Audi A8 World First Integration of Google Earth Based Navigation Announced
Audi A8 MMI Online search for points of interest with Google Earth

Features internet connectivity

Audi has announced the 2011 A8 will become the first vehicle to feature a Google Earth-based navigation system.

Dubbed multimedia interface (MMI) navigation plus, the system has "an integrated hard disk for navigation, phone and audio data and a graphics processor capable of generating high-quality, three dimensional images."

If a customer orders the optional GPRS/EDGE modem, they can conduct a Google search for points-of-interest via the internet. The system also allows customers to program destinations into Google Maps and then retrieve them in the car.

In mid-2010, Audi will offer a UMTS modem which features faster data transfer speeds and the ability to stream voice and data connections simultaneously. This allows the navigation system to run Google Earth, which provides three-dimensional satellite and aerial imagery for the entire globe. On top of this, Google Earth offers a worldwide database of destination photographs, information, and 3D topography.

Best of all, owners only need to insert their SIM card in the MMI Navigation plus system (or pair their mobile phone with the MMI via Bluetooth) to access the internet. This means that "aside from the customer's existing mobile phone data plan, no additional contracts are required."

The new Audi A8 - with Google at the leading edge of Connectivity

  • A8 searches for and retrieves internet content via the mobile phone network
  • Online point-of-interest search powered by Google integrated with the Audi navigation system
  • Google Earth available for the first time in a production vehicle

In early 2010 Audi will be bringing the next generation of the A8 to the starting line. The new flagship and its online services further demonstrate the brand's proverbial Vorsprung durch Technik, by bringing a variety of Google services and information to the luxury sedan via the internet. The services will be available in selected markets.

The new A8 has set the bar at new heights with regard to multimedia technology. Its multimedia interface (MMI) navigation plus features among other innovations, a highly evolved operating concept incorporating a touchpad - known as MMI touch. Also included are an integrated hard disk for navigation, phone and audio data and a graphics processor capable of generating high-quality, three dimensional images. The MMI analyzes navigation data predictively, relaying information to the control units managing the automatic cruise control with Stop & Go, adaptive lights and the 8-speed tiptronic gearbox so that these systems can precisely adapt their function to conditions well in advance.

Equally state-of-the-art are the Audi online services which allow the new A8 to retrieve up-to-date information from the internet via the optionally integrated GPRS/EDGE modem in the MMI navigation plus. The user can search online with Google for points-of-interest directly from within the MMI, the versatile search engine accepting such free text search queries as "delicatessen" or "shoe boutique". The results are then displayed on the onboard map or used as destinations for route calculation.

Highly comfortable: Destination planning at home
The data connection enables a further comfortable feature. A8 customers can plan their navigation destinations in Google Maps or the Audi web portal at home or in the office and retrieve these on demand in the car.

In mid 2010 Audi will further enhance its suite of online services with a new UMTS modem. This enables faster data transfer as well as simultaneous voice and data connections, and allows Audi to set a world first with the integration of Google Earth in the MMI navigation plus. High resolution three-dimensional satellite and aerial imagery for the entire globe and a worldwide database of photos and information articles are only some of the fascinating new features. With Google Earth on the MMI's 8 inch LCD display the new Audi A8 allows its occupants to discover the world from above. The Google Earth imagery and 3D terrain model are combined with the detailed street network from the onboard navigation database as well as calculated routes in a seamless integration of online and offline content.

To use the new online services the customer simply needs to insert their SIM card in the MMI Navigation plus or pair their mobile phone with the MMI over the Bluetooth SIM-Access-Profile. Aside from the Customer's existing mobile phone data plan, no additional contracts are required.

First shown as a prototype with Google in January 2006 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas/USA, the new online services can be experienced in the new A8 as a result of a close collaboration between Audi and Google development teams worldwide.

AWESOME! The art and spirit of Vorsprung durch Technik [Advantage / Progress Through Technology]. With 3D Graphics and Google Earth / Maps you don't have to wonder if you're turning at the right point, as 2D low resolution Sat Nav displays sometimes miscalculate the distance to the right turn and have limited graphic resolution to clearly illustrate the route. Great Innovation ADVANTAGE AUDI!

Well it is. Of course it is not as sophisticated as a GTR's computer, but it's a brilliant idea. The best ideas don't always have to be the most complex.

@audi a8. finally. google is invading your car. sooner or later they will be broadcasting ads into your car's display. @dbeh... did you mention GT-R? nice. not only a 'real' multifunction display, it is *touch screen*. hello audi, (and BMW, MB, etc), can you guys be more in sync with popular technology? instead of forcing people to use your dials?

This is why it annoys me when people insult Audi. The idea is simple, but it's brilliant. I guarantee that all the other Germans are in a board meeting somewhere doing the oh so classic \facepalm.

I'd rather have GoogleMaps Navigation than a Google Earth in my car. It would be much more useful (voice search, streetview stuff...)

Well they're one in the same, really. The Google Maps app that you might have on your (insert color here)berry is Google Earth based, only truncated. It's all the same.

Satellite Navigation System Manufacturers must be scratching their heads right now, because Audi's started an evolution here! Oh and those A8 Headlights, that Gear lever. in fact the whole Car is something special! CAN'T WAIT FOR S8 RS5 and RS4!

Hello iPhone. I've had an Audi with current generation nav system nearly as long as I've had an iPhone. Will Audi absorb the mobile access usage? Why isn't there a simpler way to integrate navigation on X with nav on Y? Because incompatibility makes a lot of geo orgs a lot of money. And anyone who has bought a new car in the last two years would be with me in scratching their heads wondering why satnav costs 10x more to be integrated into the car than it does to buy windscreen mounted unit. The A8 is worthless without snoop navigation btw.

It costs so much more because companies like TomTom license their maps at huge premiums to manufacturers! Its only cheap for end users who buy their branded sat navs! This will all end with Google sat nav, as its so much cheaper and constantly up to date (free updates!).

First google earth based navigation? Well, you should have a look at a BMW first. Google Earth images/topography and Google based POI search since 2009.

You are right. There is a satellite navigation option with the last update available for all harddisk nav systems in BMW 3-series, 5-serie, 7-series...And one additional information: BMW is using GPRS since 2001 and will introduce a HSDPA-system in the next months. With a BMW you have also a full and unlimited internet access...I can?t understand the hype about the Audi announcement!

What a brilliant idea Audi, good job Google! But I just wish the screen is larger like the ones found in the BMW even the 3-Series.

Right. I can?t understand why Audi introduced a whole new luxury car in 2010 with a 8.0 inch screen size. BMW is using 8.8 inch since 2001 and today a 10.2 wide screen display. I hope to see an option for a larger screen size in the near future from Audi!

It`s a funny thing that existing navigation will be certainly avalible for 300 euros one year after release in Audi A8.
