Ecclestone hints at F1 future for Saab

Should the group involving Bernie Ecclestone succeed in buying Saab, the embattled Swedish carmaker could have a future on the formula one grid.

Since the F1 chief executive's joint bid with new Renault team owner Genii Capital emerged last week, the Times has quoted him as saying Saab "ought to be a big name in motor sport".

However, the chances that any of the three separate bidding groups will succeed appears low, after current owner General Motors decided to press ahead with winding down Saab.

After the offers were filed late last week, GM announced that AlixPartners had been appointed to supervise the winding down process.

"I honestly don't know what happens next," former Swedish deputy prime minister Jan Nygren, who is involved with one of the Saab bidders, told Bloomberg.

Well that's the most predictable thing I've ever read. And why is GM just shutting down SAAB and not accepting offers?

Probably because the offers have terms that are not favourable for GM. Or the offers are not realistic in their pursuit of financing. Transactions like this are extremely complex.

I really hate those GM people, damn bastards, after they destroyed so many car mfrs, now they also want tons of money. Hello GM! you should have been gone already. And another thing, get your dirty hands of Opel already!

It's not about being greedy. It's about being sensible. Also they are likely looking after the interests of the employees and contractors interests in this process as they have the support of the workers and government. The workers will be given a big severance pay if it's wound up. If the company continues and they start slashing jobs or pay then the workers won't get the benefits of a shutdown.

I can't see why SAAB would go for F1. Rallying would make more sense.

If Bernie and Genii get their hands on SAAB I can see the current Renault F1 team ending up under the SAAB banner. It could also mean a tie up with Nissan/Renault in the future. Although TBH I don't know why they didn't pursue changing the team from Renault to Nissan. It would have been a smart move imo.
