Mercedes to Preview Future Design Direction with New Concept
Will debut in Detroit
According to a recent report, Mercedes will preview their new styling direction with concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
In an interview with AutoCar, Mercedes' chief designer, Gordon Wagener, said "We want to elevate our design towards art and if any company can do it Mercedes can." He added that the concept will be a "long and exaggerated" showpiece which is not intended to foreshadow any production model.
Despite this, rumors seem to suggest the concept will hint at the next-generation CLS.
Look for more information to be released when the concept is officially unveiled early next month.

ugh, I hope it dsnt look like the F700 or anything rounded (like the W221 prefacelift and c216... both to round) I kinda liked the direction the W204 and W212 were going in... I would like Mercedes to go back in the direction of the W126 please.

i'd love to see a return to the w124, the w140 style mercedes with that squared off prominent look.
i just got a w126 SEC a couple months ago, that car makes you feel good like no modern car can and it is built like a tank. that's my favorite merc and something with those lines, a slightly recessed and squared off front end with a long sleek roofline would be right on the $.

what the eff? Those proportions are nothing short of bizarre. I mean it hasn't been done before really, but strange to say the least. Did they hire a Peugeot designer?

We want to elevate our design towards art and if any company can do it Mercedes can! That's the sign of confidence from Wagener. I hope that Mercedes can live up to its reputation with the brand new designs. Classic, yet with elegance plus contemperory adn futuristic!

that is seriously ugly... selling my shares in MB as we speak! please tell me this isnt actually their new direction?! i really have no words to accurately depict it... but not in an aston martin DBS or one77 way... oh god!

The F700 debuted a few years ago. I'd like to think that you don't actually have shares in a company without knowing what they do.

That F700 is beautiful and new. Most of merc-lovers waiting for something else, for something stable and eternal like Düsseldorf taxi from early nineties I'm afraid.

Again the interior! Now it looks like a luxury-hotel bar in Middle-East. For a God sake, what is happened in MB?

those clear plastic fender skirts are ridiculous. MB should have kept this one to themselves. just because its different doesn't mean its good...

dashboard panel rather too gross for my taste...as well as that GreatWallofChina between the rear passenger seats and of course the rest of the car entirely . Can't believe MB would go towards this direction....

This company really needs a new styling direction, so this is going to be interesting. Actually the entire German industry, with the exception of Audi, needs to punch the styling reset button. The original Bangles were not good with all of their fussy complexity. The "we want to copy this, while keeping our own worn out elements" derivatives were even less successful to my eyes.
Please give up on all of the clutter MB and the rest of Germany. Enough with fender vents, multiple creases and ridges, extra buttocks and droopy tails. Try good proportions, great lines with the addition of a little restrained use of original styling features and elements. Please fix the recent, odd grill shape that has become the MB signature. And if you are listening VW, you are on the other end of the continuum. Your way too plain grill treatment got tired about three decades ago.

MB could learn a thing or twelve from Audi's Model 2011 A8 . A veritable exercise in elegant simplicity .

I badly maligned the 2011 A8, but seeing this 'new direction' from Mercedes Benz, I will have to retract my comments.

You idiots! read the *ucking article! those photos are from a old *ucking concept!!

Thank you! Look at these guys commenting like mad on a CONCEPT vehicle that debute years ago.. I mean seriously! And by the way..did we all of a sudden forget what concept vehicles look like and what they stand for?
Rest assured that whatever "new direction" MB puts forth in this new concept; a production versionwould not be an exact duplicate. Just like any other manufacture that produces concepts, certain elements are lifted; lighting, a certain body line, an overall form. etc. Sometimes it's just connoting the aura of the concept to the production vehicle without such literal direction. This is an art, don't you forget it!

And by the way, I think that Audi can learn a thing or twelve from Mercedes. MB and the rest of Bavaria do not need to get all super simplistic! Audi fills that niche. Could you imagine if such a thing happened?! It would be fairly bland. This is Mercedes-Benz! I Don't know what it means to some of you but it means a heck of alot to many more. And these folks get it. I for one cannot wait to see what they do! Though I'm not keen on seeing a high concept CLS like someone mentioned above. Something completely new? Yes!

That's ugly. I am very loyal to Mercedes, but lately with the SLR and this new concept, if real, i might change my direction to riding bicycles....
