wonder why AMG doesn't use a variant of their 4.0 litre DTM engine. Obviously it wouldn't produce as much horsepower but could probably compete with the M3's 4L engine, especially since AMG also seems to be focusing a lot more attention on lighter weights and handling

Agreed. I will miss this engine with all my heart. Even to hear one go by in the street is a beautiful thing. Is it just me or did it have an unnaturally short life? I mean, i think it debuted on the new-gen S-class and CL-class in 2006-07 and then filtered down to the C, E, CLS, CLK, SL, ML etc. So it's only 3 years old! That said, I knew it was going to be an emissions/economy nightmare the moment I heard about it (not that I cared) so I knew it would be given the axe soon enough. To quote John Travolta from face-off (sort of) 'I hate to see it go, but love to hear it leave...'

Well, it's good and bad news, this engine just the the engine of the year, but I guess fuel economy is way more impportant in these days. Carbon footprint is everything we have to deal with nowadays.

Saw this coming a mile back. Truly sad. Everyone should mark this as the beginning of the end of the glory years for power and performance. Now its all about efficiency and safety. However, I cant wait to drive the new turbo V8s with all that tq!

Indeed it is a shame. Where there were big V8s will now small V8s, where there were small V8s be 6s, 10s now 8s, and 12s will be gone altogether. Allow me to be the first to say this, because I haven't heard (read) anyone say this yet: I don't care how fuel efficient my Ferrari** is as long as it's still a Ferrari**. **: Ferrari or any other great make. Quite frankly, I don't care what anyone says, a high-end car make should never have green in mind, at all (unless of course it's British racing green), and no form of government should ever have the right to enforce it. I don't care how many of you disagree, or how wrong I may be (even though I'm not, and never will be)...I won't change my opinion.

Downsizing and forced induction; that's what every car manufacturer seems to be going for these days. Hopefully this is the right move for Mercedes. A 5.5L is no small engine.

It was a long time coming. I'm sorry but if you can make 300hp with 2 liters of displacement through turbocharging why not use that on a 5.5 liter v8? It sucks but this is the wave of the future and large displacement engines aren't part of it. It sad to say this but the same thing that happened to the large displacement carburated muscle cars is at work here.

I wish that instead of resorting to forced-induction they could improve on naturally-aspirated. Who knows, maybe some day they will be back. Maybe I'm just in denial, but are the elite manufacturers really going to stop making v10s and v12s? The rich don't really care about global warming as long as they tell the press that they have a Prius in their garage (with 50 miles on it, but they leave that part out), and so they will keep buying, and the makes will keep selling. Then again, the rich don't care if it's a TTV8 or a V12 as long as it has 600bhp.

Hell while were at it damn peak oil theory, damn smog, damn deforestation, erosion, the nigerian civil war and me not having enough money to pay for gas. If all these things dissapeared we could all keep our 7.3 liter AMG\Pagani engines and live like nobility.

it was inevitable...hail to the 6.3 AMG...I think AMG must be planning on using a smaller turbo charged V6 engine in addition as the 5.5. is not that small a motor...and how long do the V12s survive?

Well, there are still tuners out there who can tune this engine from 5.5L V8 to 6L V8. So MB, its of no use to go lower.

just download the mp3 here:

and then just use an online ringtone program to cut it up into a proper ringtone. just google ringtone maker or something like that to find a program, i haven't done it in a while but these sites are everywhere. good luck.

So we will see a hard competition between the next M5 with V8-TT, the "E55 AMG" with V8-TT, the Panamera eith V8-TT and the next (R)S6 with V8-TT. Sounds a little bit boring...

5.5L bi turbo's have been common in the MB range for some at least 5 years. When the old AMG 55 engine disappeared, people cried. Now when they are bringing back a forced induction 5.5L, people are crying.
There are two real questions here:
Will this be 113/155 based or 273 based?
And.....
How insane will this engine be?

the new BiTurbo V8 is not based on the M273 nore on the M113/M155 or the M156. It's a complete new engine generation and will be based on the M278.

as far as I know the only engine that hasn't got the NAG 7 speed gearbox is the M275 V12. The next AMG models will be equipped with the successor of this 7 speed gearbox
