Toyota suspends sale of 8 models due to pedal recalls
2008 - 2010 Toyota Avalon Limited

Toyota has announced that they will halt North American production of eight models, including the top-selling Corolla, until an issue related to the accelerator is resolved.  The company also expanded a recall related to a sticking gas pedal that has been linked to 20 deaths and 2,000 complaints, according to safety experts.

Although the problem has been reported in Europe, the recall and stop-sale order only affects North America.

In addition to the Corolla, the world's largest automaker is freezing sales and assembly of the Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Matrix, RAV4, Sequoia, and Tundra.  56% of Toyota's December U.S. sales came from one of those eight models.  The company is also closing seven factories in North America for at least a week while the situation is investigated internally.

Toyota first linked the sudden acceleration problem to faulty floor mats, which led to the recall of 2.5 million vehicles.  This week's announcement expands the recall to cover 4.8 million vehicles sold since 2005.  The complaints were first reported to Toyota by Tundra owners in 2007.

Despite one Toyota PR flack saying that the problem is rare, Toyota U.S. sales chief Bob Carter said, "This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized."  The uncontrolled acceleration is believed to be caused by a part in the accelerator that swells over time in humid conditions, but until recently the company had disregarded the problem as a "drivability issue unrelated to safety."

"We're making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible," Carter said.

Toyota models recalled include:

  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • some 2007-2010 Camrys
  • 2009-2010 Corolla
  • 2010 Highlander
  • 2009-2010 Matrix
  • 2009-2010 RAV4
  • 2008-2010 Sequoia
  • 2007-2010 Tundra

Installing sticking gas pedals on even their most pedestrian models is a sure-fire and very economical way for Toyota to inject a little driving excitement into their mundane lineup of cars. Just imagine an LFA with a stuck throttle---what an adrenaline rush!

Not just a rush of adrenaline, but also a rush of the V10 noise!!

Wow. I've remembered this to be an issue for over 6 years now with Toyotas. It first became a problem with the Celica, but no one really made it a big deal. Now look what happened. See what you get, when you don't sweat the small stuff. Wow, that is a lot of models to be putting on hold and recalling back Toyota.

@ccrispy, not all of them are ugly, the Avalon in the pic is the best toyota and one of the best saloons in its price segment, looks good from out & inside. Hope they fix those problems quickly and don't make another mistakes

Wow, that is huge. Hopefully they fix it before some one else gets hurt. PS: I knew I had a valid reason never to buy Toyotas.

in Europe Toyotas have a clutch... in US people should know that they can always shift to N... and the car won't accelerate at all.

Its about time to put a leach on this stray animal who claims of top notch quality and reliability and safety and what not. I have always hated toyotas for how they look, feel, and drive (more like an appliance) and this false perception of quality they have created in consumers minds is really difficult to change. I think these series of recalls and stop sales would go a long way in cementing my belief that this organization is based on false quality claims and biased so called independent consumer research groups claims.

Yes it sure is a good thing that Toyota decided to go the extra mile and replace all of the Faulty Denso pedal with the operational cts pedal. You know they really should have waited for a class action lawsuit like Ford did before fixing a known problem. Shame on them for adressing the issue head on instead of hiding it.

I believe Toyota have known about this problem for quite some time - a few years. And they DID try to hide it initially and probably would still be doing so if it wasn't for the death of that CA cop.

you know out of the hundreds of cars I've driven (though not necessarily ones I've owned), I couldn't name not one accelerator pedal from them...!

...and what about Lexus? That Californian cop was killed in a Lexus wasn't he? And I read elsewhere that some woman had "floor mat" problems with her Prius...

It is funny to me to see how blown up this is getting when Detroit can have MUCH more serious issue's that are dragged on and on over a decade (while still selling the vehciles instead of fixing the problem and moving forward), but when a jap manufacture decide to suspend and fix the problem they're lambasted.

The problems have clearly gone out of control. The buy word for reliability stops selling all its best selling cars immediately without even a known fix to the issue? According to the news Toyota is in fact required to stop selling affected cars by U.S. law.

why do most problems only occur in the US? is it because the rest of the world are more intelligent? "oh no, my lexus wont stop accelerating...90 ...100 ...110 ...120 ...**crashed**." the lession here is: #1. USE YOUR FUCKING BRAKE PEDAL #2. THROW THE SHIFTER IN NETRUAL Also, floor mats problem?? You gotta be shitting me.

The end result of obtaining a U.S. driver's license for about $75 and a couple hours of your time (versus a European one that costs what...$1200? and takes weeks, or months to acquire?) is that inevitably a few [million] less than qualified drivers are allowed to freely share the road right alongside the excellent drivers. It's one of the disadvantages of living in a free country, that and easily and inexpensively obtained food which results in the sort of obesity issues that food-starved citizens in other countries don't have to deal with. Also, even the dumbest of idiots knows that driving ability is no more directly attributable to a high IQ than is an ability to tie one's shoes, as Mr. Einstein has so aptly demonstrated. Americans do not hold the exclusive rights to stupidity, as you (and many other Anti-American commenters on this site) have also so aptly demonstrated.

They're in deep s*** now. Lets see how they swindle their way through this one. car-o-bar you are right, Toyota has succesfully created a false sense of quality and reliability around all their line up, when in fact they are no different than all other Japanese manufacturers. Infact, I would vote for Nissan, Honda, Mitsubishi and Mazda anytime against Toyota. Man, their cars are so boring.

Its very funny and not ha ha funny. I broke this story on WCF, a few hours after the death of San Diego police officer and his family died in the now famous lexus. People responded to my post by saying it was fiction or couldnt have happened. This is sad and beyond weird. I work for a major auto rental company and now 30 percent of its fleet is sitting silent on the tarmac, while Toyota, figures out a way to repair all of these cars.I hope Toyota can come back from this, Ford and Firestone did eventually.
