Toyota to expand pedal recall to Europe - report
2009 Toyota Avensis

No plans to stop production

According to a recent report, Toyota's gas pedal recall will be expanded to Europe.

While details are limited, the Financial Times is reporting a Toyota spokesperson has said "The models and exact number of potentially affected vehicles is under investigation" and there is currently "no need or intention to stop production in Europe." Despite this, Japan's Yomiuri newspaper ran an article which stated the recall will involve 2 million vehicles in Europe.

As you may recall, Toyota has been facing mounting pressure in the United States as cases of unintended acceleration have been linked to 20 deaths and over 2,000 complaints. The company initially responded by issuing a recall of floor mats in nearly 2.5 million vehicles, but this failed to stop the problem. Yesterday, Toyota announced plans to stop North American production of eight models plus the additional of another 1 million vehicles in the U.S. to the recall.

Anyone knows how the Accelerator Pedals get stuck like that? I mean, isn't it suppose to be an Electronic Device that is not supposed to get stuck. If it is not caused by the floormats, then what is causing this problem? I heard it is the supplier of the Accelerator Pedals, does that mean that this problem is Worldwide??

Think it is a "drive by wire"... No mechanical linkage just an electronic one.

I work for Toyota, so maybe I can be of some help. There are 2 recalls coming out, 1 for an issue of floormats possibly covering the gas pedal, and 1 for a possible loss in tension in some gas pedals. The floormat recall will involve modifying the length of the gas pedal, as well as programming the brake pedal as the master pedal (will override the gas pedal input). We have people that come in with non-Toyota floormats in their cars that get all bunched up by the pedals, and this is what Toyota is trying to prevent, stupid aftermarket parts. The second recall has to do with a CTS manufactured pedal (not Toyota's Japanese made Denso pedal, they are fine) loosing tension and being weak to return. There are a couple of fixes rumored, but none are final yet. The actual chances of a pedal getting stuck on a Toyota is less than you getting struck by lightening. Hope this helps clear stuff up!

I have a friend who drives a Toyota Wish (an MPV), is this Model involved in the recall. If I'm not mistaken , usually a manufacturer will try use the same type of components throughout most of the Vehicle Line up to reduce Development and Manufacturing costs.

WHAT!!!!! "20 deaths and over 2,000 Complaints" and TOYOTA is ONLY Acting NOW!!!???.... You deserve everything coming to you Toyota...this is disgraceful. Mitsubishi Motors in Japan had an issue with one of their trucks with axles breaking off causing the death of 5 people and they were sued...it almost sent them broke.

I drove my mom's automatic-transmissioned '85 Taurus with a stuck throttle about 15 years ago. It was disconcerting, but I only needed to shift into neutral to slow or stop the car. Then and to this day, I prefer manual transmissions, manual parking/emergency brakes, manual closing of doors... you get the picture. "I, Robot" starring Will Smith is a not-too-subtle view of a future where people let laziness / districtions / "advancement" / whatever cloud their perception of control leaving electro-nannies to "help" run their lives. I'm a control freak - I'll keep my manual controls, thank you.

I challenge the statement that there is nothing wrong with the Denso pedal. I have a 2008 Highlander that is still in the collision shop due to its front end being demolished 3 weeks ago when it accelerated into the rear of a Jeep Liberty. No damage to Jeep, $15,000 damage to front of Highlander. It has a Denso pedal and yet couldn't be stopped.
