Tata has announced plans to debut the Nano in the United States for the first time.

Hoping to capitalize on the publicity surrounding the North American International Auto Show, the Nano will be shown at the Detroit Science Center on Thursday.

The company has previously said the Nano will be launched in the U.S. by 2011. Nonetheles, the model on display in Detroit is an Indian specification unit borrowed from Tata Technologies' Center for Advanced Engineering and Design in Pune, India.

Ratan Tata has previously stated, "It (the Nano) will need to meet all emission and crash standards and so we hope in the next two years we will be offering such a vehicle in the United States."

As you may recall, the Nano is priced from $2,200 in India. It features a two-cylinder 624cc petrol engine, with 33 horsepower, that averages 65 miles per gallon.

Journalists will be able to sit in the car, examine the engine and other features. No driving is available.

WHO: Patrick McGoldrick, Tata Technologies' CEO and Managing Director, Warren Harris, Tata Technologies' President and COO, T Umamaheshwaran, Tata Motors' Chief Technology Officer and David Good, Tata's Chief US Representative will give remarks. Design experts from Tata Technologies will showcase the Nano's innovative engineering and design features and answer questions.

MORE: Conceived by Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata group, the Tata Nano is intended as an all-weather form of personal transportation that provides a safer and cleaner alternative to the two-wheeler scooters that are pervasive in India. Unveiled last year in India by Tata Motors, India's largest automobile manufacturer, the Tata Nano is targeted to families who had not previously been able to afford a car. Billed as "the people's car," the base model starts at $2,200 in India and can accommodate up to five adults.

Tata Technologies contributed to 18 patents on the Nano and was involved from concept to launch, including work on the concept, advanced engineering, body-in-white, interior, exterior and manufacturing processes. The model to be on display in Detroit is an Indian specification model on loan from Tata Technologies' Center for Advanced Engineering and Design in Pune, India.

I hope Tata has the economies of scale to keep this car cheap even with all the shipping and tariff costs of importing it to the Americas. If they do, I think they will do VERY well with the proper marketing. The ultimate urban vehicle in my opinion. Also, I think companies will be all over it for their fleets. I would definitely be tempted to buy one.

i'm sorry but i don't share your enthusiasm for this car. i understand the whole sub compact urban thing but this car doesn't fit the bill in my eyes. in fact i would be absolutely embarassed to be even caught in one. maybe my underlining hatred of this car blinds me to its potential successes.

If one is only concerned about getting from A to B, there is no reason to be "embarrassed" about being in this car. I'd rather drive this than MANY other vehicles on the market right now. I'd rather be seen driving this than a Prius and most other hybrids that's for sure. All it shows is that the driver cares about their hard earned dollar, and wants to get where they're going. Of course this would be a second car for most, and I just don't see how anyone can't see that it just makes sense!

As your screen name suggests, Need4Speed, I do not think you are fit for this car. Your personality can be defined in a few words, snobby, pretentious, could care less, spend more than you earn, live life as it comes, have fun.... not that there is anything wrong with that... your are who you are.

I would love to have on on the side for running errands, taking my dog for a ride and doing grocery shopping. I am certainly not going to take my family in it on a vacation trip that involves highway. It would be good short (20-30 min) commuter car as well. Much cheaper and efficient that the pretentious Prius, much smaller carbon footprint that a Prius or for than no so SmartForTwo, and looks good too.

Marketing a cheap ($2000) car in the USA may be a good idea. It may cause other established manufacturers to compete. That'll be good for the consumer, though you don't have to like it, it's good it's there. You?ll note that the price of PCs have been coming down but cars haven?t. The fact that Tata can build this and others can?t? ...Or won?t?

It could probably catch on in urban areas. Although, knowing myself I'd probably take the bus as opposed to owning one. My friends would never let me live down driving a Tata nano.

Pass US crash standards and keep that low price? doubt it, great in concept, on reality, it's just a rolling coffin, get T-boned by your regular soccer mom, even in a small suv and speed limit and see what happens...

the problem seems to lie with the fact that there are so many huge cars in america that this could be considered dangerous... its like if everyone else has a gun you have to aswell, if no-one else does you dont need one. So I can see it being a success in Europe and Asia but the US? I doubt it.

this car is 'only' meant for urban driving, not on the freeways/highways!! but if u ever got T-boned from any car other...chances r that u won't survive. so, IMHO, i would rather get an older Civic to run errands.......

i think most people would rather buy a second-hand car than this. it's a great alternative for a smart (which are quite expensive for something that small)
