Audi A1 Air Vents Teaser [Video]

In the continued teaser-driven marketing campaign to build hype for the Audi A1, a new video interview has been released giving us another look into the design of the upcoming small car.  The 2m 30s video features A1 interior designer Ivo van Hulten describing his process.

"We first concentrated on this horizontal dash panel, but then we had the idea that it might look good if we made it like an aircraft wing with the engines suspended from it," said van Hulten.  "Of course, we're building a car and not an aeroplane.  So we didn't want to imitate the engines too closely."

Let's hope in building the interior they also didn't want to imitate Mercedes-Benz.  The Audi rival used the exact same design idea when they created the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

"We kept on changing the size and position until we were absolutely satisfied, and the air vents were in the correct place for the driver and passenger," he said.  The vents will always be in the driver's sightline, possibly sticking out a bit from the dashboard to give "an even greater sense of depth."  Customers will be able to order the vents in a variety of colors just like the roof arch, a nice touch.

Different materials will be available for the vents to add a further level of customization.

The Audi A1 will have its online premiere on February 10 followed by a public debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show.

Audi A1: The key is individuality

  • The interior of the A1 offers an extraordinary range of creative options
  • An intricate process: the new design of the air vents in the cockpit

Ingolstadt, February 1, 2010 - When a new car is introduced, everyone naturally wants to know what it looks like. The shape, the proportions, the color - especially when it comes to the exterior. But the interior also offers a lot of exciting details. With the Audi A1, the people who designed the interior concentrated on creating as many customizable elements as possible. One particularly distinctive example is the new design of the air vents in the control panel - which are constantly in the driver's field of vision.

"We imagined the control panel in the cockpit to be like an airplane wing with turbines," said Ivo van Hulten, interior designer of the new Audi A1, as he described the design process. "Naturally, we're building a car and not an airplane, but the first sketches of the air vents were created with this idea in our heads. And even at this early stage we were thinking about colors and materials. Our goal was to allow A1 drivers to be able to design the air vents according to their personal taste."

Detailed sketches are crucial, as the concept must be presented to the design team. Only then can the next steps begin.  Based on the drawings and virtual data, precise models are made out of clay. These often show small details, but they can also represent entire components in the interior or even the car itself.

"We reconstructed the control panel from clay and then fitted an aluminum component in the shape of the air vent into the clay. By repositioning it and modifying the size, we were able to specify the precise position," van Hulten said. "The process is
highly complex, and the A1 includes many such details. We were only satisfied when everything was perfectly harmonized."

Along with the roof arch, which can be ordered in various colors, the interior of the A1 offers an especially wide range of elements whose color and material can be customized according to personal tastes.

Audi is throwing serious cash into this A1 launch. It's a big risk, especially when the car will be a direct competitor to the wildly popular MINI. Personally, I worry that the car will be too cute for males to buy.

Are the Mini and Fiat 500 not "cute?" I believe that the A1 will be much more muscular than either one of them.

I'm sure the air vents of the A1 will be placed with much more care than it is on my MINI. It's pretty ridiculous how the the air vents are placed exactly where my hands are placed on the steering wheel.

Just what we need is another torque steet compact. Just adding more water to the Audi brand. Next they should open a clothing store in the mall? I can't stand Jaguar, but at least they are not watering down their brand.
