that's sad news. i really admired Saabs. thank you GM for screwing up everything. i still can't believe that after a firm kicking from everyone you still can't seem to make sensible business decisions. it's absolutely shocking, and if i were the US taxpayer i'd be asking serious questions of my government about why they're propping up such an irresponsible company.

"you [Gm] still can't seem to make sensible business decisions." Eliminating something that causes your business to lose money is generally considered to be a smart business decision. Saab had been losing money for years, long before GM ever showed up. But yes, whatever the causes may be this is indeed sad news.

Americans!!! Fools!!! They have generated the crisis and mess in everything. Fiat took over the Chrysler, Toyota and VW should also buy GM and Ford and make them produce sensible, good quality cars instead of rubish Lincolns and Cadillacs. But VW and Toyota don't need to buy troublemaking companies, they're already leaders. In fact VW I think has the best range of cars in the world. From ultra exclusive Bugatti, Bentley and Lamborghini, soon Porsche, to sensible, and well made Skodas nad Seats.

agree with francois. VW is now the automotive supergiant. GM have no brains, Ford can't decide on 2 design schools, toyota are boring (hopefully the new boss will fix that) and VW are the only group that caters for everyone. can't afford an audi? buy a vw. can't afford a vw buy a skoda. want to dream? get a lambo. wonderful business model. just wish they had f1 reprisentation (not under skoda brand naturally)

Auto enthusiasts across the globe will be lining up for an opportunity to burn a cross in GM's front yard. But let us all remember that the Swedes themselves couldn't make Saab a profitable operation, hence the sale to GM--a company whose mission statement is most assuredly devoid of the words "eccentric" and "quirky." Furthermore, most would agree that VW has displayed skill as of late at making smart business decisions. If even VW didn't want to touch Saab with a 10-foot pole then what does that say about the cancerous nature of Saab's financial portfolio that it kills whatever it touches? I think that Saab would have died anyway. In the end GM served only to keep it on life support long enough to give friends and relatives ample time to show up at the hospital in order to bid a last farewell.

I agree. Low volume, upscale FWD cars are a tough niche in a global marketplace.

I can't believe that GM has fallen so low. If I was Swedish I would be very pissed off with the heads of motors liquidation company. It's a damn shame closing such a hisotric car company. Saab isn't some crap american company such as Viking motors, Saturn or Merkur.

Merkur = Ford. Merkur XR4ti = Ford Sierra XR4i. Merkur Scorpio = Ford Scorpio...I think.

I read all these comments blaming GM. Some I understand, some I don't. EDavis is right Saab has always been quirky but rarely made money, even when not owned by GM. I had friends that owned Saabs for years and pre GM they had a quirky electrical system that would leave you stranded frequently. I know that GM vastly improved the reliability of Saabs but sacrificed the character of the brand. Right now Saab is about to rediscover some historical character and put some quirkiness back into their design and thats a good thing. Saab is also on the cusp of 3 new vehicles that should provide more interest and sales to the brand so it should be attractive to a bidder. I think that many buyers are trying to get pieces of GM for next to nothing thinking GM needs the cash and GM is calling their bluffs...and it's the right business move. I agree with the new board of directors of GM to keep Opel. Opel is important to GM, Saab is not. I would rather GM wind down these brands than give them away at way below market prices so some automaker wannabe can pat themselves on the back for making such a shrewd and economical move thinking he out smarted 'ole' GM...that was the old GM...so far I like the new GM much better.

So its visible that GM is playing, not selling, it is as with their cars. Deepest possible bankruptcy - the bancruptcy of entire lifestyle and business ideology with it. Koenigsegg withdrew from agreement to be not fooled as Magna and may be Fiat too I'm afraid.

I bet talks failed because GM sold tooling for current generation SAABs to the Chinese company. How could a new SAAB owner compete with a Chinese SAAB? Chinese company will sell similar SAABs for half the price at a Walmart near you.

F*** GM and all of their money hungry incompentent managers!!! First they hold Opel back after pontential buyers made their offer, now they kill Saab.

I agree in that I think talks failed due to GMs selling of the SAAB tooling. It is a sad day for the industry undoubtedly and for me as I have always had a soft spot for SAAB despite never owning one. I never had a good feeling about the selling of SAAB and my worst fears have been realised.

I can't believe this! Sooo sad! As has been said many times before, SAAB has never been a money maker, but at least they were surviving. I can't believe GM is/has killed this company. Out of all of the recent nameplates that have closed (Olds, Plymouth, Pontiac, etc.), this is the only one that I am truly sad about. I really wish someone could have jumped in and saved them. The image had a lot of potential.

surely someone wants a ready-to-go newly developed car? the 9-5 must have cost a lot to develop yet they are throwing it away.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not SAAB!!! I love SAAB this sucks so bad - does this mean we wont get the new 9-5 or will it be rebadged?

autoficianado, the Scorpio was RWD, the Taurus was FWD. Not the same car. Obviously there were some pretty major issues that we don't know about if two deals fell through and the Chinese would touch them. I feel for the Swedes though, it'd be like us in Australia losing Ford or Holden.
