VW Group Considering Audi R4 Platform for New Entry Level Porsche - speculation
Audi e-tron Detroit Showcar 11.01.2010

The R8 started an exciting journey for the Audi brand when it launched into a segment its maker had not competed in before. Soon after rumours of a smaller R8, thought to be called the R4, surfaced. A concept e-tron car unveiled at the recent Detroit Auto Show confirmed that indeed an R4 is in the works.

Now Porsche is considering using the R4 platform as a basis for its newest and smallest model line. Speaking to Autocar, VW Group chairman Martin Winterkorn finally admitted to be looking at a car below the Boxster/ Cayman pair.

"The Porsche model range is firmly based on the 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman, and it will stay that way," he was quoted as saying. "We are also investigating opportunities for a smaller sports car and a smaller SUV - but I cannot say more at the moment."

The car dubbed the new 356 would use a mid-engine layout and source power (said to be about 186kW or 250bhp) from a turbocharged boxer engine. It will share its transmission with the R4 but remain very much a Porsche in most other ways.

Although the R4 is expected to go on sale around June 2011, the Porsche model won't be available until at least 2012. Speculated prices stand at the equivalent of £33,000 (US$53,300) in today's money.

lol good catch 'justbored' - either way panamera is selling well. But i have to say an R4 for the Audi line-up would make ALOT of sense. But for Porsche to develop a car to place under the boxster, would it not dilute the value and prestige of the brand? I guess every boxster owner can heart knowing the title of 'poor mans Porsche' will no longer be applicable to their vehicles :P

already the brand is diluted sports cars to all type of luxury cars including the cayenne diesel

stop it already with brand diluting crap. Porsche already had cheaper cars, 914 and 924 ring a bell ? it's not cheap cars that dilute a brand, it's bad cars that do that.

Because they know that with a car like that, they can offer an evora competitor - at a huge price premium, with minimal developement cost- and just think of all the reps who will gladly trade their 335's for a porsche- even if it isn't really. Hense being the only REAL sportscar manufacturer who can genuinely say they mass produce, and they still charge excessively for their cars- that's why they have the financial stability (though recent events do cause me to question their corporate strategies' "cleanliness".

i hate how the vw group has its fingers in so many pies. i would much rather see each marque's distinct personality shine through in its cars rather than having an audi transmission mated to a porsche six cylinder, etc. i just hate the thought of that. break them up!

They have to do this to maintain 'low' (lol, not really low in Germany) prices for their vehicles. Without technology-sharing you would'nt even consider to buy an Audi A3, cause of the higher price they would have to apply.

That is a whole lot of flawed logic. Mercedes offered the C-Coupe, BMW offered the 3.18Ti and the 1-Series without being entangled with fifty other companies. They do this not so they can keep the cost of their cars down, its so they can game the development process and increase profit margins. If they didn't have Porsche, Audi, Lambo, etc. bundled together development costs would be higher, not the final msrp. It's not as if they were about to bring the A3 to market for $50,000 instead of whatever it is now.

We don't need Porsche based on r4 all we need is Audi r4. I like this better then r8 must say. What I would like to see is a boxter mid-engine 300hp awd lite weight r4. That would be sick.

I think that the 2.5 turbocharged engine (~350 bhp) from the TT-RS will be perfect for the R4 :)

I agree with Discover! They should give the TT-RS engine to this car! And quattro 4WD

this is silly. but anyway, VW did say after it took over Porsche they planned to double output, so pretty much, they will be turning out a lot of new models which is unfortunate. Good for the average Jo but kind of ruins exclusivity.

sure Porsches are expensive, but i wouldn't call them exclusive anymore. in the 1980s they competed with Ferraris. now they compete with higher powered BMWs and Mercs and Audis. anyways i'm not sure about this car. the Boxster is a good entry level car for the brand i think. perhaps if the R4 was a replacement for the TT with a mid engined and RWD platform then the whole thing would make sense. this could underpin the Boxster as well. a smaller model would mean competing with cars like the MX-5 and whilst i think the MX-5 is a cool car i think that should be left to the more mainstream manufacturers.

sub39h , the GT2 is faster than the F430 Scuderia , which until the F458 was the fastest Ferrari. Porsche still competes with Ferrari , but they were always more affordable and had cheaper entry level cars , just like Ferrari has Maserati, but on a different price range. anyway , it gets crowded with the TT, Boxster/Cayman and R4 all in about the same performance/price range.

It's always the same with the vw group if one gets something the others have to get it also. BORING

Given a choice, I would rather have an Audi R4 based Porsche than an Audi Q3 or VW Tiguan based Porsche which is really based on a VW Golf

It's kinda low on power, 250 hp isn't quite that much. The 2.5 TT RS engine would be better.

Brand proliferation at work when there exists a mega auto dynasty. These problems had been foreseen, but Ferdinand Piech won't have it any other way. It's the law of profit and loss. So, you all better get used to it. However, I like this junior R8; it's even far more sinister and luxurious with thinner headlamps and sexy tan hide even on the dashboard! I predict a much smoother Porsche design language than this trigonometric rendering here that is uniquely Audi.
