Toyota FT-86 Design Rejected - Confirmed for North American

Toyota FT-86 Design Rejected - Confirmed for North American

Toyota has decided a new direction is needed with the FT-86, and has not given the greenlight to the concept shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.  News of the decision comes from blog 7tune, which is reporting that Toyota's U.S. design house, Calty Design Research, will design the final product instead of the European and Japanese teams.

Still, FT86Club snagged an interview with Toyota US chief Jim Lentz, who confirmed the car will come to North America.  He said the car will not be a revival of the Supra name in North America, and that it will be brought to market sooner, rather than later.

We expect that the car's final design will be approved in the coming months, as the market launch is imminent.  If it is true that the European team's Tokyo concept was rejected in November, designers have had four months to work out the problems.

Of course, this decision raises many questions, as one look on the comments posted to WCF suggests the Tokyo concept design was popular with Toyota enthusiasts.

The Toyota FT-86 is a joint project with Subaru, who will provide a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter boxer engine.  Subaru will also sell a version of the car, possibly modifying its body.

"He said the car will not be a revival of the Supra name in North America..." Who's the idiot interviewer who wasted this precious branding question opportunity? Isn't it more likely that the FT-86 is branded a "Celica", considering its target market segment and price-point?

Well, the Supra won't come to America in the near future(next 1-2 years), but I'm sure that even Jim Lentz dose not know that if a Supra will come or not to the US after 2012, 2013.

If they will launch this model in this centuty will be good, but i'm afraid that after about 3 years of not doing at least a final sketch .. we will not have the oportunity in this life to comment the Toyota coupe or the Subaru model ... too bad ..

Thought the FT-86 looked pretty good... Not quite sure what they're up to. Looks like they can't deliver this, either!

Toyota does not need to build a fast car until they can figure out how to make it stop. Just sayin'.

By design, you mean they're just going to start gluing down the floormats of Prototypes and clay models right? And btw, the whole point of this concept was to have it ready for NA. Nice work on pointing out the already obvious WCF.

They got this all wrong! Subaru engines are junk! They should put Toyota engines in a Subaru chassis!

This REALLY concerns me. I think that the FT-86 and it's Subaru derivative were really perfect for what the respective manufacturers needed to do in the segment. I hope that Toyota hasn't decided to go the "beige" way, and create something for 'everybody'. Unfortunately I'm now expecting something less exciting, and less revolutionary...

My guess is that Toyota looked at the production costs of the FT-86 design and likely rejected it as too expensive to produce. As such, they've turned to Calty, and we could see a more production-ready design at least by SEMA this fall.

Italian had design "award" they called "Plagiarius". That design deserves it. Even the hood almost from Laguna I, front intake from PSA Citroen,... Everything taken somewhere, nothing own. Typical chinese. Stick on Rolex fakes.
