Santa?s 571 hp sleigh

Our spy photographers have caught the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster undergoing cold weather testing in Northern Europe.

Virtually identical to the coupe, the Roadster will loose its trademark gullwing doors and fixed roof. Despite this, Mercedes will add numerous chassis reinforcements to ensure the sporty handling remains intact.

Power will be provided by a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter (6,208cc) V8 engine that produces 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Nm of torque. While it will weigh slightly more than the coupe (due to the aforementioned chassis reinforcements), the Roadster should be able to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in approximately four seconds, before hitting a top speed somewhere in the neighborhood of 309 km/h (192 mph).

Look for the SLS AMG Roadster to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.

I wonder If they went out for some winter drifting. But with all that power I bet it drives like a pig in the snow.

? Dashing thru the snow, in an SLS Roadster, Snap we've lost control, screaming all the way, 911 we'll ring, we'll be spirits tonight, What fun it is to laugh and sing, While we crash a prototype! (sorry I was pretty bored to come up with that)

Wish they'd just kept with the coupe. Besides the fact that this doesn't even have gullwing doors, the addition of a folding softop should do nothing for this car's appearance or performance.

The funny thing is the car has American plates on the front left on the car by the euro plate and at the rear and u can tell its an American spec car by the yellow marker lights on the bumper. O well pointless but thought i would mention it, maybe their sending it to the states to test it here who knows :).

Gullwing Mercedes turned into a mere convertible... what a disgrace

Maybe not yet. The sales fugures of Gullwing and cabrio will tell the tale in the end. Cashing in is all the rage in business world; never forget. Have you heard (or read) of MINI BeachComber Concept just released by BMW? Tell me what you think of my comment on that.

I never said it would be a sales disgrace, I was only referring to the design of the whole concept. Have a look at the prices for the classic 300SL Gullwings vs the convertibles. The gullwing will always be the most desirable one, hence its much higher value for the true collectors.
