WCF Review: The BMW 530d Gran Turismo

WCF Review: The BMW 530d Gran Turismo
BMW 530d GT / Copyright: Alex Ricciuti / WCF

The 530d Gran Turismo tested here came in white, with a panoramic glass roof and the diesel power plant to properly move this luxury vessel. A 'bulky' cruise ship, perhaps, but it certainly looks a lot less beastly than its sibling the X6. And its real aim is definitely to wait until you are comfortably seated inside of it to begin to seduce you.

Comfort is key. With its moveable rear seats, the GT can offer more rear leg room than a standard 7-Series. But one can also opt to push them forward for more luggage room. And a road trip is what this car is made for with a rear hatch that opens fully to reveal loads of cargo space. The cargo compartment can also be accessed by way of the integrated trunk door for one's more daily needs.

As the 5-Series GT is intended as a niche model, really more an extension of the 5-Series range than a stand-alone model, it only comes with 3 engine options - a 535i, 550i and this 245 hp 530d. And driving a BMW diesel these days one can easily forget (What, again?) are the advantages of a petrol/gasoline engine. Coupled to BMW's new 8-speed transmission, you're always in the right gear to maximize fuel economy but still left with loads of torque to call upon when needed or desired (540 Nm).

The GT drives, very likely, just the way BMW intended it to. It funnels through corners as a solid, singular entity, never a part of it wavering or slipping away from the rest. This goes for all 3 of the available suspension settings that allow for drivers to select between a stiffer, sportier ride or something a little jollier.

Other highlights include the delicate dashboard lighting that makes driving at night pleasantly atmospheric and very easy-going on the eyes, with the dials in the cockpit lighting up in a crisp, sharp definition.

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo is, in the strictest sense, the kind of car it was wants to be - a spacious tourer with 7-Series comfort and performance. It represents what BMW has become over the last few years. An automaker that creates niche models with bold designs but that beneath it all, are always Fahrvergnugen (driving pleasure) machines.

Price as tested 108,000 Sfr. (73,275 euros). Options included leather interior in Dakota black, panormaic glass roof, and 19-inch wheels.

I don't like the new 5 series at all. I saw quite few on road and I wasn't sure which model I was looking at: 5 or 7. Yeah yeah (all) Audies have the same style as well but atleast you can point out the difference easily between A4, A5, A6 etc.

Wow, a WCF review. You haven't done one of these for a long time. No offence, but why review such an ugly car? o.0

It's a great reviewable car because it's such a controversial car. If you read the article you'll notice it's actually a pretty solid car.

Okay, honestly not trying to be a sh-t disturber but want to pose a serious question to those drunk on BMW. Please explain to me the appeal and the 'raison d'etre' of this car. I can't see why someone would buy it, even for practical reasons, as there are more practical alternatives in the market place. It would seem to me most sales will be generated merely as a result of the badge on the bonnet. I'm ready to be enlightened.

Interior has sooo many details from the 7s, actually it looks 90% like the 7s but with less number of bottuns, this is why I hat BMW, the 7s should have its individual design for the interior not sharing it with this ugly poinless over priced 5GT! Like the S and A8 both have their own design for the interiors thats why their interiors are special from their other range of cars

If you think hard, you'll remember ALL 5s sharing 7 interior bits. Remember how the E34 interior was literally a smaller E32? Or how about the E38 sharing most its bits with the E39? Then, the introduction of the "furniture" interiors on the E65/66 and translated lightly into the E60. BMW always shares interior suppliers between lines. Thats how you make a profit...

What a boring review. A review is a reasonable addition but you're not telling us anything that fans of WCF don't already know from a thousand other sources. What your review needs a is an extremely subjective viewpoint. Do like the bloody thing? BTW, I saw a 55Oi GT in the flesh (silver over black) and it looks fine. Not beautiful but not bad either. As a former owner of a 1999 540i Sportline, I wouldn't kick it out of my garage.

Agreed. Regurgitating marketing guff is not a review. A review requires subjective insight. I've read articles with more substance in News Corp papers.

You know there are people who say they are not "photogenic" and dont appear good in photos. This is the case with this car. Look hideous and disproportionate in pictures but in fact is very stunning in real life. Had a test drive of the 530d, and I must say I was very impressed. Same basic chasis and interior of a 7 series, but with a much more practicar approach to it. In many ways this car looks much more muscular and interesting than the 7 series. So unless you've seen it in real life, dont hate cause its really a treat.

For those of you that think the design is useless try to imagine being tired of driving an SUV you'd like to get back into a car but you want to keep the SUV functionality. A wagon could work but the design of a wagon looks too soccer mom to you. Thats were these crossovers come in. I've test driven the 550i GT its awesome inside and out. Give it a chance go look at one maybe even drive it.

So this 'innovative' BMW is actually just like any other lift-back hatchback car, like we've had for decades now. The only thing I can see thats any different is the double hinged boot so you can open it like a sedan or a lift-back, much like the Skoda Superb has done for a while now. I just don't see what is new about this car, yet BMW tries to paint it as some niche creating masterpiece of innovative design. Which it just isn't.

genie.....I'll admit its not completely a new idea but it is for BMW's lineup and the luxury car market. The overall shape combined with its key standard features is new.
