Buick Regal GS Show Car - 07.01.2009

Boasts 255 hp

With the North American International Auto Show just around the corner, Buick has released new information about the Regal GS show car.

Essentially a rebadged Opel Insignia OPC (except the powertrain), the GS features a revised front end, a reduced ride height, unique rocker panels, an integrated rear spoiler, dual exhaust pipes, and 20-inch wheels outfitted with high performance tires. Inside, Buick added a sport steering wheel, metal pedals, and Recaro front seats.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec engine, that produces 255 hp (190 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. Connected to a six-speed manual transmission and an adaptive all-wheel-drive system (with an electronic limited-slip rear differential), the GS can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Other goodies include an Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) and a Brembo braking system.

According to Buick's product marketing manager, Craig Bierley, "We designed the Regal GS to explore the appeal of a high-performance variant of the Regal." While it's not a confirmation that the GS will go into production, it sounds like GM is considering the possibility.

Opel's Insignia OPC is powered by a 2.8 liter V6 single, twin-scroll turbocharged ECOTEC engine with 325 hp while the same 2.0-liter turbo ecotec engine in the Opel makes 162 kW (220 PS; 217 hp).

Buick Unveils Regal GS Show Car

  • 21st-century successor to Buick's Gran Sport heritage
  • Bold, sporty design with unique exterior details and an aggressive stance
  • High-output Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged engine and six-speed manual transmission
  • Adaptive all-wheel-drive system and electronic limited-slip rear differential
  • 0-60 in less than 6.0 seconds
  • Buick's class-exclusive Interactive Drive Control System

DETROIT - With an estimated 255 turbocharged horsepower (190 kW), a six-speed manual transmission and an advanced, adaptive all-wheel-drive system, the Buick Regal GS show car is a high-tech, high-performance version of the brand's newest sport sedan. It was introduced at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

The mechanical elements were developed with the aim of delivering a driving experience that is sporting, confidence-inspiring and refined. It has a performance-oriented drivetrain, a lowered body and lower center of gravity. Exterior and interior cues include two additional vertical front air intakes; large, forged aluminum 20-inch wheels and performance tires; a racing-inspired sport steering wheel and metal pedals. Recaro high-performance front seats feature four-way lumbar support and cushion extensions.

"We designed the Regal GS to explore the appeal of a high-performance variant of the Regal," said Craig Bierley, product marketing director for Buick. "Like the Regal, the Regal GS is based on the award-winning Opel Insignia, and we believe it will reinvigorate Buick's storied Gran Sport legacy."

The Regal GS exterior is distinguished by vertical air inlets in the front fascia, as well as unique rocker panels, an integrated rear spoiler, dual exhaust outlets, Olympic White paint and satin metallic accents.

"The idea behind the Regal GS was taking the production model in a more aggressive direction to appeal to performance enthusiasts," said John Cafaro, Buick design director. "But along with its aggressive stance, there's sophisticated style in the design that complements the driving experience."

Inside, the Regal GS varies from the standard Regal by featuring a completely jet black interior, including the pillars and headliner, sport shifter for the six-speed manual transmission and a suede-covered, flat-bottom steering wheel reminiscent of those used in international racing series. The instrument panel glows ice blue when the driver engages the sport mode of the Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS).

Turbocharged AWD performance

Power for the Regal GS comes from a high-output 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged engine with direct-injection technology. It is based on the engine that will be offered on Regal CXL models later this summer, but the engine and turbocharger are tuned to deliver greater boost pressure in the GS. The output is estimated at 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm).

The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission that directs torque to an adaptive all-wheel-drive system calibrated for performance driving. An electronic, limited-slip rear differential helps ensure the engine's power is distributed effectively during cornering.

The high-performance drivetrain is expected to enable the Regal GS to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. That performance is complemented by a four-wheel-independent suspension, with a unique High Performance Strut (HiPerStrut) design in front. The HiPerStrut system helps reduce torque steer and maintain negative camber during cornering. This improves ultimate grip levels in dry and wet conditions, as well as improves the direct feel of the road, while isolating undesirable feedback. Behind the wheel the driver experiences reduced torque steer, improved grip and increased cornering power, along with crisper handling, steering precision and feedback.

The Regal GS features a high-performance Brembo brake system with 14 x 1.2-inch (355 x 32 mm) cross-drilled rotors; four-piston, high-strength aluminum calipers, and high-performance pads.

The Regal GS is also equipped with Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) chassis technology (also offered on Regal CXL models with the 2.0L turbo engine). It delivers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety, while also adapting the driving characteristics of the car to the driver's preferences. The driver selects among three operating modes - normal, sport and GS - that change the suspension settings, throttle response and steering sensitivity through the variable-effort steering system.

I can't say I'm surprised to see this car. This was always the plan for the Insignia. I wonder how the VXR walrus teeth will go down stateside.

looks like GM wants this car to be what was considered to be the first Ford Mondeo - a global car... and it's not a bad idea

YES! This is exactly what GM -and all of detroit for that matter- has to do, and should have started doing a LONG time ago. I find the statement "We designed the Regal GS"

YES! This is exactly what GM -and all of detroit for that matter- has to do, and should have started doing a LONG time ago. I find the statement "We designed the Regal GS..." to be arrogant and false, in that virtually this entire car was designed by Opel. But this is a glorious day for GM fans, but regardless if you are or not, this is definitely a BIG step for the American vehicle market, and all of its enthusiasts!

The Opel Insignia was designed by Opel which is owned by GM. So the statement is correct. I don't see the same sort of comments about sharing platforms in relation to Toyota, VW and others. Audis, Skoda, Seat, VW all share corporate platforms...just like Toyota and some Lexus models. The platform belongs to GM. Opel belongs to GM and has for what the last 90 years. Anything Opel makes belongs to the corporate parent which is GM. Come on guys...you bashed GM when they did it wrong with rebranding cars...now they are using good corporate platforms just like Toyota or VW. Do you really think that Opel developed this platform only for Opel when they are a subsidiary of a corporate parent? IF so you might want to start complaining as VW is getting ready to rebadge the Porsche Panamera under one of its other brands, VW rebadged a Lamborghini Gallardo to become an Audi R8. There is no difference except you people hate GM.

No kidding, GM owns Opel? ...lol I was referring to this statement: "According to Buick's product marketing manager, Craig Bierley". I find it controversial that a Buick representative is taking credit for a car almost entirely designed by Opel. Of course companies will re-badge, that's simple economics; economies of scale, and just good business. And buddy, please don't put words in my mouth. Read the rest of my original post, you will find that I praise this car and the beginning of a revolution in the industry that it represents. I love GM, and always will.

the new buick/Vauxhall/opel regal is really nice and the europe engine is a v6 325hp :)) and the us engine is a 4 cyl. THE WORLD UPSIDE DOWN!!!

Hello hhfol, According to the text the US turbo-charged 4-cylinder produces 255hp compared to the European 217hp. The V6 you refer to relates the European high performance OPC version, which the US market may still get. Otherwise the other V6 engine in Europe is the 260 hp V6 turbo which is not particularly quick. The 217hp turbo-4 is much better, of which the US markets gets the 255hp version of it! One thing to point out. Turbos work better at higher altitudes where the air is thin, better than a 6-cylinder of similar output. At those altitudes you may also find snow, which is where AWD is useful. Like at ski resorts, for example.

Really? I thought that the V-6 was totally out of the picture for the American market, as I've read elsewhere that Buick wants to keep the entire Regal line-up as I-4s. Would be awesome if they did though! Definite S4 competitor!

Nice looking car and Euro COTY. Deserves to do very well in the US. All wheel drive too! - think I may have found my next car.

..."Connected to a six-speed manual transmission and an adaptive all-wheel-drive system (with an electronic limited-slip rear differential)..." WHAT?!?! I can hardly believe it. If GM can find dealers" who will actually put this car in their showrooms, these models will sell. I believe some of the "old-man" sitgma for Buick stems from the sales force's resistance to younger-themed product and the marketing team's misguided efforts to aim product at the 25-40 market.

because its just as good a car and costs a fraction of what an Audi does. Audis being nothing more than a badge, i think i would take the Opel. Also, the top spec insignia interior with wood trim is nicer than any Audi.

Audis all look the same and are somehow terribly boring - with the possible exception of some of the wagons.

"We designed the Regal GS to explore the appeal of a high-performance variant of the Regal." - HAHAHA, you idiot, you didn't design anything! The car already exists! You switched the engine and the badge, that isn't design!
