Trivial comment in the face of planetary warming and much higher pollution levels of the V6 (include noise pollution in that equation). Fortunately VW saw sense and canned it.

I'm a big fan of the GTI, but this R model really needs a more agressive look to set it apart.
I was expecting at least some moderate fender-flaring, and wheels that didn't look like cheap cast aluminum jobs.

In the second paragraph?
'and has a 4.5% torque increase to 350 ft-lb.'
should be '350Nm',right?
please check?OK

Not a VW fan but those numbers from a 2L are impressive, specially the torque!

I think so too, but I think it will grow on me by the time it gets here. There's a lot to be said for the improved mileage. (Some guys in VWVortex were confessing 14-16 mpg with the MKV R32. It not the kind of car you're going to want to restrain yourself in order to drive for good mileage. The timing was poor as fuel prices went up the following year.) The lower emissions are also a nice trade off, but I would imagine that even with exhaust tuning it won't come close to sounding like the VR6.

My guess is that it will come mid 2011 as a 2012 model. The R seems to make it here the last year of the Golf series, at least that's how it worked out with the Golf IV and Golf V. Last time you could order one in early 2007 and they were arriving in the summer.

Around 20% more? I'm guessing, have no idea but it makes sense to me, it would then come in just under the S3 (although obviously the S3 has a ton of stuff as extras, while std on the Golf).

Last time it was about $3,500 more than a comparably equipped GTI (i.e., a loaded GTI).

5.5 s in a Gold is pretty impressive. We are talking about Porsche Boxster killer here.
January 27, 2010 3:09 pm
Porsche Boxster killer? Are you on drugs?? Ooooh, it might beat the Boxster 0-60! Wow! Not even, and if it did, go to a track! Try to even keep up! It amazes me how quickly people that know so little will say how a car will be a "Porsche Killer". A Porsche is a true sports car. This is measured by the complete package it delivers. True, not all models are super quick in a straight line. But this isn't a Ford Mustang. The true test of a sports car is at a race track. I've seen done up R32's, STI's come to the track and get absolutely slaughtered by stock Boxsters. I'm not talking a small margin, i'm talking complete embarassment. Porsche is the bar that all cars should only hope to came near. If what I say does not make sense, find a way to drive whatever you think is a good car, then take a Porsche, to a track. And see how they compare. You will be a believer. It just makes sense.

No he's not necessarily wrong at all. This vs a stock Boxster (not the 'S') would be run the Golf R certainly could win. Yes, the Boxster will have supreme handling but is poorer in power in both power (13 horses) and torque (where it nails the Boxster, with 350nm vs only 290nm - a little more than my Golf GTI). The Golf R is also faster to 100 km p/h by 0.2 (manual) - 0.4 secs (DSG). It's a face-off I'd like to see.

STI getting slaughtered by a stock Boxster? Check the driver, mate!
January 28, 2010 12:15 pm
Porsche Boxster and 911 Carrera is not the same thing mate. Golf R is not as bad as you assume

I'll take a 2nd hand S3 for half the price and go on 4 huge holidays with money saved, thanks.
January 28, 2010 12:03 pm
Uh, yeah. I don't think so. Plain jane Boxster with PDK does 0-60 in 5.1secs. Beat it? No. And an STI aroud the track? Please. Driver has nothing to do with it. It's a nose heavy car that pushes in the corners, a Boxster is a perfectly balanced sports car with superior brakes, handling, everything. The A3 is a super cool car, for what it is, a HAWT hatch. The hottest that i can think of. But if you will settle for it and a holiday, all the power to ya. The boxster will still spank it all day long at the track. Do suspension mods, engine, all the rest, maybe you might stand a chance. But where are your savings now?

Fusion01....get a grip buddy. If you want to get all self-righteous go stand on a soapbox somewhere else, or better yet target some of the real sources of global warming instead of taking potshots at VR6 engines. The difference in emissions you are so confident of is either negligible or non-existent, as the 3.2l VR6 can be fitted with direct injection and probably tweaked to be just as clean as or cleaner than a turbo engine. And noise pollution....please....are you a car enthusiast or not?
