2011 Audi A8 Makes Public Debut in Detroit
2011 Audi A8 Sedan at 2010 NAIAS in Detroit

Audi showed us the all-new A8 at a private function in Miami last November. Now for the first time the luxury sedan has made its public show debut in Detroit.

The lightweight A8 is a primary competitor to the BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class while the Lexus LS and Jaguar XJ were identified as secondary rivals.

Technologies installed include the new-generation MMI system, brake energy regeneration, and the latest quattro AWD system.

Several engines can be selected by interested buyers, including a 184kW (250hp), 550Nm 3.0 TDI, and a 4.2 petrol V8 worth 274kW (373hp) and 445Nm.  However, the later will be the only engine on offer in the U.S. initially.

The V8 model, which has a 29.7mpg (UK) average, will soon debut at US dealerships with the standard 8-speed Tiptronic transmission.

This car just fails to excite me. When the previous generation was released it was a significant advancement on the model it replaced but this is just far too similar to the outgoing model.

and if it wasn't the length of the car I couldn't tell if it's not an A6 or an A4

The interior is exemplary, but the exterior is boring. I'll stick with our 2010 M package 7 series.

I'm still not sold on the headlight design, and certainly not the chrome wheels(too gaudy for the sophisticated sleeper vibe), but I like the huge front grille and the interior is gorgeous as expected from audi. But the most impressive part?...nearly 30 MPG in a full-sized V8 luxury sedan!

That's 30 miles per UK gallon which is 4.5 L as opposed to the US gallon which is 3.8 L. So that's about 25 mpg (US). Still not bad.

They should have given it the Volkswagen IROC concept's grille and kept these headlights! The front just looks too clinical, let's wait and see what the S8 will look like.

i'm an Audi fan through and through, but neither BMW nor Audi have done anywhere near enough to tempt me out of my S-Class and i doubt i'm alone in that estimation. the S-Class is still the last word in refinement, luxury, unstoppable power, technology advancement, safety and get the right wheels and paint and it can even be called understated. however, considering all that it still manages to tell the world that you've arrived. i wanted the A8 to be a great car. i really did. but this one doesn't excite me and i doubt many people will be trading in their S-Classes for it which is a shame.

spot on, every word of it. each new S-Class is groundbreaking in every way. this is the only model of any marque that pushes the boundaries everytime a new one is introduced. as clarkson put it, if you want to know where the average car will be in ten years, you only need to look at where the S-Class is today.

By comparison I'm a Bimmer fan, and I prefer the 7 Series based on both looks and the fact that I'd rather be driver than backseat passenger, but you can't help but respect and admire the S Class.

it's not an ugly car, it for sure is well equipped, it's up to date with all the electronic toys...don't get me wrong, this for sure is a great car...but the design is nothing more than BORING. I understand that a lot of people like mainstream design without having to argue why they bought a certain type of car with a more provocative design - but if audi would have sold this as a feclift, everybody would have believed it.

The previous A8s had more character, but sorry this one just looks like a bigger A4 - same sausage, different sizes. What I like about the A8 is the Aluminum spaceframe construction. As much as I dislike Mercedes Benz, but the S-Class gives you a sense of a baby Maybach that wouldn't look out of place in a hotel lobby parking lot next to the Quattroporte, the Arnage or the RR Ghost. This is just a big A4.

I couldn't agree more. I think it looks quite boring, I expected more for this A8.

I did not think that "brake energy regeneration" system will the see the light, but audi make it real

The A8 always fit between the S-Class and the 7 Series. S-Class being all about comfort, and the BMW focused on driving dynamics. The A8 is a blend of comfort and driving pleasure. For me too many wanna be 50 cents here in the Toronto area have 7 series with 22" chrome rims to make me want a 7 series. The S-Class still has an old man image. The A8 is out of the 3 the only real young man's car with class. And to tell you the truth cars in this category have never been about excitement so why are you guys surprised? It's all about interior design and comfort in this segment. Also ok so it looks like the rest of Audi's line up. What's wrong with that? About 4 years ago at the start of this economic crisis brands started to put larger badges on their cars, mostly American/Korean and Toyota used this method to boost brand image and recognition. Where as Audi used their design language, same with BMW it is very evident in their current 3 series and upcoming 5 series. Do none of you remember the 80s, where Audis all looked the same, bmws all the same and mercedes all the same. Same styling built up brand recognition, it is a marketing strategy, worked in the 80s and has worked very well for Porsche which is the most recognized brand in the world after Coca Cola. I rather have a similar line up than have a HUGE badge on the front and rear of my car.

Between S Class and 7 Series. LOL.... What are you smoking. I am an Audi fan but this design language continues to offend me. Audi is selling one car in 5 sizes XL = A8, L = A6, and M = A4/A5, for slightly skinny people there is S = A3, and for very skinny people the forthcoming A1 will become equivalent of XS of a garment line. &%#@ man, each car needs to have its own design language and characteristics. I bet more than 50% of the readers will not be able to differentiate between the back or front of an A4, A5, A6, or A8 sans the badge. AUDI: Please FIRE walter de silva.

The difference may seem subtle in pictures but I'm sure the A8 will stand out in person. Audi is building a brand identity and in all fairness, what about the R8, Q7, Q5 and the TT? And the A6 doesn't really look much like the A4/5/8 either. The only thing that really bothers me is the similarity between the A4/A5. I think the A5 is a beautiful car but the A4 looks like a cheap knockoff. The "Same sausage, different length" has been around forever. Look at the Mercs, BMWs and Audi of the past. Honestly it doesn't take much less than a true car enthusiast to tell the difference between each model. True I'd rather Audi differentiate between their sedans a little more but in the end I still think they're all fantastic cars.

It's really grown on me. That massive grille makes a statement and I'm pretty sure it'll turn out to be much better in person. And that interior is simply gorgeous.
