 All-New 2011 Mazda5 Revealed - Public Debut in Geneva
2011 Mazda5 - 20.01.2010

New engine, improved styling

Mazda has released first information about the third generation 2011 Mazda5, ahead of it's unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show.

Set to go on sale in Europe this fall, the redesigned Mazda5 features Mazda's "Nagare Flow" design language, dual-sliding rear doors, and seating for up to seven. According to Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Program Manager, "Our main goal with the all-new Mazda5, was to develop a new C-MAV (C-segment Multi Activity Vehicle) that combines the superior environmental performance these times demand with a new expression in stylish design."

Under the hood, power comes from a new 2.0-liter DISI1 petrol engine that has been outfitted with an engine start/start system (called i-stop). While official fuel economy ratings weren't released, Mazda says the engine will make the Mazda5 "one of the most frugal and clean C-MAVs on the market, achieving approximately 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 2.0-liter petrol it replaces." If that doesn't float your boat, the company will also offer a 1.8-liter petrol engine. It will likely produce 115 hp (85 kW) and 165 Nm of torque.

World Premiere of all-new Mazda5 at Geneva

Leverkusen, 20 January 2010. A highlight at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March will be the world premiere of the all-new Mazda5, which is especially good at meeting the needs of European families with active lifestyles.

"Our main goal with the all-new Mazda5," says Hideki Matsuoka, Mazda5 Programme Manager, "was to develop a new C-MAV that combines the superior environmental performance these times demand with a new expression in stylish design."

The all-new model further evolves Mazda5's acclaimed functionality - with double-sliding rear doors and 7-seat Karakuri flexibility - and dresses it in a suit of clothes that is as eye-catching as it is unique to the segment. This design, which also uses elements of Mazda's "Nagare Flow" design language, is highly functional and contributes to fuel efficiency by having a particularly low drag coefficient, and optimal lift and air-swirl characteristics.

The all-new Mazda5 is fitted with a newly-developed 2.0-litre DISI1 petrol engine equipped with i-stop, and a six-speed manual transmission with gear ratios specific to this version. This new direct-injection petrol offers linear and smooth performance characteristics and is fun to drive. It is also one of the most frugal and clean C-MAVs on the market, achieving approximately 15 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the 2.0-litre petrol it replaces. The gasoline line-up features a 1.8-litre engine with a six-speed manual transmission as well.

The all-new Mazda5 will go on sale in Europe this fall. It is one of three premieres that will be unveiled at Mazda's press conference to be held at the Mazda stand in Hall 5, on 2 March.

Ooh er, I'm not sure "Improved Styling" is entirely accurate. 'Nagare' works on sportier cars, but here it's a little too... much. If you've seen a new Mazda3 in person, make that big gawping face about 20-30% bigger to get the new Mazda5. And at the back it looks like a Ssangyong Rodius. The wispy lines down the sides are a nice unique touch though.

yeah, the side lines are nice but agree about the back lights. Overall its OK, but a mixture of pretty and ugly.

i agree with you boys about the tail lights, but this car drives really well. love that nifty electric slide doors, handy when it comes to child safety or security.

You tested it?!?! I was thinking about the Ssangyong Rodius to, when I saw the rearview for the first time. But this mpv is much more elegant. The whole style of the Mazda 5 is identifiable and the sidelines as a result of the designtheme are beautyful and fit the car alot. Interesting trend: Peugeot will minimize their grill design, Mazda will push them up. Nice, but a little bit to plump for a sportive mpv. The sliding doors are great! 115 hp are ok, but 1.8 litre? Not better then a 15 years old car :/

It is not entirely all-new, I mean look at the shape architecture, it is still based on the same outgoing car. That car drives really well and very tail happy!

1. too many buttons and knobs inside... and pity about the pointy dashboard hood. 2. back looks like a SY. 3. the big mouth is really overdone... otherwise the electric sliding doors are really practical.

Uhhh, the rear is wrong and what are with the wrinkles on the side?

Search 'Mazda Nagare design' and the wrinkles will make more sense.

I'm not a fan of this "design language"... but hey, this will probably be a top-seller for Mazda and make them tons of money, so you cannot fault their business strategy

Front looks like a Mazda 3's, so that is OK I guess, Side looks very cool with those lines, but wtf happened at the rear?!

i personally don?t like those side lines, they are just an addition to a design that could work equally without them. what i mean is that in mazda?s last prototypes we could see cars with homogeneous lines talking the same all around the bodyshell, while here we just see a quite conventional design retouched with hints of this nagare spirit, if i may call it like that. i hope to see better things coming from mazda, they use to release very stylish cars (another personal opinion)

Not too crazy about the sidelines and the rear... but i do like the interior, kinda OPEL-ish.

Mazdas are losing their sport-europen design for a weird-japanese design. :P

AHH, the Nagare Flow was designed by Anglo Saxons you know blue eyes...no Japanese.. The Designer of the current 3 is European (Dutch I think) and has now gone to Renault as their CD.

AT least Mazda do something different and offer "enthusiast" cars at a great price, they are to be commended. Or would you rather drive an appliance?...Camry, Accord, GM.

am i the only one seeing this? the lines are ugly! i dont know what mazda was thinking! i do agree the tail lights look so cheesy! but honestly the curve lines on the side is driving me crazy! they should have just stuck with the one line coming from the tail lights! if i ever do buy this new model first thing i would do is add bondo to that curve line and cover it up! hehehe LOL
