While General Motors and Ford are trying to lure a few U.S. customers away from Toyota in the midst of Toyota's safety fiasco, Volkswagen is setting more long-term goals.  The German automaker is targetting sales increases to over 10 million units by 2018, according to Bloomberg News.

That would promote VW for the largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in Europe to the largest in the world.  2009 VW sales were up 1.1% to 6.29 million, while Toyota sales dipped to 7.81 million, a 13% drop.

Those numbers, and the future target, is a combined total for VW and many of their brands.  The German automaker owns Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Seat, and Skoda.  The figures do not include Porsche, which will be integrated with Volkswagen in 2011.  Karmann is likely not included as well, as the small manufacturer will not be merged in until 2012.

"With the implementation of 'Strategy 2018,' the Volkswagen group is seeking global economic and environmental leadership in the automotive industry by 2018," a VW statement reportedly said.  The strategy includes extensive cost cutting in effort to create a pretax profit higher than 8% of sales, but will not elminate research and development funding for electric and hybrid vehicles.

VW intends to topple Toyota

10 million sales by 2018 is new goal

Volkswagen, Europe's largest carmaker, said it plans to increase sales to more than 10 million vehicles by 2018 as it seeks to dethrone Japan's Toyota.

VW's management board approved business targets, including profit margins, measured by earnings before interest and taxes, of at least 5% for the automotive business in the "medium term," Wolfsburg, Germany-based Volkswagen said in a statement Wednesday. The target doesn't include Porsche, which will be integrated by 2011, it said.

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has a target of beating Toyota, the world's biggest carmaker, in global deliveries and profit margins. VW sold 6.29 million cars and SUVsworldwide last year, an increase of 1.1% from 2008. Toyota said last month that 2009 vehicle sales, including those of affiliates, fell 13% to 7.81 million vehicles.

"It shows plenty of ambition in the whole Volkswagen Group," said Stephen Pope, chief global equity strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald in London. "By being able to learn from Porsche's discipline, it gives them that extra springboard."

By 2018, Volkswagen, which includes the Audi luxury division and Czech unit Skoda, should have a pretax profit that exceeds 8% of sales, the company said.

Volkswagen shares fell 18 cents, or 0.3%, to 65.72 euros after rising as much as 1% on the Frankfurt exchange before the announcement. The automaker has a market value of 25.7 billion euros ($36 billion).

"With the implementation of 'Strategy 2018,' the Volkswagen group is seeking global economic and environmental leadership in the automotive industry by 2018," VW said in its statement. The plan would include "significant cost cutting, in part through the more prominent use of the modular design principle."

VW foresees steps to promote research and development of hybrid and electric cars, according to the statement. VW will also maintain "strict discipline" on spending and aim to keep the expenditure on fixed assets in automaking at about 6% of sales in the medium and long term.

I hope they do. VW has always produced better cars than Toyota, IMHO. And before you all lose your pants, I felt this way for years. Not because of Toyota's current problems.

"The strategy includes extensive cost cutting..." Let's hope that The Gas Pedal Department continues to receive full funding.

Karmann's being acquired by Volkswagen? Does anyone happen to know who from?

as far as I know Karmann is (still) independent. they work with many car manufacturers - from Europe and the US. VW will make a good deal out of this. not only will BMW and some US manufacturers have to look elsewhere for convertible modules, but they will also be able to manufacture the mentioned modules "inhouse".

Yes I agree, one of the problem is well known DSG gearbox which breakdown last year on VW and Audi cars. So much for quality VW and the list of quality of car brands, conducted by well known German car magazin, in the which VW is in the bottom of the list doesnt sure me that VW have good bulit quality.

Thats fine VW but please don't lose sight of those of us that actually enjoy driving and don't want a car that drives us (into a wall). Im looking at you Toyota and apparently so is VW.

SkadV8 Check your facts! The problem with DSG's are very limited. I had a DSG in my 2008 R32 and never had any problems with it and now I also own a 2010 JSW TDI with a DSG and it's been problem free.

I don't understand how most of the media are so bias that they are stating Toyota has a spotless history in reliability. I beg to differ,if anyone has access to All-DATA one can look up recalls. My point is that Toyota has had many-many more recalls in history than the current recalls that have gathered major attention recently because people have died. So, I looked up a Camry and Passat for recalls in All-DATA and discovered that the Camry has incredibly more recalls than the Passat. Go figure, sometimes I question how VW makes the media for ridiculous un-safety related recalls unlike Toyota safety recalls. It?s a good thing that Consumer reports will not give Toyota the ?Automatic? reliable reviews or the ?Red Dots? from now on. In other words, all manufactures have problems, let us not forget humans engineer them and build them. Viva VW and kick some @$$!!

Toyota is very good at hiding things. also making sure the competition gets bad press is part of the game.
