Somali Pirates Hijack Ship Filled with Kias and Hyundais
MV Crystal Ray carries 2400 Kias to Humber Sea Terminal, UK, 17.08.2005

Car transport ship is carrying about 2,400 cars, most of the Kia and Hyundai models

Somali pirates have hijacked a vessel carrying Hyundai and Kia vehicles some 1,000 kilometers off the Somali coast, the South Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has reported.

The ship, Asian Glory, was transporting about 2,400 cars, most of them Hyundai and Kia models, and was headed to a port in Saudi Arabia when it was captured by pirates. The ship was being operated by EUKOR Car Carriers Inc. and is owned by Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd.

Hyundai released a statement to the press via e-mail saying that the cars had been paid for and that the risk now belongs to the distributor. The cars are also insured.

The Gulf of Aden is a tight shipping lane that leads into the Suez canal. About 30,000 ships pass through the region each year, amounting to about 1/10th of the world's traded goods. Merchant ships traveling in the area have been the target of Somali pirates for some time now. The region is currently patroled by about 20 warships from the EU, NATO and other countries.

According to reports, Somali pirates now hold about 12 ships. The Asian Glory has a crew of 25, including 8 Bulgarians and 5 Indians, according to the South Korean Ministry.

How in the world do you hijack a ship carring cars. the ship is huge. N20 how about you shut up, Hyundais are already a force to be recognized. Don't care much for Kias. So hopefully then the Third World jackass will hjack a GM transports so they can keep that trash off our streets, we all know GM can not build a reliable care.

As long as there were no Genesis Coupés, Cee'ds, or Souls on board, it's no real loss. Apart from any people who have put a deposit on a new car (regardless of what it is).

How do they get jacked so easy? It seems like you really have to be one stupid caption to let that happen. Do these ships carry any weapons for defense?

i agree with mickey f1..this is also a terrible loss to the distribtors in the Gulf that were expecting these cars to be delivered... this has really caused some problems.... not to mention the 2400 customers waiting for their cars

Haha. Wow! You are obviously not a car guy. GM makes the CTS-V, XLR, SRX, Corvette, Camaro, Holden Monaro, Opel OPC models, etc, all great cars for the enthusiast. The GMs in China are probably crap because they tend to be old-school Buick models for the 3rd world built in China, and we all know "Made in China" means quality deficient. BTW, with the exception of the Genesis Sedan and Coupe, Kia and Hyundai were among the cheapest cars sold in the US.

Good, the people who are buying kias and hyundais can go to hell anyway. And what kind of name is Asian Glory? It sounds like a porno film. :) German cars FTW.

Can't believe the number of idiotic comments I'm reading. Hyundai is doing better than most car companies these days. To compare it to any American car company? Ridiculous. Hyundai is not bankrupt, Hyundai didn't need Government support to stay alive, Hyundai knows how to make profitable cars, Hyundai isn't killing off models and brands, I could go on forever.
