2010 Mercedes E-Class Convertible Revealed in First Official Video, Photos

Whether intentional or not, Daimler has just released these two videos for the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible ahead of any other official announcements.

The E-Class Convertible exterior design is not much of a surprise as spy photos in recent weeks have practically shown the vehicle in its entirety, not to mention cameo appearances on the set of television shows over the summer. Despite the anticlimactic debut, these official videos still manage to give us a good look at the final E-Class range model.

The first video gives a general overview with some driving scenes.  Close observation reveals the hidden rollover protection behind the headrests. Via cute dog with flappy ears, the second video demonstrates the convertible's new AirCap system.  Innovated by Daimler, the system consists of a windshield mounted spoiler that ariculates to control the air flow through the cabin when the top is down.  When the AirCap is deployed it gives the E-Class Convertible draught-free open top convertible experience for all four seats.

The E-Class Convertible arrives in showrooms in spring 2010. Seven diesel and gasoline engines ranging from 125kW (170hp) to 285kW (387hp) will be available at launch:

  • E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 125 kW (170 hp)
  • E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 150 kW (204 hp)
  • E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 170 kW (231 hp)
  • E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 135 kW (184 hp)
  • E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 150 kW (204 hp)
  • E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet: 215 kW (292 hp)
  • E 500 Cabriolet: 285 kW (387 hp)

Stay tuned for further details and photos.

[UPDATE]  12 official hi-res photos and partial U.S. specific press release have been updated to article.  Mad props to the Jalops.

The all new E-Class Cabriolet is the latest addition to the successful Mercedes-Benz E-Class line-up. The open-top two-door model, which goes on sale in May 2010, features a classic fabric soft top, making for a stylistically pure cabriolet feeling. Viewed from the side, the new model is an intriguing proposition - with its clear proportions and a flawless cabriolet silhouette.

In keeping with the motto "four seasons, four personalities", all-year-round suitability was right at the top of the developers' list of priorities. With the new E?Class Cabriolet, the cabriolet season lasts the whole year because, while many cabriolets tend to disappear from the roads in the Fall, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet (length/width/height: 185.0/70.3/55.2in.) provides driving pleasure and comfort whether the roof is open or closed.

New features include:

  • The AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop: always on board and easily controllable at the push of a button, it reduces turbulence substantially for all four seat occupants
  • The modified AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system
  • The sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

The soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds - even when driving at speeds of up to 25mph. The cabriolet roof is stowed in a special compartment behind the rear panel. A retractable cover separates the soft top compartment from the trunk area; it must be closed in order to close the soft top. If the roof is to remain closed, the cover can be slid rearwards, in which case the trunk capacity is increased by 3.17 cu. ft. to 13.8 cu. ft. A through-loading feature is included as standard for the new Cabriolet, as is EASY-ENTRY - a manually operated entry and exit aid for the rear passengers.

The power plants for the new E-Class Cabriolet are equally innovative: the engines combine efficiency with effortlessly superior power delivery. The exemplary, low fuel consumption has been achieved because of a number of practical measures. These include on-demand activation of the steering and fuel pumps, the use of tires with low rolling resistance and an alternator control system which takes account of the current driving situation and the vehicle's electrical power requirements, plus the crucial factor of outstanding aerodynamics. The Cabriolet's cd figure of 0.28 is the best in its class, marking a continuation of the E-Class success story in the field of aerodynamics.

An overview of the engines (U.S. market):

  • E350 Cabriolet: 268 hp / 258 lb-ft.
  • E550 Cabriolet: 382 hp/ 391 lb-ft.

Less turbulence, easier to use: AIRCAP® is a world-first

In 1989, Mercedes-Benz introduced a world premiere in the shape of a draught-stop for the SL model series, followed in 2004 by the AIRSCARF® neck-level heating system to further enhance comfort in open-top models. Now comes another world-first: the AIRCAP® automatic draft-stop, which can be activated at the push of a button, greatly reduces turbulence in the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, creating a sea of warm air. It is also much easier to implement and use than conventional draft-stops: there is no tricky installation, the two individual rear seats remain free and the Cabriolet's flowing side lines remain uninterrupted. AIRCAP® is therefore a classic Mercedes innovation: functional, comfort-enhancing, elegant and safe.

AIRCAP® consists of two components: a wind deflector that can be extended by around 2.4 inches with a net in the windscreen frame and a draft-stop ?between the rear seats.

The functions of the two components:

  • Elevation of the free flow above the interior
  • Net at the front increases the basic pressure in the interior
  • Draft-stop at the rear reduces the backflow

As well as enhancing occupant comfort and wellbeing, the reduction in draft when AIRCAP® is activated (it can be activated at speeds of up to 100 mph and remains in use right up to the car's top speed) reduces the interior noise level - so passengers in all seats find it far easier to communicate.

When the standard AIRCAP® is combined with the optional AIRSCARF®, the system functions like an invisible scarf warming the occupants' head and neck areas. AIRSCARF® is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

Mercedes engineers have modified this unique innovation specifically for the E-Class Cabriolet: in this model, an adjustment wheel pivots the outlet nozzle upwards and downwards by a total of 36 degrees over and above the head restraint height adjustment, meaning that the driver and front passenger can enjoy the unique neck-level heating regardless of how short or tall they are.

Quiet, warm and windproof: sound-dampening soft top fitted as standard

Thanks to its sound-dampening soft top, fitted as standard, even the closed E-Class Cabriolet has one of the quietest interiors in the segment for four-seater premium cabriolets with a fabric roof. The soft top's exceptionally high-quality insulation brings about a clearly noticeable reduction in the interior noise level compared to conventional fabric soft tops. Exterior noise caused by other vehicles and wind noise are therefore absorbed more effectively.

On the road, the difference is audible from speeds of just 50 mph, for example when driving through a tunnel or overtaking a convoy of trucks. At higher speeds, the benefits of the acoustic soft top are even more tangible. For instance, it is possible to have a perfectly normal phone conversation in hands-free mode even when travelling at a speed more than 125 mph.

The soft top is of course waterproof and windproof. Plus it can be put through an automatic carwash without any hesitation. With a total thickness of .9 inches, the fabric soft top offers excellent thermal insulation, meaning that the E-Class Cabriolet is also ideal for use in winter.

Safety: robust structure, anticipatory protection and windowbags

The new Cabriolet offers the wealth of safety innovations one would expect from a Mercedes-Benz model. Highlights of the open-top two-door model include roll-over protection, the A-pillars reinforced by two additional tubes and the plug-in B-pillars. This new model is also the first Mercedes cabriolet to feature headbags.

The roll-over protection consists of two robust bars, each with a diameter of 1.4 inches, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests. A tilting cone sensor detects imminent danger to the occupants based on extreme skidding movements or acceleration caused by impact. If this sensor then sends a corresponding signal, pre-tensioned pressure springs are activated by pyrotechnic means, i.e. extremely quickly.
Consequently, both roll-over bars in the rear head restraints are extended. They reach their highest point and are locked automatically within a fraction of a second. In combination with the robust A-pillars, each of which is reinforced with two high-strength steel tubes, the steel bars provide highly effective roll-over protection.

The plug-in B-pillars are extremely robustly connected as they engage in the side skirts, thus offering highly effective protection in the event of a crash. A shoe made from ultra-high-strength steel braces the inside of the B-pillar against the rear seat crossmember.

With seven airbags fitted as standard, belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seats, not to mention crash-responsive head restraints for the driver and front passenger, the new E-Class Cabriolet offers the most extensive safety equipment package in this vehicle category. The airbags, which can deploy in milliseconds in the event of an accident, include front airbags and sidebags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag on the driver's side, and headbags. The latter, which appear in a Mercedes cabriolet for the first time, are housed in the door panelling in the beltline area. Covering a wide area - around 2.3 x 1.6 feet with a volume of 17 liters when deployed - the airbags provide extremely effective protection for occupants large and small in the event of a crash. The three-part side protection system - comprising headbag and thoraxbag - optimises the level of protection afforded to individual parts of the body. Rear sidebags are available as an option.

Further exemplary safety equipment available for the E-Class Cabriolet includes ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection, PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control.

I still don't understand why no E63 Conv. This why I don't like Mercedes. Some of the things that they do just don't make any sense. Another one is the 5-Speed int the SL-65 Black. You would think that for a 300-grand car they would at least develop a new transmission rather than use the old one. Then there's the C350. The C300 has 4Matic, so why not the C350? The list goes on, and on, and on...

1. The SL65 had too much torque for the 7-speed transmission, that 738 lb-ft would just rip it apart. 2. You can indeed get a C350 with 4-matic. Check their website, I've seen them around. 3. I agree with you that there should be an AMG version of the E-Coupe and Cabriolet, it's stupid. This looks beautiful though.

@ dbehmoaras , with proper suspension and gearbox the SL65 black would be faster than the SLR. Mercedes didn't want that while they were still trying to sell the SLR.

@McNamara68: the C350, as far as I know, does not have 4Matic, considering that the reason I leased the C300 over the C350 was because the C350 was not available with 4Matic, at least in the US. As for the SL65, I never said they should use the 7-Speed that they already have. I said that they should have spent a couple of extra months developing a better transmission that can handle the power, especially with that unjustifiably high price tag. Or just go with a 6-speed manual, the way it should always be with this kind of car. @Scratchy996: I never said anything about the suspension. In fact, their conventional set-up is not that bad at all. The Black deserves a better transmission, however. And there is no point in restraining a car like the Black so that it won't be as good as the SLR for a lot of reasons. They are only making 300 of them, so they will have no trouble selling them all out, because we all know how much celebrities, footballers, and oil-moguls love Benz. Also, by the time they started selling the SL Black, the only SLRs they continued to produce were either roadsters or 722s, and I'm pretty sure that the 722 has been gone for a while as well, so there is very little overlap. And people with that kind of money, if they can't decide which one to buy they'll buy both. I'm sorry if I think an alleged supercar should be restrained in any way. And if they were trying to make it not as good as the SLR, they would not have given it a more powerful version of a better engine (6.0 V12 with more bhp over the SLR's 5.4 V8).

There is no C350 4matic in US after a 2007.All C350 are RWD now,and YES, 7 speed trans. was tried by AMG in the Black Series and it was not suitable for a such a large engine with that much torque. However, in my opinion( and i sell them every day) Mercedes needs to offer AWD on the coupes, make GLK AMG,E coupe in AMG, offer stick shift cars to the public with diesel eng. and bring B class to US.

Since you sell MBs, you think you can get me a sweet deal on the SL65 Roadster (not the black, obviously)? ;-)

The new E may not look good, but nothing can be worse than the New 7, X1, and 5-GT.

New 7 is amazing don't fool yourself. And the x6 does look like an awesome affroader that is actually built for the track. X1 and 5 series gt is pointless but as long as they sell, no one will care.

No right now the 750 is beating the S550. And the 760 is beating the S63/S600 (which may have different engines but at the end of the day are too similar to be considered separately). As for the S65, it stands alone, for now, until the new S8 comes in and dominates. Hey Mercedes: think fast.

so... Santa, if u wuld b nice enough to leave a black one of these in my driveweigh with red seats, that would be AWESOME. I dnt understand aircap (its cool though), I thought the full point of having a convertible was to have the wind blow in your hair, other wise just get an E class coupe, it has a glass roof... also, im still waiting for a stand up Mercedes star on the hood like on the 300CE... i can hope....

This is in fact a C-Class convertible since it is based on the C-Class saloon. It is stupid of Mercedes to kill the CLK badge after creating some of the bespoke CLKs like the Black, DTM and the GTR. It is funny to see a coming magazine roadtest comparing this car with the 3-Series cabrio and the A5 Cabrio. With an E-Class? Something is not right here.

I was on the MB site and was building a 350 E when I saw an option for prepaying for your first service visit the cost $769.00. The idea they say was to lock in said price, with no surprises. what 65 thousand dollar car with a six banger and only 10kmiles on needs almost 800.00 dollars worth of work on it, this floors me. I have mercedes SL63 and my service is no where near that figure.

I will order the V8 much more fun. I am really impressed by the looks. I think Mercedes will launch a AMG in a year or so I think they want people to go out and buy the old V8 engine and when the popularity for the present V8 is exasted they will surprise us all with an AMG Model. That's what I call good marketing :-D You milk the crowd for maximum attention and sales ;-D

Beautiful car. With V8 (5.5 or 6.2), this will be a near perfect car. The AirCap system is interesting as well. I've gone off drop tops due to noisy top down motoring. Why on earth did it take this long to get a system like this in place?

I really don't see the point of a convertible E-class. It's almost like having a Phantom convertible. Love the sedan though.

but... they do have a phantom convertible. it's called the phantom drophead. how can you not see the point of a convertible e-class? it's a luxury convertible for those who wants a lot of room (enough for four) and the luxury one would expect out of an e-class. this is not the first time a e-class convertible has been made....

Exactly. The E cabrio was designed for men to have eye-candy (not from the car...) because we all know who will end up buying the most E-Cabrios.
