BMW ActiveHybrid 5 Set to Debut in Geneva
2011 BMW 5-series F10 Sedan

BMW has confirmed that an Activehybrid concept model of the new 2011 5 Series (F10) will appear at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. European sales are expected to begin shortly thereafter but there is currently no confirmation as to whether the US, a hybrid hotbed, is on the list or not.

Another version not likely to reach US dealerships is the Touring (station wagon). Figures show that fewer than 1,000 previous E60 generation 5 Series Touring models were sold in America last year.

"I don't think we will sell it because in the past, station wagons have not sold well," said Klaus Draeger, BMW AG board member for Research and Development. The addition of the quirky 5 Series Gran Turismo has also thrown a spanner in the works for a buying public that is exposed to an ever-increasing choice of models.

Initially only the 535i and 550i will be available at launch in June. The former has a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine worth 225kW (306hp) and 400Nm. The 550i boasts a twin turbo V8 pushing out 300kW (408hp) and 600Nm of torque.

Price increases over the old car are probably inevitable but if they do occur they will be kept to a miminum because of the hard-hit market, according to a BMW executive.

This car is very clean, hybrid will work if they use the 3.0 engine and gain a considerable amount of MPG.

My favorite car, "The King" is back! Stately and majestic.

Yep, very old king, if not just dead one. Based not on art of design as suitable for material culture, this car is born from metaphors of textual disorder and memories of illiterate imagination.

Why are "station wagons" unpopular in America? They are highly practical and often look as good as and sometimes better than the saloon. And in the 5's case certainly better looking than the 5 GT (which isn't saying much...). But surely the X5 will still win out in end for that customer. I still don't see the point of the 5 GT. I really don't think there will be any new sales or new customers for this car.

me neither, but BMW execs must know something that we don't @joshq_5 a 5 GT M might be the reason why they denied the possibility of a M5 wagon, although I hope not

They're no longer popular here simply because of the image they carry as a family car. And besides, many people who'd otherwise be driving these 'station wagons' drive minivans and SUVs now.

Any info on the Hybrid? I would assume it would be another pointless Parrallel Hybrid configuration. Why dont they make a Serial Hybrid with a Flex Fuel Micro Turbine Generator??? They are much more fuel efficent, environmentally friendly and will serve as a platform for future Hydrogen Fuel Cell Models. Wake up BMW.

Not to beat a dead horse but, Wow! this looks like a 3er. I feel like I've seen this car before and it hasn't even been released. Part of the problem with sales of wagons in NA is that BMW doesn't manufacture and import one that is truly beautiful and compelling. They tend to appear as after-thoughts of the sedan design.

All wagon (estate) sales are poor in the US from all manufacturers. If a wagon is needed, it's usually due to family needs and mothers hate wagons due to the "Mommy" stigma. They'd rather have an SUV since it seems more fun and doesn't remind them of the wood panel wagons from their childhood. I wanted an 54Oi wagon but the wife wanted an X5. At least she was willing to go with BMW and we bought a manufacturer's rep mobile.
