Eco meets ugly, ugly wins

GM has unveiled the 2011 e-Spark at the New Delhi Auto Expo.

Set to become India's first four-door electric vehicle, the e-Spark has no relation to the Chevy Beat/Spark destined for North America, Europe, and Asia. In fact, it's so homely, it can't even evoke half-smiles from paid models.

Regardless of its styling, the e-Spark is the result of collaboration between GM and the Reva Electric Car Company (G-Wiz in the UK). As such, it will use a RECC electric powertrain with two modes - Regular and Boost. When the latter mode is selected, the electric motor will produce additional torque for improved acceleration.

Look for more information to be released when the e-Spark is launched later this year.

Electric Spark (e-Spark)

The "e-Spark" is GM India's bold move into the Battery Powered Electric Vehicles and will be India's first 4 door Passenger Electric Vehicle! The e-Spark is a local initiative of GM India in collaboration with Reva Electric Car Company. This is a path breaking initiative that has the ability to re-define how automotive companies in India plan for future mobility solutions keeping the carbon footprints and environmental issues in mind. The e-Spark will be one of the leading platforms of GM India in its Drive to Green initiative.

The e-Spark is a true Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). It is going to be based on the existing Chevrolet Spark architecture and will be powered by the RECC EV powertrain. The vehicle will be equipped with a host of smart consumer friendly features.

This car will boast of smart and comfortable seating for four. The 4 doors will allow for ease of entry and exit. The e-Spark will be an "automatic drive" car owing to its unique propulsion system and will be extremely easy to drive without the hassles of using a clutch in the dense city traffic conditions. The easy drive system will be coupled with an equally informative and intelligent Driver Display System that will provide all necessary and vital signals on the dashboard, easily visible to the driver.

The Electric Drive AC Motor provides 100% torque on tap as soon as the accelerator pedal is pressed down. This leads to fantastic acceleration performance. The e-Spark will have a Regular Drive Mode and a Boost Mode that will provide power to the vehicle through a high torque AC electric motor. The Boost Mode will provide additional torque to the driver for a short duration to manage driving style and during those critical moments on the go! The e-Spark will be launched end of this year.

Those tail lamps are more out of place than me in a Bath and Bodyworks. Seriously that whole rear end is wrong.

Yap the car is ugly... I dont understand one thing...Why does electric cars have to look ugly??? Sure they want to reduce the cost and stuff...but why do they always screw up the Body and Styling of the vehicle??? Just because its cheap and environmentally friendly, it doesn't have to be the ugliest car in the world. Come on Chevy, how do you suppose the world is going to get greener if you guys keep coming up with catastrophically ugly cars??? Wake up...have you ever heard of Tesla Roadster, Fisker Karma, Dodge Circuit, BMW 1-Electric, Chevy Volt...now those are some seriously hot piece of EVs and PHEVs.

The Chevy Spark EV is based on the outgoing old gen Spark/Matiz which was launched in 2005. Check this link: http://www.worldcarfans.com/10503019424/new-chevrolet-matiz @CarLife, this is smaller than an Aveo.

its got some weird colour scheme but its basically a facelifted Matiz which has been around since 1998... so I'm surprised everyones shocked by the design. Its been a staple of rental firms for ages

You are right, to add more, the design it self is 17 year old, originally the ItalDesign Luciola, a rejected Fiat 500 study: http://www.carstyling.ru/en/cars.1993_ItalDesign_Cinquecento%20Lucciola.html

Well, I guess we can be happy it's not another green or blue EV. I'm sick of the same color being used to connote 'green' tech! Show something more. And the back, yeah, it's weird; they added Volt elements to this car that don't relate at all, esp. since the back is not a big piece of glass painting it to look like one is really odd. @abughaleb good call on the old ItalDesign 500 study, amazing the shape lived on...
