Saab asset sale to BAIC for $197 million gives Saab 3 months of life - report

Chinese automaker BAIC will use technology to develop its own brand of cars

GM has been trying to sell off its Swedish brand Saab for over a year now without much luck. Now, it looks like they may have to sell what they can of it.

According to a Swedish business news daily, Dagens Industri, Saab has been able to sell the 9-5 model and it's technology to a Chinese automaker. Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. (BAIC) has paid $197 million (135 million euros) for the rights to the 9-5 model as well as some technology from the 9-3 range.

The money affords Saab about 3 months worth of operating capital.

BAIC hopes the technology will help it in its development of its own models.

GM has said it will simply close down Saab if a buyer is not found. The company is still in talks with Dutch luxury automaker Spyker which may still buy Saab. But selling off pieces of the well-known and established Swedish brand may, sadly, be all that GM can manage.

I know you guys (or at least some of you) at WCF know Finnish, so here goes: http://www.hs.fi/autot/artikkeli/General+Motors+Saabille+en%C3%A4%C3%A4+yksi+ostajaehdokas/1135251500627 To summarize it in English, it says that Ed Whitacre, the chairman of the board of directors of GM says that the only viable buyer for Saab is Spyker.

God I hate GM. I hope they rot in hell for this. You've turned a great brand into the orphan that no one really wants to adopt... except the weird and abusive ones, i.e the Chinese. And what they've done simply amounts to black market organ trading. I hate you GM.

I really agree with you ! Until the GM takeover, SAAB made some good cars .. and also with heritage (first turbo, anyone?). And now .. what do you know, they throw it overboard .. because it's too heavy, but you got it fat .. you business ruiners !!

BAIC is getting a good deal. They get the milk without buying the cow. On a side note, i'm starting to think of GM as the anti-enthusiast.

They can't close SAAB. Wallander would never be the same again!! Whenever I think of Chinese buying a European company, I think of Rover. That turned out well. Er...

Exactly! It was all Rover, sorry, over for Rover and MG when it landed in the Nanjing cauldron. The 75 is now badged 'Roewe'. Is nice!
