BMW X5 M and X6 M Winter Driver Training - Extreme Drifting [Video]

Subtle Audi taunts?

Two new videos from BMW give us an idea of what the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are capable of doing in the snow.  The 3m 30s of footage, shot in "perfect snow conditions," is meant to teach drivers of the sport activity vehicles how to drive on the snow and ice.

The first video, titled "Extreme Drifting," is hosted by Walter Haupt, an instructer with M Driver Training.  Although the video is more like a piece of eye candy, showing the two SAVs frolicking about, Haupt does talk about how you can regain control in a drift.

"Hill Riding," is the title of the second video, hosted by instructor Gunter Schillinger.  The lesson focuses on driving up and down snowy hills, with demonstrations at the Alta Badia ski resort in the Italian Alps.  The "hill" used is a downhill course during the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup.

This could be a thinly-veiled jab at BMW-rival Audi, an official sponsor of the event.

The vehicles appear to jump up the hill at quick speeds thanks to the M Drive Manager.  Downhill, its all about confidently managing the steering wheel.  In the end, the BMWs casually pull up to the ski lift entranceway, with a gate adorned with a photo of the Audi Q5.

BMW's X5 M and X6 M use the new 4.4-liter V8 M TwinPower engine delivering 555 horsepower and up to 680 Nm of torque.  It sprints from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds.  Both vehicles were introduced at last year's New York Auto Show.

Nice clip to advertise winter driver training, but the V8 sounds much worse than I thought and a rare sight that a BMW doesn't get stuck under difficult condition (all because of snow tires)

Dude, there's a huge difference when hearing this in person and on computer speakers. But BMW sure does know how to make a short video deliver.

It's funny they should call this "EXTREME DRIFTING". I drift my lancer like this whenever there is a snowstorm.

I used to drive a Cadillac. Anyway there is nothing wrong with driving a "RARE" rhd lancer evo 1. Especially since I'm still a skirt chasing university student.

wake up BMW Marketing. if this video were posted a couple months ago, I am sure your sales figure would have been more impressive. it's end of JANUARY already and many cities are looking at spring coming in a couple of months. instead, try planning to sell your Z4 xyzsexdrive35ttwhatever soon.

@xenicide, because this is poor marketing. do you try to sell a convertible in the fall? or because there is no sun after september? geez.

I'm not a fan of the X5 M, but some of the normal ones, with the right options are pretty hot.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I quite fancy the X5, while the X6 isn't really my cup of tea

Is it just me or did the spend essentially the entire clip spinning in circles? Also after seeing the absolute failure of the X6 to make it up a grassy bank on top gear, I wouldn't dare take one anywhere that requires 4x4 machinery. Give me the black series unimog!

top gear is for entertainment. Clarkson had summer tires on that X6. A camry with snow tires would have climbed that hill...

Top Gear isn't exactly the most accurate tv series in the world, and that's partly why we love it so much and I'm sure BMW put both the X5 and X6 to rigurous tests in order to allow its drivers to attempt even the slightest bit of offroading :)

Nothing remotely impressive in video 1. So they can do doughnuts in the snow. Yay. Pretty awesome hill climb though X5M is all over the place. Either the X6 handles better or has a better driver.
