Michael Schumacher has now signed a contract to return to formula one next year with Mercedes, according to multiple authoritative sources.

Germany's Bild newspaper and the BBC in Britain say the seven time world champion, who turns 41 in early January, has signed a one-year deal.

Bild, valuing the contract at 7 million euros, said the German's decision is the "biggest comeback in sports history". Schumacher reportedly signed the deal at Brackley, with an announcement to be made on Tuesday.

His spokeswoman Sabine Kehm would not comment, but Schumacher's friend Sebastian Vettel said he was happy to hear the news.

"This is his own decision for his own reasons but it makes me happy that he is going to be there. I hope he is still fit enough for his age to ride along with us," the Red Bull driver is quoted as saying by RTL Nachtmagazin.

Bild said Mercedes is seeking special permission so that Schumacher can test the Brawn car in January.

Not sure about that, i'm not a fan, but he's probably we'll be seen a lot in the top 5 spots and i'm sure he's gonna have some race wins... But offcourse it also depends on the car and i'm not sure if Brawn now Mercedes GP can repeat what it did. But he can make a car better and the same can be said of Alonso at Ferrari. We'll have a great championship in 2010. Happy 2010!!!!

why ruin a legend ? let the man have his fun. he got the F1 thirst back when testing last year. now he wants to have fun a year and quench that thirst. i think it's a good thing for the sport, it will bring many viewers back.

Even if Schumacher ends up last in every single race in 2010, my respect for him will only increase. I see absolutely no shame in a person doing what they love well into what most would consider too high an age. It's not about what everyone else wants him to do, but what he wants to do.

Age !? ... I'm sure he will do well, even though I don't like him, (to put it in other words he is one of my least favorite F1 drivers). Age ? take look at Walter Rohrl: just few days ago Porsche announced he will be competing in the 2010 24h du Mans in a simple street version GT3RS (he will be 63 years old) and be sure he will kick some Butts. (of course this a good way to promote GT3's....

he is going to a team with the best stategist, the best engine (unless ferrari can fix theirs) and a team that despite very small development budget in 2009 managed to make it home for title. this year mercedes will be throwing HUGE money in to get (either) german driver to win them the championship. all german mercedes v all english mclaren - GERMANY v ENGLAND - wow, F1 created WW3 (and mosley's missing it)...

I don't know about that, mercedes still has shares at mclaren and they use mercedes engines so i not all english team its only english drivers.

Haha... what a stupid comment. Did you miss both 2005 and 2006??? I like them both. No need for the anti-Alonso stuff.

True, though I think he probably stands to learn a whole lot from Schu and Brawn. Perfect environment for a young, developing racedriver I think.

this is beautiful. with stutgart's $, the benz power, the brawn brain, and schumi's experience, this is going to be one hell of a comeback for the silver arrows. i can't wait!

The biggest cheat in F1 is returning - woohoo! He makes Piquet Jr look like little league. And with his old boss and good mate now president of the FIA he'll probably get away with running others off the road and parking his car in middle of corners...

I am sure his return had a lot less to do with money than with his itch to return to something he loves. That he does so with the perennial racing company from his own homeland must have played its own role into the matter. I am not sure how his relationship with Ferrari will continue after this year. Can he return there, or will he be somehow involved at MB? The latter would perhaps not be so smooth, as MB may be a much more complex bureaucracy than Ferrari ever was.

in 2005 or 2006 his wealth was estimated to 660 million Euros, that's around 990 million dollars. i'm sure he will donate the 7 million he makes from Mercedes. in the last 10 years he donated almost 100 million Euros to charity around the world. there isn't much in the media about that because he likes to keep his private life out of the spotlight. i wasn't a big fan of his , but he really is a nice guy.

I dont like his personality, he's more selfish and dirty then every champion out there. But I respect his talent and determination. Welcome back, looking forward to a crazy season.

Mein Gott! He's is back!! A one year contract is pragmatic. Schumacher and Mercedes-Benz (last seen in 1990 World Championship Le Mans cars) provides for an intriguing 2010 season. Brawn provides the "icing". isaacu
