Like a fish out of water

Toyota has unveiled the Prius G Sports Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Looking like a fish out of water, the concept features numerous styling tweaks to improve its aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. Modifications include new bumpers, revised side skirts, LED daytime running lights, a dual exhaust system, and 18-inch alloy wheels outfitted with high performance tires.

Inside, the car boasts a revised steering wheel, RECARO sport seats, aluminum pedals, black piano trim, and a new information display.

Like the standard Prius, power comes from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 73 kW (99 PS) and 142 Nm of torque.

While the engine is unchanged, Toyota made some minor modifications to improve the car's dynamics. They installed chassis reinforcements and a high performance ADVICS braking system.

Tokyo-TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces it plans to begin a gradual rollout in Japan in mid-2010 of its newly developed "G Sports"1 (G's) sports conversion car2 series. The series, to be sold through Toyota-brand dealers, is meant to offer to a wider range of people the "automotive seasoning" that TMC has pursued through its GAZOO Racing3 activities.

The G's series is designed for customers who strongly desire to own a unique vehicle, offering them a personalized interior and exterior design along with sports-driving performance. TMC has directly designed this sports conversion series, instead of the conventional approach of outsourcing development to a customization firm.

The base vehicle of the G's series is equipped with internal and external components that include sports suspension, aerodynamic parts and racing-style seats. A special focus has been placed on "driving seasoning" to make handling fun, through fine-tuning carried out by the GAZOO Racing test drivers who drove the Lexus "LF-A" in the 24 Hours Nürburgring race in Germany and developed the "iQ"-based "GAZOO Racing tuned by MN4" (GRMN).

This makes the 1st gen Prius look totally conservative, even handsome by comparison. This looks like a prop car left over from a bad, low budget sci-fi movie...a SyFy original movie of the week or something.

LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!11 It's completely beyond me how the project leader assembling that engineering team got any support whatsoever. "What we want to do is make a Prius sports car... but we're not going to tune the engine." Talk about a Herculean challenge! Needless to say, they failed. Hard. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (or w/e they're calling it these days) makes more sense than this.

I dont know - I think it might have had alot more to do with funding. To change engine/ hybrid drive train would mean R&d+ changes to factories etc... Instead its alot easier to change a few interior pieces, add some nice wheels, and a few body modifications. Either way sounds much like a accounting/merketing decision. Cause if you think about it - A sporty Environmentalist would not want to drive a car that pollutes more or gives lower mpg. So really its made sense to only make modifications on the handling/braking/drag tbh.

A standard BMW 320d or a humble VW TDI would eat and humiliate this car easily.

Is this some kind of joke! First we get sports/super cars talking of going hybrid (Nissan GTR possibly Ferrari 599). Now we get hybrid cars trying to go for sporty? Who is in control of this industry!!!

It isn't only for Toyota. It is only done to hybrids (They did an ugly bodykit for the Insight too.) Watch when G-sports modify the CR-Z in the future.

No no no, this is all wrong! Prius is a synonym for "Not at all sporty", stop screwing around Toyota! Give us another Supra or something, not this rubbish! In addition, covered up wheel arches always look bad in my opinion.

don't worry, it's just a concept, I highly doubt they will put this for sale
