A futuristic-looking sketch depicting what Volvo described as "a future Volvo electric car?" surfaced during a presentation at an event by EnerDel, lithium-ion battery suppliers for the electric Volvo C30. The sketch was signed by one Stefan Jansson and is quite bold, with a menacing front end and oversized wheels.

Dan Johnston, a spokesman for Volvo played down suggestions of anything resembling the final electric car design, saying the sketch is just that, a sketch.

"It's just one of the designer guys in Sweden playing around," Johnston told Insideline. "We won't have an electric vehicle that looks like an electric vehicle. It won't be like a Prius. You'll see the continuation of [our] design language on the C30."

However, seeing as though the Swedes were actually pressured by an excited public into building the C30 from that radical Volvo Safety Concept Car of 2000, there is no saying this won't happen again with this sketch.

Oh no, you could put any badge on that sketch. There's nothing distinctive about it.

Is there an unwritten rule somewhere that all Electric Cars are suppose to be an ugly hatchback??? Does Volvo think that a hatchback would makle their cars look sportier??? I dont think so... I personally hate hatcbacks... Why not a good old sleek and elegant Sedan?

Did you read anything written in the article? It says that this sketch is just one of the Volvo designers playing around.

Dan Johnston says "We won't have an electric vehicle that looks like an electric vehicle. It won't be like a Prius. You'll see the continuation of [our] design language on the C30."

Looks like something that would've come out of Japan.

I'll take their word that it's just a sketch - and as a graphic and product designer, I know I go through plenty of them before I reach my end product - so I wouldn't assume anything remotely like this drawing to be produced by Volvo. It simply has none of their brand design language: the angularity, the broad, hard shoulder line, the delicate greenhouse. The new S60 and XC60 have taken small evolutionary steps away from that direction, but this sketch looks more like a Mazda out-take than anything from Sweden.

Just a drawing. I have lots of similiar doodling from past designers. Now if you see this in clay or concept car, then all bets are off. In reality we are too small to make stand alone EV's. Our engine compartment and engine cradle system can be fitted with many different power systems w/o changing sheet metal. A nice sedan would be sweet, like our new S60. What you'll see is as mentioned, our existing design language, updated as the years go by, with many different power systems. dan Volvo www.thecarthatstopsitself.com
