Mazda RX-7 Revival Rumors Mark the End of RX-8

Mazda RX-7 Revival Rumors Mark the End of RX-8
Mazda Taiki Concept

Mazda could introduce the new two-seater Mazda RX-7 by the end of 2011, according to InsideLine.  The blog says the 2012 model year car is still progressing despite the poor economy.

The automaker may cancel the four-seater RX-8 upon the RX-7's release in contrast to earlier reports that a more powerful, more expensive RX-8 would come to market. Based on design characteristics of the Furai concept, the next-gen RX-8 would have carried over 300-horsepower.

However, by the end of the first quarter of 2009, RX-8 sales had plummeted 47.5% compared to a year earlier.  Sluggish RX-8 sales may prompt the decision to halt the model for the time being.  The new RX-7 will use the new-generation Renesis 16X rotary engine which debuted in the Taiki concept.  This dual rotary Wankel engine has a roughly 300cc bigger displacement than the previous Renesis unit, putting out as much as 350hp and 214 ft-lb of torque over the RX-8's 232 hp and 159 lb-ft of torque.

Do not expect the RX-7 to be tuned for this much power, despite its engine's capabilities.  A 250hp unit is more likely to appear on the $25,000 car, reports the blog.

Mazda can do some awesome things, but rarely those things are getting on the market. That's sad.

Rotaries don't make much tq, burn more gas, and pollute more by design. They are pretty thermally efficient though.

omg thank god. the RX-8 as a disgrace when it came as a SUCCESSOR to the RX-7. nothing replaced the RX-7 in my opinion. hopefully Mazda will properly revive the RX-7 in the coming years. please please PLEASE don't ruin it this time.

I know that a lot of people would kill me for this comment, but... I've never been too fond of the RX-8. Have always pretty much liked the RX-7 though. Bring it back!

Aww, it is sad to see the RX8 go, but seeing as the replacement is a 370z rivalling import tuner, I can't wait!

350bhp from a rotary, that's pretty good, especially when it looks like the Furai.

Didn't the Rx-7 come with two engine options, one with a single rotary wankel, and one with a great amount of HP that were a dual rotary wankel? Or am I wrong?

no, it's not single rotor or dual rotor. both are 2 rotor, the options is single turbo or twin turbo

I don't get what the big deal is, the RX-8 is slow and sucks as much fuel as a 4.6L Mustang...They need to make a 3L Rotary with twin turbo and 600hp in a 2800lb 2 seater with a 6spd sequential gear box.

The RX-8 was a disgrace in terms of truly replacing the RX-7 but i have to say with its problems in hand it was a good car. It did have very good handling. If it was ever going to be an RX-7 replacement, it needed more power, ideally torque, especially to cover its extra1-200lbs of weight. I never understood what Mazda was doing by not making the MazdaSpeed turbo kit a stock piece of equipment. I love the car but it has no guts.

Hands UP any RX-8 Owners who KNOW what they are Talking about when it comes to Rotaries?? The RX-8 is a far better car to live with than ANY previous Rotary powered Mazda..FULL STOP. Ask a few guys who went from owning an RX-8's to FD Turbo RX-7's imported from Japan, sure FD has about 38 more Horses, but DREAM on the FD RX-7 was NOT ALL That... You do not know what you are missing..I owned the latest RX-8 and it is Superb, and I have also owned from new Every RX-7, the SA22C, the FC Turbo and the FD Turbo. The RX-8 is way faster than the first RX-7 and faster than the FB Turbo, but not as fast as the FD Twin Turbo, but the RX-8 is by far a better handler, better braking and more comfortable, BETTER to LIVE WITH RX...Hands down.
