Audi A1 Teases LED Daytime Running Lights [Video]

Inching closer to production

In one of the least surprising announcements of all time, Audi has confirmed the A1 will feature LED daytime driving lights.

Meant to resemble the "wings of an eagle," Audi says the lights "display decisiveness and concentration, similar to an athlete poised in the starting blocks - with a sparkle in the eyes." While that's probably taking it a bit too far, the lights looked decent enough when they were caught during a photo shoot with Justin Timberlake.

As you may recall, the A1 is a premium subcompact which is seen as a rival to the Mini Cooper. It is expected to go on sale later this year, with a targeted output of 80,000 units.

Engine options will likely include a 1.2-liter with 86 hp, a 1.4-liter with 122 hp, and a turbocharged 1.4-liter with 170 hp. On the diesel side, the A1 is expected to feature a 1.6-liter with 90 hp and 2.0-liter with 143 hp.

This teaser is only the second in a series of many more, leading up to the media release in February, followed by the public debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

Audi A1: We light up the dark

  • Sporty: The Audi A1 is ready to go
  • Headlights with LED daytime running lights give the car character
  • The wings of an eagle inspired the design of the lights

Ingolstadt, January 15, 2010 - Can a car look concentrated and decisive? Yes, it can. The headlights play an important role in this; they are the eyes of a car, so to speak. People convey emotions such as happiness, joy and sadness with their eyes. On a car, the lights influence the character of the front end - and this also applies to the Audi A1, which in future will be the smallest member of the Audi family.

The innovative LED lighting technology provides the designer with completely new levels of freedom. And on the A1, the headlights display decisiveness and concentration, similar to an athlete poised in the starting blocks - with a sparkle in the eyes.

"On the A1, the front gets its character from a completely new form of LED daytime running lights. We have given our newcomer the sportiness of the R8 and the elegance of the A8," says André Georgi, light designer at Audi. "The new LED technology with fiber optics enables us to draw extremely precise, continuous lines. In this way complex graphics are created in the interplay between the daytime running lights, the turn signals and the dipped headlights."

The form of the daytime running light, also known as the "wing", was inspired by the lightness of an eagle's wing on the A1. The dipped headlight is incorporated into this graphic element. The turn signal is located a little way below the "wing" in order to ensure that it is easily visible.

Audi plays a leading role in the automotive industry with regard to the development of LED light systems. All models can be ordered with LED daytime running lights; the Audi R8 and the new A8 can in fact be ordered with full LED headlights. The daytime running lights have become a striking hallmark of the Audi family. The technology is very efficient, has impressively high light intensity with a pleasant "color temperature" and an almost unlimited lifespan.

Yeh I realise that, so just the headlights mean it is sporty like an R8 and elegant like the A8? Why not make it electric using some eTron headlights, and an SUV using Q7 headlights? Marketing B.S.

So this is the over-payed lunatic responsible for those hideous new A8 lights!? I guess this teaser speaks loads about Audi's main image asset: LED running lights! Seems to be the best thing they could come up with and of course they need to make this look truly special and upscale, the A1 is going against the Mini, which has the name, the technology, and the style. The new A1: "chunky Polo with funky lights!"

LED is garbage and makes cars look cheap in USA now every second civic has it I even saw it on Dodge Truck lol. LED is something cheap that anyone can buy for their cars so why use it on expensive cars

They are trying to surprise us who have loads of LED-lamps at homes. Market is filled by them, made in technologically not very developed countries. Audi, and car industry in general, is amazingly isolated form of existence even for that planet. It looks like over-cooked spaghetti is glowing. Try Italian car design instead Italian cuisine .

When mentioning the 'eye' I recoiled in horror thinking they might go thr route of the 1 series BMW's, that's an eye indeed and looks both creepy and very wierd. Don't know why all the bashing, I reckon it's great Audi attach so much value to all the elements that make a car (in this case the A1) something different. The lights will be distinctive. Sure, you could fit some junk off the shelf as an aftermarket add, but doubtful you'll end up with something like these.

In my understanding LED's are the lighting of the future. All of our homes will one day be replaced with them instead of the CFL's. They last longer than anything else, often for the life of the car itself, so no replacement. Use less energy and so more efficient. Instant on vs a slight fade up on halogens. But then all this most probably know anyway.

Hmm seems like there is a misunderstanding about LED lights on cars..Yes they are more efficient, but not as efficient as one may think over a halogen or xenon bulb. They are not like your normal LED on a home appliance. These are high power LEDs that are made up of rare materials just like a bulb, take a decent amount of power and create a large amount of heat. At the end of the day, on a non electric car they are relatively pointless, for one they are not brighter than Halogen or Xenon, secondly they will not outlast the car without needing to be changed, and at that time be ready to fork out a substantial sum. On another note back to the article, by the looks of it, its not using individual LEDs to create that line, looks more like a fibre optic wire...Could be wrong though cant really tell in the video.

I noticed that the daytime LED stayed on when the indicator light came on, something the current A3/4/5 and R8 don't do (the LED goes off on the side where the turn signal is on - which looks weird ... maybe they fixed that on the A1). But I agree that there was a lot of baloney in the video, all that talk about the "aircraft winglet" design and "eagles spreading their wings" ... somehow this has to do with its so-called "efficiency factor"??
