes will respond...I mean, I don't think I've ever seen a commercial where they slate a rival so unashamedly and so childishly (and trust me, I've seen plenty); I was referring more to BMW responding to Audi. Unfortunately, Audi have been at this for a long time; there is an ad on YouTube about an Audi 'running circles' around the Mercedes W124 (which was over-engineered and by far better than the Audi) and BMW 5-Series of that time. Then there's a keychain ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf8xsX39HSY ...don't know whether to laugh or to pity them.

I think poking at your competition like this is childish. Both BMW and Audi do this. They should stop, because at least in my eyes, it makes them both look stupid, childish, arrogant and ignorant.

BMW - poseur Mercedes - hollow status symbol Lexus - beige and predictable Audi - ??? That's a problem. Which direction they want to go? Who should buy their cars? At least in Germany there are many russian immigrants driving Audi.

and who the hell reads "car and driver" anyway??? it is such a garbage magazine! their reviews make no sense whatsoever. this is a thoroughly childish ad campaign designed to compensate for a bland, vanilla pudding product. audi should know better than to take shots at M-B, get over a century of racing pedigree and decades of bullet-proof cars and then come talk to the public.

Car and Driver's readership is huge and therefore matters to manufacturers. The mag also is perceived as having a huge bias toward BMW. Secondly, I think it is a bit of clever marketing. It gets noticed and gets dialogue and that translates into sales. Comments made re: brand stereotypes are derived from research on consumer brand perception. So really, it's just a re-iteration of negative stereotypes that many people have of a brand.

I don't really like how Audi commercials try to compare the brand to Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. They seem to try to get across that 'the cool guy' drives an Audi and that anyone that drives anything else is a brainwashed stereotypical moron. Gives the impression that they're still suffering from an inferiority complex. Just show how awesome the cars you make are and don't feel the need to compare imo.

Audi doesn't represent a threat to BMW or Mercedes. And the prove is that BMW has sold 119.000 cars over 45.000$ in 2009 in the US market and Audi just sold a ridiculous 35.000 cars... I feel pity about audi, seriously!

it's still a ridiculous statement. the world comprises of a lot more than the US you know, and in Europe the A6 trounces the 5-Series and E-Class for sales, as does the A3 over the 1-Series and A-Class and B-Class and CLC, and the TT destroys the Z4 and SLK. the A4 is also a close second to the 3-Series (with the C-Class lagging in 3rd), and A5s are becoming a hell of a lot more common. worldwide, Audi recorded an increase in sales figures last year, whereas MB and BMW reported a decrease. not only that but Audi has manufacturing in India now, which means that their cars aren't subjet to 97% import duty on foreign manufactured cars. that's a HUGE step, so give it another 5 years and Audi will quite easily be king of the hill a Mercedes dealer recently told me that they're getting more and more worried about Audi, and they're losing customers every day. to say Audi doesn't represent a threat is incredibly ignorant and shows little understanding of the current car market

Carvalho, you're stating numbers from a BMW-Fanblog to back up your point of view and they're only based on a fraction of their model range. If you look at the worldwide sales of both companies, you'll realize that Audi sold 8000 units more than BMW did in January. Regarding only a part of one market and selling it as evidence of a 'good' company seems to me a little desperate.

I haven't been told, but I actually see everyday that Audis are bought by wannabes who ignore the fact that Audis are nothing but rebadged and significantly more expensive Passats or Golfs :) lol....

If that is the best slight you can come up with, then what should be said of those cars that are bested by Audis that "are nothing but rebadged and significantly more expensive Passats or Golfs :) lol...."? This constant reference to VW is just lame. Stranglely enough, it could work quite well in Audi's advertising.

especially as the Passat doesn't share a chassis with a single Audi, and the Golf was based on the A3's chassis as the A3 came first. i hate ignorant comments from ignorant people regarding Audi's so called badge engineering when they do nothing of the sort. every company shares bits under the surface. why don't you ask BMW where the engine for the MINI comes from? i'll give you a clue, it's Peugeot. i'd much prefer a VW engine in my Audi than a Peugeot engine in my pocket sized BMW

i dont like this taunting way of advertising, i believe every good product speaks for itself. but come on its clear that Audi is ahead of the game right now, they both engineer and design cars better than the competition they always have. Its Audi's time to shine.
February 18, 2010 3:47 pm
Ads like this makes it look like Audi has a small penis and that they are insecure about themselves... Also in my market it is Audi's that are being driven by poseurs and is a hollow status symbol for people who want to think they are fashionable and smarter than everyone else... Like 2010S5 said they should focus their message on how nice their cars are...or perhaps Audi of America has a guilt-trip that their cars are just re-tuned upscale VW's and that the Phaeton is actually a better buy than the A6...

Then you should try an Audi. It is nothing like passats and golfs. The standard is much higher in for instance an Audi A6 than a Passat. And to the guy Stating Audi doesn't threat BMW or Mercedes. USA isn't the only market in the world. Audi is selling more cars than for instance BMW and Mercedes in Europe. Only here in Norway which is a very rich country Audi sells almost 1.5 times the cars BMW sells.. Mercedes is way down the line though. And the commercial is simply genius, just look at how much response it has gotten here. it sticks in the subconsciousness and I bet a lot from this site is going to mention this commercial to people they know!
