Max Mosley thinks personal meetings with the bosses of the carmakers BMW and Toyota could have kept them in formula one.

The former FIA president has written a series of retrospectives in the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph, and in the latest he admits that not sitting down with CEOs Norbert Reithofer (BMW) and Akio Toyoda was a "mistake".

"There was perhaps one major error on my part," he wrote, recalling the period of turmoil last year when he was pushing for budget caps to be introduced amid fierce opposition from team principals.

Mosley admits he "should have taken the trouble to visit each of the car company CEOs individually and explain exactly what we were doing and why".

"Had I done this I think BMW would still be with us and, just possibly, Toyota," said the 69-year-old Briton, who has been succeeded by Jean Todt.

"It would have been easy to demonstrate that with the cost cap, they could have had the same for far less. But this was never a message their team principals were going to give them," added Mosley.

we have a thought exactly for situations like this one in my country - there's no point for an umbrella after the rain.

I think that Mr Mosley has no understanding of how big automotive corporations operate. Large companies want to see instant success, and are not willing to watch years and years of failure and be tarnished with that monicker. The investment in formula 1 is so small when compared to the year on year profits of companies like BMW and Toyota. The economical crisis has been used as an excuse for a quick exit, because no doubt these companies will be back making billions of euros of profit in the next one to two years. I suspect that corporate operations and systems do not integrate with the swift moving formula 1 mentality hence these were all destined to fail. Mr Mosley might consider himself important but I do not think that he has any sway with corporate boards in automotive giants. Car makers should go back to manufacturing engines and leave the overall project management, development and racing of the cars to the experts such as Ferrari, McLaren, Williams etc. Note that Ferrari is not considered as a car manufacturer as it was in formula 1 from the start, and that Ferrari only ever manufactured road cars to fund the race team.

If this bastard resigned earlier, many car makers would have stayed.

There is no surprise here. Toyota said at the start of 2009 that if they don't win they won't fund the team anymore. BMW had a long term plan. Learn in season 1, fight for points in season 2, win 1 race get pole position in season 3 and fight for the championship in season 4. Well the plan didn?t work they gave up.I think BMW should have given one more try.
