Toyota pedal supplier has fix for recall fiasco

Toyota pedal supplier has fix for recall fiasco
Toyota Etios Concept live at New Delhi Auto Expo 2010 - 05.01.2010

Potential fix in the works

With the gas pedal recall expanding to Europe and China, Toyota is working on ways to solve the problem.

While details are limited, Toyota has come up with two possible repairs that dealers could perform. Spokesman Brian Lyons said the company had discussed the potential fixes with U.S. regulators, but declined to add additional information. He stated "Our desire is to repair as many vehicles as possible as quickly as possible. The ball is in our court."

The supplier behind the pedal fiasco, CTS, is currently building replacement parts after determining condensation was the potential cause for wear to the pedal mechanism. According to the company's Chairman and CEO, Vinod Khilnani, "That, we believe, is the reason for the slow return of the pedal."  He continued, "We have the fix. It's a ... robust pedal, which is meeting the tougher specifications by Toyota. All of our three facilities which supply to Toyota are already producing the new pedal."

Regardless of how this all pans out, the U.S. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee for investigations has called Toyota to testify about the initial floor mat recall and the current gas pedal recall. As the committee's chairman, U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, said "Failure to take every step possible to prevent future deaths or injury is simply unacceptable. Our hearing will press for answers about the source of this accelerator defect and investigate whether adequate measures have been taken.

Are you really that ignorant??? If you wouldn't drive a car from a company that had a recall, then I suggest buying some really good running shoes!

Maybe because people like them. BTW, this is not the first car company to have major recalls, get over it.

im sorry... WHICH car companies filed for bankruptcy protection? WHICH companies are shit? WHICH company's have the worst reliability in the bizz? no matter how many recalls toyota, or any other japanese or european automaker has, AMERICAN cars have the worst reliability to DATE. now THATS ignorant AND true :P honestly... ask anyone, the japanese have the best reliability on the market. ive heard a saying where people go... "no matter how many pieces fall off a japanese vehicle through the years, it will keep running" so stop all this bashing on toyota, cuz they WILL win in the end hahha

...and they couldn't have come up with that fix earlier? Like 3 years earlier? ...on an accelerator pedal? ...for some reason I wouldn't trust that fix!

WHAT IS THE FIX... The Fix puts a Shim behind the pedal..that is all This Shim or Bar increases the Pedal Return Spring rate..that is ALL it does.. That is ALL the FIX is. The Pedal will retract faster/stronger and quicker, but is it a long term, fix?? Time Will Tell...

@nederina - People, give Toyota a break, they are not and will not be the only automakers with defective parts. Actually I think it was a brave and admirable step they took to suspend further sales until they have the issue resolved. Hopefully no further lives will be lost and Toyota can continue as a viable and healthy automaker.

I agree with you LemieT.... Its called responsibility. Toyota takes responsibility for its mistakes and thats what makes it a top quality and reliable company.

I read that they were forced to initiate this recall by the federal goverment. All of a sudden this seems a lot less brave and admirable.

Right on LemieT! Remember what happened to Mitsubishi? They tried covering up their faults instead of informing the customers, it became more embarrassing for them. Though most of the Toyota bashers here think this is bad, some customers even welcome it and can in fact improve the company's image.

You buy Toyota - you RIP. Toyota should be closed forever for killing people. It was their duty to test the cars safety before selling them.

Well I'm sorry, but that comment is just 100% utter crap and rubbish. You can't test millions of products for years before putting the product for sale to the public. Do you really think they don't test their products before selling them?? The pedal flaw is something that has less than 1-in-a-million chance of ever occurring. And the pedal isn't even made by Toyota, but a subcontractor. I remember seeing a documentary about a scandal in the 80's or 90's in the USA, where some car manufacturer had used wrong kind of rims for the tires they fitted to the cars, causing the tires to burst at highway speeds and killing tens of people before anyone did anything. They even tried to blame the tire manufacturer for the whole problem. EDIT: Did some digging: http://tinyurl.com/ytccfs (A Wikipedia article) Ford and Firestone caused about 250 deaths and 3000 injuries by keeping things secret and then blaming each other for the problem, which was, in my opinion, Ford's fault for using way too low pressure for the tires and not changing the design of the affected vehicles. Now don't you think this is a LITTLE bit bigger of a scandal than the Toyota accelerator pedal problem? And they didn't even want to admit they had made a mistake, unlike Toyota did. Shouldn't Ford be closed forever instead of Toyota?? What I'm trying to say here is that everyone makes mistakes sometimes, no matter how big a company it is. We all learn from our mistakes. Making a mistake is humane and natural. The world's biggest car manufacturer shouldn't be closed just because of a few deaths caused by a small defect in their product.

I totally agree with Aleksi... sorry for those who claim that Toyota should be closed forever... that's a childish statement... I was never a fan of Toyota cars but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate their quest for more quality and reliability (see the customers' satisfaction studies in Europe: Lexus and Toyota are on the first two places)... so... my respects... and BTW: Citroen and Peugeot are recalling now cars in Europe for exactly the same problem! Should they be forever closed?

Well at least there's a fix. In mildly related news, I just got a letter from FIAT saying they are recalling my Grande Punto (and others of course) because the 'Upper Steering Shaft Joint Fastening' may not have been put on properly and may cause complete loss of steering control. Ooh er.

Car manufacturers have recalls and that?s normally that. It doesn?t appear in newspaper headlines around the world. But Toyota has! I?m afraid Toyota has done something wrong with their recall policy for this to happen. Instead of being discretely deal with, everyman and his dog now knows about it. Guess what I read today?

I believe this is because Toyota being no.1 manufacturer is not very loved by some important people in the dying american cars industry. That's why this event is such a scandal while about the rest nobody knows anything.

The news is big because it concerns tons of cars (#1 car manufacturer + parts used on most of NA & EU models). However there are few points in suspens: - how comes, given the variety of models, that Toyota hasn't detected it during testing - has this problem killed people (who survived jammed cruise control and who don't understand the concept of NEUTRAL) BTW these issues make me think: would I buy a car whose gearbox' neutral mode is electronically controlled rather than mechanically (e.g. new Jaguar XF)? I think I won't take the risk.

Just sharing my experience: Almost all major auto manufacturer have had to do a major recall at least once during their entire lifecycle....nobodies perfect. I've worked with BMW and Mercedes before: Remember the W211, Mercedes had to do a worldwide recall to replace the Electro Hydraulic Control Unit (the ABS Pump with ESP). This is the Hydraulic Control Unit that controls the vehicles braking and "some of them" had a fatal flaw which caused them to malfunction while braking. Thats why Mercedes reverted back to the conventional Brake pump which uses the vaccuum from the engine on some of their best selling models. But Toyota should not have tried to cover up the actual problem with the Accelerator Pedals by saying that it was caused by the Floormats...which eventually was not the actual cause...that was not very professional of them. But I sure hope they learn from their mistake.

How about crash standards? US companies refuse to mandate roof crash worthiness like their competitors

The problem isn't the supplier. They build parts to a specificication, and then ship the parts to Toyota who is then responsible for retesting the part. ALl companies have recalls and the problem is that this effected 8 models and Toyota took so long to react after the fault was pointed out. If you read the brake article (for the Prius) you can see the "cover up" mentality of the company (all companies). They know there's a problem that they have fixed in production of the cars yet haven't decided what to do for the thousands of cars on the road. That's pure negligence. If you know of a problem, have the fix and still do nothing. That's a corporate mindset problem. They are still great yet boring cars but the company has some problems.
