Rendered Speculation: Saab 9-5 is a Master of Disguise
Saab 9-5 hearse artist rendering

[UPDATE] Since the writing of this article GM has announced talks with Spyker have collapsed and Saab will be discontinued. Story here.

Just what, exactly, will the new Saab 9-5 SportCombi look like?  AutoWeek.nl asked readers to submit their Photoshopped ideas for the new Saab 9-5, with at least one cranking out a rendering of the as-yet unreleased SportCombi or station wagon variety.

The results were good enough to fool at least a few members of Sweden's mainstream media, who apparently published the SportCombi photo as though it leaked out from internal Saab sources. Nonetheless, Auto Motor Sport Sweden earlier this year was shown a 1:1 scale model of the wagon variant at Saab's own photo studio in Vänersborg and confirm the rendering is quite close by stating, "Only the roof rails are missing."

Amongst the other PS submissions, a Saab version of a U.S. President's security limousine, a Bugatti Veyron inspired 9-5 with solid red hubcaps, Citroen DS3, 9-5 Coupe and a hearse for the Swedes, complete with blacked-out Swedish flags.

This last drawing is hopefully not symbolic of Saab's future, which is struggling for survival as GM debates whether or not to sell the brand.  Meanwhile, the Saab 9-5 should go on sale in early 2010, with the SportCombi coming out later in the year.

Why produce any of the cars if you're letting the brand die? Send Saab to Bankruptcy court for dissolution of assets

Finally. SAABs were always bought by people that only wanted to be different from the rest, there was nothing special about saabs in terms of looks, realibility or general engineering. Well the only good thing they did was that small button that turned off alle the interior lights with only speedometer left in light, but that's not enough I suppose...

i still can?t believe it, this is not going to happen. they must be stupid in sweden if they let the best known flagship swedish company, together with IKEA, disappear. and yes, these cars had character of their own, with all pros and contras. i insist, i still don?t believe it, i join those who say this is just a GM?s strategy to force purchase, first from swedish government, then from anyone (asian?) who may want loads of technology for bargain money. shameful, but hopefully efective.

Saab died a long, long time ago. Now they're either glorified Vauxhall's or rehashed Chryslers, so there's nothing to lament.
