Brakes may experience momentary ineffectiveness when switching between hydraulic and electronic systems

The news just keeps getting worse and worse for Toyota.

Now, the storied Japanese automaker has had to admit there have been problems with the anti-lock braking system on the celebrated Toyota Prius hybrid model.

The company has received about 180 complaints from Prius owners in both the U.S. and Japan about unresponsive brakes. The flaw is due to the dual nature of the gasoline-electric hybrid Prius - the brakes may become momentarily ineffective as the vehicle switches between the hydraulic brakes and the electronically controlled braking system. The brake system flaw requires a software reprogramming to fix.

Toyota has said it has fixed the problem in its Prius production but has not yet decided whether to issue a recall for Prius models which were delivered to customers before the fix in late January. The brake problem in the Prius dates back to 2007.

Toyota has recently had to recall about 4.5 million vehicles worldwide due to a gas-pedal flaw which can cause the accelerator to stick. The company estimates the cost of the recall to be about $2 billion, including a loss of sales. Toyota's stock value has fallen about 22 percent since the recall was announced on the 21st of January.

This is not good at all...... they have admitted that they knew about the problem but decided not to issue a recall yet?!!?!? It sounds like to me they were more interested in keeping their reputation intact by not issuing this recall while they were having such heavily publicized problems but chose to wait. Just because nobody has died from this problem they didn't deem it urgent even though this fault affects a major component of the vehicle. This looks like it is a corporation that doesn't care about the welfare of it's customers and only about it's reputation........ I am appalled and saddened by what is happening with this whole situation. I studied Toyota while at university including their fundamental philosophy called the Toyota Way (google it) and it seems that a select few and their selfish decisions have begun to unwind what has taken Toyota nearly 50 years to build........ If decisions like this are any indication to what is going on in Toyota today then they deserve what's coming to them.

I think God is trying to punish Toyota for not producing an interesting car for a few years. If they release the FT-86 and MR2 replacement, none of this would have been happening. ^^

"the number one selling car in America ((which is built in Japan :P ))" ahem: http://www.toyota.com/about/our_business/operations/manufacturing/ "people still prbly won't buy American cars" From a previous WCF article: "In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, GM's general manager of retail sales support, Steve Hill, said "...we're just getting barraged by phone calls from our dealers and our field personnel telling us about ... customers from Toyota calling and stopping in."

Alright, fine. The number one selling car in America which is built by Toyota, a Japanese company. (...but I'm assuming you must be a bit slow to not know what I ment by that... not to be mean or anything....) and I was JUST going off what has happened in the past. It's rarely "cool" to drive an American car in America because normally Japanese (German, Korean...) cars look better and last longer, where as American cars... not so much. (normally)

I always recommended Mitsubishi and still will be recommending Mitsubishi. Outlander V6 is a beautiful car. The Lancer is good not to mention the Evo X.

I own a jdm lancer rs turbo, It hasn't let me down yet. The problem with toyota nowadays is that they don't want to build a car, they want to build an Ipod on wheels. Unfortunately software glitches don't loose your tracks, they lose your brakes.

i think that kinda makes their ad campaign rather ironic. A temporary pause (in brake effectiveness). To put you (head) first (through the windshield).

come on... my car didn't brake for 0.1 of a second while it switched from hydraulic to electric, oh no I'm going to die... please. This is probably very rare otherwise they will have caught it and since they didn't probably would have gone unnoticed had it not been for such a litigious population.

I for one think that all manufacturers going to drive by wire technology will be in the long run faced with problems. All these sensors in your brake and gas pedal, steering will eventually start showing signs of wear, and either stop working completely or start malfunctioning. Electronics don't last as long as a stainless steel wire, or cast iron gears. We will see what happens when that day comes, maybe not today, but we will see in 10-15 years. I have driven a few cars with drive by wire tech, i despise them. Especially when they are coupled with an automatic transmission. I find myself bored, and with no idea of what the car is doing. No feedback, at all. I'll take my hydraulic clutch and brake pedal, gear steering, and wire operated throttle. I prefer the feeling, and to me that is real driving, when you feel the car and you act based on that. Comparison would be having sex with a blow up doll, or a real woman. Both get you there, but one is a journey and a story that is different every time.

I know that Ford just issued a very similar software fix for the Fusion/Milan hybrid models because some customers were complaining of a "funny" feel during the braking process. Fusion Hybird owners are being informed of this change and will get updated hybrid drive system software to improve the "feel" of the brakes.
