it's about time bmw brought back the 6-cylinder 7 to north america. 315hp is more than enough power to move this car. not that long ago, a v12 750il only made 322hp. now if only merc would do the same with their s-class. also, i wish they would offer an s450 long-wheelbase in canada though.

Meh, it's just a larger version of 3 series and it does not look good on roads at all. Sorry.

That's just your opinion. Fact is, there are numerous people that buy the 7 series that don't really care about the number of horses under the hood. Then this car would be just right. It being almost $13k less than the 750 opens it up to more people.

If you wan?t to talk about cars that look alike, so let?s talk about Audi! The A4, A6 and A8 all look almost identical! The BMW 7 it?s very different than the 3 series or than the 5....And the new 7 it?s awsome!

Apart from bragging rights about a new powerplant the real goal is to expand sales via lower price point. Personally I think this car is a failure. A failure to excite or inspire and it doesn't further the brand. On the rare occassion I see one, I don't give it a second look. And the reality is the 3, 5 & 7 in side profile and front profile really don't look that different from one another. But you can also argue that brings a degree of brand identity to the road, and for a brand that can be good. Audi is a good case in point as consumers seem to have definitely responded to their design language by opening their wallets.

About your comment on the price I respectfully disagree. Most of the people who buy this car aren't really looking for performance, so the V6 is plenty powerful. 6s 0-60 is perfectly respectable for this segment. The fact that the 740 is about 12g less than the 750 makes a huge difference, and therefore I think this is a successful idea. I think it does further the brand in terms of market presence if you ask me. But if you're looking for inspiration, look to the letter M. That's where the soul of BMW is.

The S-Class is a larger version of the C, the A8 is a larger version of the A4, the LS is a larger version of the IS, the RRVogue is a larger version of the sport, the X5 is a larger version of the X3, the Panamera is a larger version of the 911, the Rapide is a larger version of the DB9, the Clubman is a larger version of the Cooper, the Q7 is a larger version of the Q5...are we noticing a pattern? Different models are both obviously larger versions of the other cars on the line and not at all alike. What's your point? You can say that about almost every car on the road that's made by a company that produces more than one model.

Actually, the new seven looks a lot more imposing and menacing in real life than it does in pictures! I actually am pleased to see that, I haven't experienced this feeling since the E60 came out, with Bangle bragging left an right on how awesome the car was. I hated it when I saw the first official photos and videos, but it blew me away when I first saw it for real! Same thing happened with the 7 series. The front looks like a bird of pray swooping down, ready to eat you, that's what you see in the rear-view mirror. The rear is a bit strange, ugly even, but that's what you see after this thing passes you, it's a subtle fu from the driver.

Hey I was just stating my opinion, it's free to do so right. You don't have to agree. I still stand by what I said, this car does not look good on road and I have seen plenty to confidently say that =)

hello, guys... stop arguing... everyone is right! if someone loves a car or hate it it's his choice... that's why there are in the world hundreds of models of cars that are successful even if we love them or not. You can't please everyone!

I'm surprised that the new N55 Single Turbo engine isn't being used for this 740i. Did you make a typo WCF?

I wish Mercedes would do something similar; bring back the likes of the S 420/430 with the V8 in the GL 450 to make it more affordable for those who particularly don't want the hybrid variant.

come to canada then; merc sells exactly that model (s450) but in short-wheelbase form.

Me to! I would love to see the S450 SWB in America... Hopefully Merc will take a note from BMW

Mercedes first needs to uprate the 3.5L V6 to at least 330 hp. The current 268hp powerplant just will not do in a car the size of the S-Class. The previous S350 was an epic fail: underpowered and not all that efficient. I suspect that an updated V6 will be introduced in the next year or two. I remember that the previous E started out with the E320 and then received the 3.5 a couple years into the lifecycle.

I still don't understand how (or why) german cars are priced twice in Europe than in USA/Canada. Could someone explain this to me? 740i : 71000 $ = 48000 ? in US, and starts at 86000 ? in EU !!!!!!!!

The dealers may or may not like another variation to their already complicated product line but given the financial climate, some less expensive options may be a good move. I'm sure the 6 cylinder will be more than adequate.
January 12, 2010 6:57 pm
 M! M!
How complicated is the 7er line? there are less versions than the S class.

i believe he was referring to the entire BMW lineup, not just the different 7s. and yes, it is complicated, but so goes the era of niche marketing . . .

@ dbehmoaras: Panamera is a larger version of a 911? I get your point but you are reaching in some of your examples. There is a dangerous tendency to get so wrapped up in the enthusiasm of autos as to miss the point that these brands are all businesses. Cheaper is always better for volume, but a company has to balance volume with brand image and brand equity. After the hype of a platform dies down, they still need to profit from the R&D invested in it: hence, new base model.

actually.. A8 is a larger version of A1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7...
January 13, 2010 6:34 am
It's much more better than the older 7 Series, and they are selling real good in Germany.. at least I have seen a bit of them.

Now be daring and bring the diesel version of the 7 Series and S class to the states. Remember they are the biggest selling versions in Europe and have more than enough power and actually get good mileage. Ahh one could dream!

However you dice it, it's a great value especially considering the euro-dollar situation. They'll kill you on the options but if you wanted to get into a great drive, it's barely north of some Lexus metal. Plus, the cheapest S-class is 15k more. That might be the real reasoning behind their move.
