Toyota Recalls Prius and other models - Vows Quality Committment
2010 Toyota Prius

Toyota has announced the recall of 437,000 vehicles worldwide to fix software that controls the brakes.  The recall affects 2009-2010 model year units of the Toyota Prius, Prius PHV plug-in, and Lexus HS 250h.  Also included is the Japan-spec 250h, known as the Toyota Sai.

Sales of the Lexus HS 250h and the Toyota Sai have been temporarily suspended.

According to a press release from Toyota, the world's largest automaker says customers of these vehicles have experienced inconsistent braking "during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the ABS is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction."  An update to the braking software is expected to improve "ABS response time, as well as the system's overall sensitivity to tire slippage."

"I apologise for causing trouble and worries for many customers over the quality and safety of Toyota," said Toyota president Akio Toyoda in a news conference today.  In response to over 200 complaints related to the vehicle already, Toyoda said, "We sincerely acknowledge safety concerns from our customers. We have decided to recall as we regard safety for our customers as our foremost priority."

Separately, the company is also recalling 7,300 2010 Toyota Camry models that could develop a hole in the front brake fluid line.  The gradual problem is caused by friction between that line and the power steering hose.

Toyota's terrible 2010 has led to the company recalling more than 10.37 million vehicles since January.  Aside from the new brake-related recalls, the company has recalled over four million vehicles affected by sticking accelerators.  A further five million vehicles with floor mats that also cause the gas pedal to stick have also been recalled.  Meanwhile, a former Toyota company lawyer is accusing the company of covering up and destroying evidence in up to 700 product liability lawsuits.

19 deaths and 2,000 complaints have been linked to sudden acceleration in Toyota vehicles, according to consumer advocates.

"We're committed to doing everything we can - as fast as we can - to restore consumer trust in Toyota, and these recalls are part of this effort," said Toyota Motors executive Jim Lentz. "We regret the inconvenience this recall will cause to Prius and HS 250h owners, and will do our best with the support of our dealers to make sure that it is conducted in the most trouble-free manner possible."

Not surprised and I am sure there are many other Toyota cars that should be recalled. But what a load of PR bullshit Toyota. Guess they failed to cover the damage control this time as they have always build bad unsafe or unreliable cars. If it is not because of the whole huha they won't want to lose millions of dollars by recalling their cars. Now their brand is in jeopardy at its stakes and have no choice but to do it. I don't trust Toyota cars and never will.

As if you have trusted them anyway? ....failed to cover it up? Check out what Ford is doing to their Fusion hybrid problems, do you hear about it on the news? Now why is that?

I believe Toyota and Ford builds good cars back then. When I say good meaning they're safe, properly build and well tested before they handed the key to the car owner or customer. I think Toyota would rather want to build a good image, reputation or brand rather than good products. As I was saying, they don't have a choice when their hero car which is the Prius hybrid is giving such a negative perception to the eco lovers. Honda, Kia, Hyundai and VW or even Ford and GM are smiling right now.

Yeah, if Toyota was an American company, they wouldn't get so much bad press about this in the US. Toyota has always been one of the companies that produce the most reliable cars in the world. At least the ones they make in Asia/Europe. Don't know if they build their American cars to an American quality standard.

For Aleksi: AYGO (Feb 2005 ? Aug 2009), iQ (Nov 2008 ? Nov 2009), Yaris (Nov 2005?Sep 2009), Auris (Oct 2006?5 Jan 2010), Corolla (Oct 2006?Dec 2009), Verso (Feb 2009?5 Jan 2010), Avensis (Nov 2008?Dec 2009), RAV4 (Nov 2005?Nov 2009). These are recalls in Europe (at least in my country). And these are the ones they build in Europe and Asia.

You're all talking about Toyota as a conceptual entity - "the company". Personally I think heads should roll. A public apology? Is that really sufficient for 19 deaths caused by (probably criminal) negligence? Reputation? Preserving reputation is also getting rid of the people responsible.

THE Issue for Toyota is they took WAY too long to Recognize the Pedal Faults and ACT. They deserve all the BAD press they are getting... Mazda, Subaru and Suzuki would NEVER let it get this far out before ACTION.

Also by becoming the world's largest auto maker, everyone wants to take negative shots now.

That's correct, have you ever noticed that when Toyota became number one in the world they bragged about it? They didn't coz this is exactly what would happen. Everybody wants a piece of Toyota. The question is, how long will this end? An example is the same phenomenon is experienced with Ford fusion yet, no negative headlines about it. Regardless if its just a few units. The media did not bother about it coz Ford is not No.1. Just my opinion.

The Ford recall for a similar hybrid braking problem was covered online and in the press, however because no one died from the news it was not as big a story, and it only included about 18,500 units. The scale of the Fusion Hybrid problem was what determined the press of that story. I agree that being #1 put a target on Toyota, however the results are simply results. I read several stories in April 2009 while on vacation in Seattle, where the Prius is a #1 seller. What Toyota is not talking about is the sudden acceleration cases that involved the Prius, injuring several owners. These owners stories all had one thing in common, when they went to Toyota with the problem, they were stonewalled. Toyota simply said it was all driver error. One woman's Prius drove over an embankment, and landed at the edge of a river. Sudden acceleration happens, with all brands, makes, and models. The problem seems to be that while they are acknowledging the braking problem, they are leaving out any sudden acceleration data. Due to this, we will see Toyota in the news again after this recall, and when we do, no amount of PR money will win back the goodwill a second or third time. I think the root-cause analysis will eventually find that with so many computers, and various drive-by-wire technologies, advanced cars are reaching a point where that electronic directives are too complex to ensure consistent operation. It can be fixed, but for now, I think Toyota, and others are guessing their way through this mess, and praying they got it right.

Yeah many car companies recalled there cars but no out opened his mouth and talk about them, and now when Toyota became the no.1 car company and started to recall there cars poeple started to eat toyota alive! But what ever happened to them still toyota maked the best offroad SUVs such as the Land Cruiser, Tundra, Hilux, and FJ, and some good cheap price saloons like Camry and the Avalon, even if they recalled these cars still they are great.

Just read that the Corolla has steering problems: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2010/02/toyota-corolla-to-be-probed-for-steering-problems/1 Per text: "Complainants have compared the movement to being buffeted by strong winds, sliding on black ice, or hydroplaning. They said that after trying to straighten the car, it can overcorrect -- requiring the driver to use a tight, persistent, two-handed grip on the wheel to travel in a straight line." I thought the above was normal for a Toyota! My mom always had Toyota's, so I grew up on them!

... hmmm: maybe she deliberately bought a toyota so i wouldn't drive her car? (as an ex-work colleague deliberatly bought a stick shift 350Z as her teenage daughters couldn't drive sticks!)

People are used to Toyota so it will take sometime to switch to something else if it is ever going to happen

The recalls aren't over, as a user said the Corolla's have a steering problem once going over 40 MPH, numerous crashes were reported in the U.S. due to loss of control including a grandmother with her grandchildren going off the road and down a cliff and finally hitting a tree. A class action law suit is under way in Canada for 1 billion dollars, I can't imagine how many more are on there way in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Wow...this is one big mother of a dilemma they've gotten themselves into. I hope they turn things around soon if they want to keep things afloat. And I think Alfafox5 is right, Toyota better be honest and come out clean with all the issues if they want to regain consumer confidence. I also think that the Prius has more than just Braking issues, I think it also has Acceleration issue. Better be safe than sorry Toyota.

I stick by Toyota as one of my favorite makes but this was a very, very costly mistake. Toyota as many say here do not have the most exciting line-up and with this problem their reputation for reliability and quality is tarnished and killed in the minds of the stupid and naive(im not talking about anyone here). It was good to see Toyotas Ad last night about the situation, their apology and their underlying statement about a loss of honor. It was quicker than i expected and true the Japanese culture of living by honor. They knowingly or unknowingly made a mistake and now the heads themselves apologize for their dishonor.
