Audi CMO Criticizes US Auto Makers [Video]

Audi of America has turned into a rebel of sorts lately when it comes to the U.S. market. With increased U.S. advertising budget by 20 percent, increased market share and a successful "clean diesel" marketing campaign versus competitors pursuing an emissions strategy based on hybrid vehicles, it seems Audi is hitting their stride.

Marketing gurus at AdAge.com are refering to Audi's approach as a "refreshing change." However, after viewing Audi's latest commercial, some may diasagree. The commercial portrays a man trying to commit suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning in his Audi A5 3.0 TDI but fails since not enough CO gas is emitted from Audi's "clean diesel" engine.

With this new aggressive attitude Audi officials are keen to point out the flaws of competitors. In this eight minute video, Audi of America Chief Marketing Officer, Scott Keogh, connects with a solid jab aimed at the U.S. automakers and their "hopelessly bland marketing" tactics.

He is so right, Audi by far has the best marketing in the industry. His description of other north american brands is so true, "here is our new car, it has this fancy new feature, come buy it. We'll give you a deal" All this deal talk and rebates makes it look cheap, like you are buying it from a shady car dealer. "The list price for this car is 55k, but today for you i will make you a deal 50k" meanwhile the car is worth 20k..With audi it's like, hey this is our car, we know it's great, you know its great so lets talk about something else. Like american dependency on saudi oil. No bullshit, you want to come see the fancy features our dealer can help you out, and no gimmicks, this is the price of the car take it or leave it.

+1, US automakers are almost doing everything wrong, the only on in good shape is Ford, IMO.

Audi is king of advertising! But I'd still buy a 335d over an Audi(volkswagen) diesel. That is if i can afford one...

This guy is desperate or what, I would keep my eyes on my own company, and diesels suck.

You must be so ignorant. American cars are still terrible. The mess they are/were in says everything. I'm sorry, but this guy is so right.

This is by no mistake an american ignorant ! No offence Renegade, but how can you talk without knowing ? I will also buy a 335 BMW over the Audi .. but guys, they are the kings of the low CO2 emissions with their diesels, the new 520d will be Euro6 compliant, due in 2014 .. in USA what's your progress ? Ohh .. i know, a V8 with 400 g/km co2 and a 5 kw electric engine, or Hybrid ...

Just brilliant - This is what you get when people in their positions are allowed to do their jobs, instead of executives who sit on their comfy chairs looking to make maximum profits at any cost.

I like Audi's but Audi sales in the USA are a small number compared to BMW or Mercedes...maybe that is why they are being so confrontational...to generate buzz and publicity.

Unfortunately it's still Lexus, followed closely by BMW adn Mercedes. Audi is only 4th, if not even 5th behind Cadillac. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-01-05/toyota-s-lexus-holds-off-bmw-keeps-luxury-lead-for-10th-year.html

Whats all this hype about Audi...and their stupid diesel cars... their are just another Automaker trying to swindle their way through clever marketing. Good cars dont need fancy advertising for example Beemers and Mercs, they sell themselves. If Audi doesn't stop this childish hair pulling, their gonna end up like the American Automakers too. Just come up with a very fuel efficient Hybrid will ya...

VW wants to become no. 1 world automaker. And Audi would like to be the no. 1 premium brand. To achieve these goals the company has to increase its sales in US. In 2009, after 11 months, Audi was still the third, after BMW and Mercedes, in terms of global sales. But compared to 2008 the gap from BMW was reduced from 184,000 to 93,000 units and the gap from Mercedes was reduced from 114,000 units to 44,000. So globally Audi performed very well (especially in China)and one of the keys of their succes were their clean diesel engines. But their final battle will take place in America. Are they going to win? Nobody knows for sure...

The Audi ads are indeed a refreshing change, as far as advertising goes. The cars on the other hand...not so much. I don't understand why the European brands try to push diesel cars on the rest of the world (specifically America). Simple facts: 1.) to produce a X amount of diesel you need way more crude oil then to produce the same X amount of gasoline. Since this is not by far offset by the slightly better mpg of diesel engines, this means that if everyone would start driving a diesel car tomorrow, we would need lots more crude oil barrels! 2.) although modern diesel engines emit slightly less CO2 then comparable gasoline engines, they emit far more fine particles! CO2 is bad because of global warming, but cows are worse then cars, since a cow fart (methane) is 23 times worse then CO2! CO2 is not directly harmful for humans, fine particles on the other hand immediately cause asthma, cancer and all other kinds of chronic diseases that kill people! 3.) In the US diesel is more expensive then gasoline, as is should be! In Europe diesel is far less taxed then gasoline, so less costs and taxes for the businesses and more for us, the people. So people in Europe started driving diesels as well....and see what happened to the big European cities, look at the buildings, they have become black! As a European living in the US I can tell you the air in the big European cities is worse then the air in the big American cities! Europe should change their taxation on fuels and tax diesel at least the same as gasoline...even better to tax it more, since diesel cars use up more crude oil then gasoline cars and diesel cars are far worse for air quality! So Americans, please do NOT buy a diesel car!

AlpinaRacerX - You have stated your case well, all I will say is this. The diesel engine is an amazing device, simply because it can run on much more that b.s. diesel fuel. It was designed to run on peanut oil, and then the oil and gas tycoons tricked people into thinking they needed a new fuel called 'diesel' which was just a byproduct of making gasoline. Liars! The answer, promote the diesel technology and in the US use Hemp Oil as the fuel, it grows fast, is not a food crop like corn, and it's also a powerful product in food-grade form being high in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I love diesels, I simply hate the liars that pretend you need their dirty fuel to run them. Hate the liars not the machines. Peace!

NOTE: Hyundai has done really great, with emotionally relevant ads, so saying Audi is the only maker having success is... well, pure marketing fluff.

AlpinaRacerX - Thanks for the info...you are right. I think its a known fact that any type of Internal Combustion Engine is bad for the Environment and us...Its time we go Hybrid or better still full electric cars that run on non-polluting renewable Energy sources. We already have the technology..its just a matter of time until we make it really effiecent and cheap to replace Fossil Fuel. If all the giant oil companies spend just a tiny fraction of their income into R&D for alternative fuel, I think we can have a cost effective method to harness renewable energy sources by the end of this decade.
