Toyota President apologises for global recall
Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation

Toyota's top executive has broken his silence regarding his company's worst crisis in years. Company President and CEO Akio Toyoda, grandson of the brand's founder Kiichiro Toyoda, said he was sorry for the recalls.

"I would like to take this opportunity to apologise from the bottom of my heart for causing many of our customers concern after the recalls across several models in several regions," he was quoted. "Believe me, Toyota cars are safe."

Confidence in Toyota has plummeted steadily over the past couple of weeks due to these problems. Company stocks have lost about US$30 billion in value since the start of the crisis but bounced back a little on Friday after better-than-expected quarterly financial results. In the past decade or so about 8 million Toyota cars have been recalled. Up to 19 crash deaths in the US were blamed on the accelerator problem over that period.

Meanwhile another headache for the world's largest automaker in sales seems to be developing fast. So far 124 complaints have been logged by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the Prius brake problem but Toyota says it has already instituted a software fix for it.

good one!!! **sarcastic** hahhahah. i never knew car companies were perfect, but even with this recall, toyota still has a better name in the game than all its american counterparts. i never heard one apology from the american CEO's for being greedy, selfish and ruining the electric car program they had going on in the 90's. so suck on that :P

Nice reply CarCrazy. At least Toyoda conducts himself with some humbility and honor.

I have never been a fan of Toyota. I have driven the Corolla, Camry, Highlander, Matrix but never liked the way they feel. And the "quality" veil has always been shaky. Go Honda!

WHAT IS THE FIX... The Fix puts a Shim behind the pedal..that is all This Shim or Bar, increases the Pedal Return Spring rate..that is ALL it does.. That is ALL the FIX is. The Pedal will retract faster/stronger and quicker, but is it a long term, fix?? Time Will Tell... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDIXQfB5BTE

A - it actually doesn't change the return tension at all, it shifts the interior guides on the electronic sending surface to reduce or eliminate the friction which causes the return issue. So yes it is a permanent solution.

Toyotas are driven by dumb people who dislike driving and terrible on the road. Toyotas are like McDonalds where they serves bad products and will continue to spoil its customers. Guess the truth hurts, right Toyota?

What a bold generalization. So a couple of pedal and brake problems will offset a history of reliability and quality. I personally dislike recent Toyotas and Lexus' because they're so ugly but some people happen to enjoy the consistent, smooth (and boring) ride quality and driving experience.

Supra, the Celica GT4, the MR2 is probably few of the good well engineered Toyotas, aside from the rear-wheel driven Lexuses, or even the McMerc SLR wannabe Lexus LFA. But I dare you to name me any good Toyotas on sale here today

Your definition of a 'good' car may be very different from that of the people who actually buy these cars. And how exactly is a LF-A an SLR wannabe?

Well Nederina, i consider Lexus a Toyota so i would say to that; IS-F. Sure the IS-F isn't as good as the M3 but who would expect that ? The M3 has been around for well over 10 years and has gradually/consistently evolved into a better car, it would be hard for any make to beat them at their own game first time out. So in summation, what is a good "Toyota" ? the IS-F

No need to say all these words for Toyota, and I laugh when I read some of you saying about the way there cars drive, you want them to build a car that drives like a Ferrari with Merc quality? They have some good cars and I like them such as the land Cruiser and the Avalon

For the same money you could get better cars. Just like womens, you could settle with one that is good in bed. Maybe Toyota drivers plays it safe. I have to say Honda, Mazda and Nissans or even Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Subarus are so good these days.

Find me a car better than the Land Cruiser for the same money? Or the Hilux. Ignoring those two models, let me explain to you in simple terms why those suggestions you offered are useless. Honda: Overpriced Junk. Mazda: Good but not as good as the Fords they are based on. Suzuki: One good car. Mitsubishi: Junk. Subaru: Junk.

I have a 100 Series Land Cruiser and got it after considering nearly every full-size SUV in the market at that time (Escalade, GX 470, Navigator, Yukon Denali, QX56). Although I won't agree that it is the best bang for the buck, it is a true off-roader, what a real SUV was meant to be, making every other SUV something for soccer moms to play with.

quote: In the past decade or so about 8 million Toyota cars have been recalled. Up to 19 crash deaths in the US were blamed on the accelerator problem over that period. it sounds nothing major...as far as i remember, some other brand (especially US brands) had more recall history & caused more death & accidents than this! simply saying, it's all media circus, & i can smell "some" automakers paid the media under table to create these series of "shows" to torn down the best automaker - Toyota.

Take your hand off it. Whilst recalls are routine in the auto industry, anything that ends in a death can't be called "nothing major". Imagine if it was your friends or family involved in a fatal stuck accelerator incident? I bet you would be singing a different tune.

i'm not talking life of coz sideskraper... i mean, compare with US Automaker recall history, that's "nothing major"! btw, luckily, all my friends & families who'd driving Toyota are all happy & believe in their quality. & they're smart enough to know when such things happened to any car, there is a brake paddle, or shift to neutual! NOT yelling "oh no, gas paddle stuck, help! the car won't stop..." in ANY KIND of accident, the driver 1st reaction should be the brake paddle, right? don't tell me you don't know it, Sidekraper! otherwise, you are one of those dumb driver on the road, regardless what you are driving or has a stuck gas paddle or not!

I agree Toyota's are very ugly automobiles & I am glad they are having these issues shows what they really are... Reliability came in the price of peoples lives & who knows how many other deaths have been caused that have gone unreported... I heard a video recording of a cell phone call to 911 online months ago of a man & his family that was taken down of the internet of course, but the peoples gas peddle was stuck in their Toyota & they were heading towards an intersection & Im sure you can figure out what happened!! They mass produce these cars & ended up becoming sloppy.. Everybody talks about American cars & German car reliability issues but as far as I can remember no American or German cars have ever had such issues!!! Toyota is getting what they deserve!

ccrispy, check, or google US Automakers recalls & death toll history before you made such comments. that may suprise you...this is all madia circus. plus they've got paid by "someone" to manipulate the issues & enlarge it as big incidents, PLUS government help to torn down Toyota, so the US Auto industry can benefits... you see the whole picture yet?

I find it funny that idiots have to turn this Toyota problem into an anti-American issue. "Oh my God, Toyota is in huge trouble!" "Yeah, but have you looked at how horrible and satanic US automakers are? They are ten times worse!" The fact of the matter is, after years of having their dealer agents and employers bash all things non-Japanese and insult the intelligence of whoever owns an American car because of their quality, Toyota has shown that is is not the all-powerful, all-perfect, defect-immune super savior that it pretended to be. That fact will not change because, "hey, US automakers have also had recalls!"
