After 17 years, Alfa is prepared for a comeback

While Alfa Romeo made a limited return to the United States with the 8C Competizione, a full scale onslaught could occur in 2012.

During a speech last week, Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne said "I'm a lot more confident now that Alfa Romeo will reconstitute a product offering that is acceptable globally, and more in particular in the United States and Canada. There is a strong likelihood that the brand will be back here within the next 24 months."

While details are limited, Alfa Romeo's North American lineup would likely include the 159 replacement dubbed Giulia (a mid-sized sedan and station wagon) and a Chrysler 300-based 166 replacement. These models could be joined by the MiTo, considering several have been spotted in Metro Detroit.

Alfa's return to the U.S. could be a key turning point for the brand. In past decade, sales have been in a virtual freefall. Last year, Alfa was only able to sell 102,000 vehicles - a decline of 101,000 units compared to the year 2000.

The 159 has such presence, something the Germans aren't. The Giulia has to be very special indeed to keep its potentials away from the German car dealerships. In other words, rear-wheel drive!

The aggressive looks of the 159 and rearwheeldrive, would be a perfect combination.

I believe that, except for the Mito and 500, that RWD is a necessity for Alfa to make it in the states. I think that they also have to come in well below BMW, Mercedes and Audi in price. They just don't currently have a reputation in the United States that is going to fetch that level of pricing. The last Fiat based products of any consequence in the USA were the Yugo, X1/9 and strada. These just don't make you think "a legitimate alternative to premium German cars". There are few people alive in the country who owned or even really remember Alfa Sypders. It has been decades since these had any kind of market size here. They weren't exactly seen as reliable cars, either. It will be great to have Alfa back, they just have to have a plan that makes more sense than the ones that have been leaked in the last couple of years.

New Giulia and a bigger car on Chrysler 300C platform is needed, or else it will be a fail.

I agree, and if you add a RWD-I6 that slots between the 3 and 5 series, you would have a winner. Some German perfection would be given up by Americans for Italian style and a lower price tag. The marginal costs for some of BMW's improvements are very high. Think magnesium blocks, etc. There is room to offer the platform configuration of a BMW at a much lower cost and still make good money. The last 10% or so of perfection costs maybe 30% more.

I absolutely agree but BMW has dropped the ball in the last 5-8 years, they are quality but lack the certain something that they used to have, they drive alright but they have lost the passion, however clinical and sanitary it was it was still there, and now its gone Id rather have an overheated alfa than a completely soulless BMW

The Brera Is exactly what i want to see, Its a painfully beautiful car, AWD a decent motor and GOD THOSE LOOKS, The 8C is one of the sexiest cars ever made, only a few others are that good looking and the Brera is one of them, But Any Alfa is better than no Alfa, And if they are basing a model on the 300C platform it will be RWD I just hope its not a body with that POS 2.7 in it
