Toyota Prius brake complaints start pouring in
2010 Toyota Prius

Good for the environment, bad for your health?

With 'PedalGate' sweeping the globe, mounting reports are indicating the Toyota Prius is also affected by unintended acceleration - but faulty pedals and floor mats have nothing to do with it.

So far, about 100 complaints (two involving crashes) have been filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In Japan, the transport ministry has logged at least 14 complaints of acceleration-related problems with the Prius.

The case getting the most attention is Steve Wozniak's (Apple's co-founder) Prius. During a speech at the Discovery Forum, Wozniak said "I have many models of Prius that got recalled, but I have a new model that didn't get recalled. The new model has an accelerator that goes wild but only under certain conditions of cruise control. And I can repeat it over and over and over again safely." In a later interview with CNET, Wozniak stated "This is software. It's not a bad accelerator pedal. It's very scary, but luckily for me I can hit the brakes." Despite attempting to contact Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for three months, he was unable to get either organization to look for a software-related defect - until now.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has finally begun looking into a possible software glitch which could cause the Prius to accelerate unintentionally. According to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, "We're not finished with Toyota and are continuing to review possible defects and monitor the implementation of the recalls." While he didn't elaborate, several government sources have stated the review will include a look into possible electronic problems.

Despite the concern, Toyota is down-playing reports about a potential software problem. In an interview with Automotive News, Toyota spokesman John Hanson said "After many years of extensive testing, we've found no evidence of an electronic problem that could have contributed to unwanted acceleration. We've investigated many times and found no evidence to point to." His statement was echoed by Toyota's vice president of quality, Shinichi Sasaki, who added "We have not come across any case in which we have found a malfunction. But if any additional reports arise, we will conduct testing using all technology at our disposal."

However, many people aren't buying Toyota's explanation. Consumers have fled Toyota showrooms and the U.S. Congress has called the company to testify before the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee for investigations.

My friend's IS250 stalled in the middle of a dowin hill. she was fortunate that there weren't other cars around or would have crashed big. Lexus's comment, "she probably turned off the car or put in i nuetral" haha. They do have software glitch.

Hahaha. Yeah, we can put a man on the moon and build the F-22 and SR-71, but we can't build an accelerator pedal.

I wonder how much of what is being reported is media hype. Anyhow, if there was but one car company that can brave such a crisis it is Toyota, even though I personally don't care for their white-goods, **cough** I mean cars.

Let's image what happen in extreme situation: 1. Normal braking - regenerate braking quickly charge the battery, nice! 2. Electronic system malfunction/Sticky throttle - now both the engine and electric motor went on full throttle, opps! 3. Brake as usual - but those small brakes(designed to work in conjunction with regenerating braking) on Prius are quickly overpowered by the powerful Hybrid system, no good! 4. Driver begins to realize the car has "no" brake, bad luck!

Nice "Theory", but I'm affraid that the Pruis brakes are the same if not larger than the Corolla or Camry brakes......

I do also think people are now on the imagination ban wagon.

How can a car that has no intended acceleration suffer from unintended acceleration. Seriously, the Wozniak experience does seem a bit hard to write off as imagination or band wagon behavior. The man needs no money, publicity or this kind of time and energy diversion. He should be competent enough to understand electronic controls.

"We have not come across any case in which we have found a malfunction. But if any additional reports arise, we will conduct testing using all technology at our disposal." So, they need to wait for someone to die before they conduct testing.

Ahahaha. Toyota was always so smug and arrogant about their cars being the best. And now look at them, they are still too smug to admit fault by saying that the problem came from a "non-Toyota" supplier. Press in Japan was saying yesterday that it was due to the pedals not being made in Japan. Guess what? The CTS corp built those pedals to Toyota specs and supply pedals to other car companies who have experienced no problems with their pedals. Also, the Prius is next to be recalled and is 100% made in Japan. Wonder what excuse they will come up with next.

For so many intelligent car enthusiasts on this blog how come no one has considered that maybe Mr. Wozniak is selecting the "Resume" button on his cruise control (which reverts back to the last pre-set cruise control speed) or accidentally increasing the increments of speed (Its +5mph per click on Toyota systems), instead of selecting the "Set" cruise control on switch? Some real seat time and familiarity in vehicles discussed might cure this blogs appetite in the variety of desktop driver comments posted.

Exactly like how I predicted...the Problem is with the Design Specifications...that means it came from the Japanese. The suppliers just build the Accelerator Pedals to their specs, I also suspect that a lot of other Toyota Models are affected and this means a worldwide Recall. If Toyota was smart, they can use this issue to their advantage. Fix the problem first and then..give free extended warranties for the affected vehicles and atractive Trade-In programs for other "so call not affected vehicles"...people always go for good bargains.

I am so tired of people slamming the manufacturers of Toyota parts in the U.S., Toyota gave the specs to CTS as they they do with all manufacturers and they admitted to providing those specs to CTS and they approved the design etc. so its Toyota who's to blame not the parts makers!! Finally there lies and denial for 10 years has caught up to them and its snow-balling, your lies and denial will only work so far before it comes to bite you in the ass! Good luck restoring that credibility for a long time now, why would anyone believe anything they have to say when they always deny there is a problem until proven wrong over and over again. This software thing will also be proven to be a problem which once again big surprise they are denying! GM denied problems for years to and we all know they were days away from non-existence.
